This is the front deck of the Sea View Inn we stayed at in Carmel-by-the-Sea. It was such a peaceful and pretty little community and this Inn was very charming. Here I was just goofing around with different styles and came up with this variation on selective colouring....

Is it too early to start decorating for Christmas?

Decided to plop a wreath on Baron and snap a picture. He's settling quite well into his lovely new stall--which, yes, is already decked out with Christmas lights and decorations!

Soon we will be able to enjoy lunch at work from the deck.

Thursday walking on my deck...got too late to walk elsewhere.

F35s at the stern of the flight deck as HMS Queen Elizabeth comes into her home port of Portsmouth. Carrying a mix of US and British F35s.

Apparently the US F35s are the US Marine Corps "Wake Island Avengers" and according to Wikipedia "On September 4, 2020 the squadron deployed to RAF Marham in the United Kingdom, with 10 F-35Bs.[10] The squadron is scheduled to train alongside 617 Squadron of the Royal Air Force, in preparation for an upcoming deployment where the two squadrons will form the fixed-wing component embarked on HMS Queen Elizabeth when the carrier enters its first operational deployment in 2021."

and I loved my garden into being every year. I started at this time of year, the "I can't take it any long, monochromatic time of year." Throwing on a heavy sweater, I'd go to the shed and pull out my empty pots. And up to the deck they'd go... where I could see them easily from inside the living room. That way, whenever i needed inspiration, I could look out at the deck and imagine the green coming. Which it did by late May, after I'd planted what I wanted to see distributed in mid-June throughout my garden as features of love.

So I miss my once-upon-a-time garden.

But today, this picture appeared after an absence of a few years. It came to remind me that my garden lives within me. And I can rest and see the green coming whenever I need a blessing.

my LOST GARDEN

Imagine a warm summerevening in a harbour on one of the famous waters of Frisia. There's almost no wind. Then imagine heavy rainclouds slowly sailing in. The boat-people gently move into their boats, some bigger, some smaller. Then it starts raining, pouring straight down for a while. Imagine having dinner inside and just when you have your after-dinner coffee, the rain has stopped and the sun shines again. A small golden ball somewere between the horizon and the clouds. With one hand you open a hatch to look at the upperdeck, straight into the sun. The other hand holds the coffee, a Beerenburger is just around the corner below deck. For a while you enjoy the view and suddenly notice you're not the only one in an open hatch.

And to always remember these boat moments, you make that simple click.

Please leave a comment below if you've been in this situation too! :-)

As I sit at my computer and excitingly schedule a return trip to Alaska, I decided to break out the old external hard drive and review the hundreds of shots taken there in 2019. Of the 900+ shots on the hard drive from that trip, only 40 or so have ever been shared either on FB or Flicker…basically that is all that have seen the light of day.

Some I share, most are just for me…like a fire extinguisher…when I start feeling down on the grey days of December (today is unfortunately a perfect example) I can quickly access them, flip through the blessing of my life and instantly suppress most of those feeling. As I view the photo, whether it be of family, friends, critters or in this case a single sailboat against one of the many glaciers within Glacier National Park, I try to remember my other senses…how did it smell, what did it sound like and what was the wind and temperature like. When I came across this shot, I remembered feeling something else, something that for me, once recognized provides guilt and a loss of self-worth.

As I stood shoulder to shoulder with a couple hundred strangers (my bride and friends excluded) on the ninth deck of the cruise ship I spotted this sailboat under motor power heading our way. I remember being instantly pulled from the warmth of experiencing a blessing into the realm of envy…how it must be so nice to experience this magical place on a sailboat and not this sold-out hotel on a hull.

As I watched the sailboat approach, luckily my “Don’t be a dumbass” internal alarm sounded and I was swept back into the understanding of my blessing, of being there, of sharing it with loved ones. I took this photo for its beauty, and as a personal reminder to keep envy at bay.

In the words of Bertrand Russell “Next to worry probably one of the most potent causes of unhappiness is envy.”

These deck prism arrays were placed in the iron decking at the top floor of the lighthouse, surrounding the large Fresnel lens. The prisms, flat on the surface but faceted below would refract light into the lighthouse tower and its spiral staircase below.

"In normal usage, The prism hangs below the ceiling and disperses the light sideways; the top is flat and installed flush with the deck, becoming part of the deck. A plain flat glass would just form a single bright spot below-- not very useful general illumination-- hence the prismatic shape.

The names "deck light" and "dead light" or "deadlight" are sometimes used, though the latter seems to be uncommon as a reference to prisms, as more often refers to plain-glass panels.

The earliest deck prisms with provenance are from the 1840s. Presumably they were used earlier, but how much earlier is unknown; the origin of the idea is lost, and glass is difficult to date." glassian.org/Prism/Deck/index.html

I was fascinated by the beauty, artisanship, and function of these, and had a difficult time finding information on the internet about their use in lighthouses.

By the way, this is not selective color. I'm not a fan of selective color, I did only a slight bit of dodging on the image. The details are much clearer when viewed larger on black.

Taking in the sea air on the top deck of the Stena Europe superferry. I travelled from Ireland to the UK last week to visit friends & family, my first time back in 10 years. Home now but I'm feeling a little jaded so you'll have to bear with me while I try to catch up on comments in the coming days.

The life jackets are stored in these benches & the lifeboats are hanging over the side. There is actually a walking route around the deck, 4 laps = 1km. Great idea to pass the time HBM!

Route 325 was another decked route to give more space for passengers. The majority of the 325s are now back to the allocation of ENLs, but a few deckers do still go on the route. Other routes also have gone back to the allocation of single deckers, which includes the 440, and most of the 112.

The “void deck” is a uniquely Singaporean term, referring to the ground floor of Housing Development Board (HDB) blocks that has been left open as sheltered space, where residents can gather to meet friends or where our children can run around, whether rain or shine.

Today, void decks continue to serve as popular hangout areas for senior citizens, as common spaces for Singaporeans and new citizens to “hang out”, and as venues for community activities organised by Residents’ Committees.

This is deck 16, the sport's court. I like to hang around on this deck a lot.
