The firefighters went into the trailer in turns, and the first group, once they were done, quickly stripped away all bits of clothing that weren't necessary for public decency.

In September 2007, my fiancee's Auntie May died at age 97. Auntie May lived for 60 years in what she called her "little house" in North Vancouver, BC, Canada.

My fiancee recalls childhood and young adulthood visits to that house, telling stories with her auntie until late at night with May insisting she sleep in her bedroom (May would go to sleep in the guest room at the back of her small home).

Although she had a tiny kitchen, family, friends, and neighbors filled it up while she cooked for them. The love, the integrity, the decency--and sharp, wicked sense of humor--showed by my fiancee's auntie touched many she knew.

Before she died, Auntie May said to my fiancee: "I feel really bad for young people today and and I'm glad I won't be around for much longer. Although I'm lucky to have been alive when I was, our generation wrecked the world for future generations."

This abiding sense of responsibility from a housewife who, after her husband died, worked at a local dress shop for more than a decade.

May she rest in peace and may the sanctuary she provided for others in her home live on inside them, giving them strength and an idea about how to build community in small yet powerful ways.

This package of Sunflower seeds was given to me at the LGBT Pride festival last year by the mother of Sean Kennedy. He was murdered in a hate crime against him because his sexual orientation. I spoke at length with this courageous woman, Elke Kennedy who spends most of her time now spreading her sons tragic story and educating people about hate crimes. She gives out the sunflower seed packets as a tangible symbol of hope for a future free of hate. It is my wish that she doesnt have to crusade for what I would consider "common decency" anymore.

This year's show brought students from both Lloydminster & Vermilion campuses together to show off their style, budgeting and presentation skills. Students had a $33.33 budget each to go out into the community and purchase an outfit and appropriate accessories for a Business Awards Banquet.

They were expected to practice their budgeting skills as they shopped for their outfits. Contestants had to show a good taste in fashion and decency. Finally, contestants were tested on their presentation and interpersonal skills as they walked up and down the runway and answered questions from our ‘celebrity’ judges.

The main idea here is to challenge the notion that students have to spend a lot of money to look good for work. Most students struggle with money and this show is a fun way of capturing budgeting, fashion and presentation skills.

Nice sunset tonight, skyline would have been amazing if that little line of dark cloud had have had the decency to be somewhere else!

The world famous Bondi Beach in Australia is a highlight for tourists around the world. It’s one of those beaches with both stunning scenery and a vibrant beach culture. The crescent sand beach is only 7 kilometres or 4 miles east of the Sydney Central Business District, which is why a lot of locals, as well as visitors all over the world, flock there in the summer.

It’s interesting to know more about Bondi Beach and have a good insight into why it is one of the most popular beaches in the world over. You may find some of the facts below both amusing and fascinating.

The History of the Name:

The name “Bondi” comes from the Aboriginal word that means “water breaking over rocks” or alternately “noise of water breaking over rocks.” But when you check with the Australian Museum, you’ll find out another reference for the word “Bondi”. For them, it corresponds to the place where a fight using “boondi” sticks took place. “Boondi” here simply means fighting sticks.

In 1809 the road builder William Roberts received a grant of land in the area. In 1851 Edward Smith Hall and Francis O'Brien purchased 200 acres (0.8 square kilometres) of the Bondi area that included most of the beach frontage, which was named "The Bondi Estate." Hall was O'Brien's father-in-law. Between 1855 and 1877 O'Brien purchased his father-in-law's share of the land, renamed the land the "O'Brien Estate," and made the beach and the surrounding land available to the public as a picnic ground and amusement resort. As the beach became increasingly popular, O'Brien threatened to stop public beach access. However, the Municipal Council believed that the Government needed to intervene to make the beach a public reserve. In mid-1882, Bondi Beach became a public beach. The first tramway to the beach was established in 1884. The Waverley Council was responsible for building the first surf bathing sheds on the beach in 1903. By 1929 an estimated 60,000 people were visiting the beach on a summer weekend day. The opening of the pavilion in the same year attracted a huge crowd of 200,000.

On 6 February 1938 five people drowned and over 250 people were rescued or resuscitated after a series of large waves struck the beach and pulled people wading on a sandbank into the sea, a day that became known as "Black Sunday".

Bondi Beach was a working class suburb throughout most of the twentieth century with migrant people from New Zealand comprising the majority of the local population. Following World War II, Bondi Beach and the Eastern Suburbs became home for Jewish migrants from Poland, Russia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Germany. A stream of Jewish immigration continued into the 21st century and the area has a number of synagogues and a kosher butcher. The multicultural migration funded and drove the growth of the suburb throughout the 1990s into the turn of the century, moving it steadily from its working-class roots towards an upper/middle-class enclave similar to its neighbours of Rose Bay and Bellevue Hill which was listed as the most expensive postcode in the country from 2003 to 2005.

Bondi Beach was long a centre for efforts to fight indecency in beach attire. The beach was a focal point of the 1907 Sydney bathing costume protests, organized to oppose proposed dress standards for beachgoers. The Local Government Act, Ordinance No. 52 (1935) governed the decency of swimming costumes and was in force between 1935 and 1961, and resulted in public controversy as the two-piece "bikini" became popular after World War II. Waverley Council's beach inspectors, including the Aub Laidlaw, were responsible for enforcing the law and were required to measure the dimensions of swimwear and order offenders against public decency off the beach. While vacationing in Australia during 1951, American movie actress Jean Parker made international headlines when she was escorted off the beach after Laidlaw determined her bikini was too skimpy. The rule became increasingly anachronistic during the 1950s and was replaced in 1961 with one requiring bathers be "clad in a proper and adequate bathing costume", allowing for more subjective judgement of decency. By the 1980s topless bathing had become common at Bondi Beach, especially at the southern end.

The Postcard

A postcard that was published by Miyako and Co., Maine Street,, Kanda, Tokyo. The card, which has a divided back, was produced in Japan.

The card was posted in Seoul, Korea on Friday the 18th. November 1910. It was sent to:

Mr. B. T. Lane,

21 Hambly Avenue,

Toronto,

Canada.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"17. 11. 10.

A merry Xmas old

sport.

You're doing fine.

H. O."

The Korean Hat

Robert Neff of the Korean Times has written the following about Korean male headware:

'One of the most important articles of clothing for Koreans in the late 19th. century was the hat. The elderly man with his majestic black horse hair hat, often seen in pictures, is the iconic image of Korean male society during the Joseon Dynasty (1392 - 1910).

According to Percival Lowell, an American who stayed in Seoul in the winter of 1883-84:

"No Korean can in decency appear

without it [hat], except only to make

room for some other hat."

It was a sign of manhood, "the most essential of attributes," and a badge of one's position in Korean society.

Lowell seemed amused with the difference between Korean and American culture. In the United States it was considered poor manners to wear a hat indoors, and one would rarely remove one's shoes, but the opposite was true in Korea:

"A man would part with any or all of

his clothing sooner than take off his

hat. On entering a house, he leaves

his shoes outside to await his return,

but he and his hat go in together.

As he sits down to eat, he divests

himself of his outer garments that he

may eat with greater freedom, but his

hat stays on; and so it sticks to him

through life ― a permanent black halo."

There were many types of hats. The iconic hat, the gat, was made from horse hair and bamboo and was black and somewhat transparent.

It had a fairly wide brim that in the past, according to popular legend, was much wider as a means of preventing unrest. Because of its wide brim, conspirators were kept apart, and were unable to whisper their plans to one another.

There was also a large mourning hat made from bamboo. It was designed to hide the face of mourners from others they might encounter on the streets. It was considered a grievous breach of etiquette to look into the face of the mourner.

Early French missionaries used the mourning hat to disguise themselves as they traveled the Korean peninsula before the 1880's. They were able to move about in relative secrecy for no one would attempt to communicate with a mourner.

Court officials' hats had slightly bent-forward ear-shaped horizontal wings. It was said they symbolized the wearer's attentiveness and willingness to "catch every word of command that the King may utter."

As Korea entered the 20th. century, there were many reforms forced on the population. Some were readily accepted and appreciated, but others, especially those that dealt with hair styles and hats, were vehemently opposed.

"A man is much more firmly bound to

his hat than he is attached to his wife.

He may put away the latter; without

the hat, life becomes a hollow mockery,

for the hat makes the man. Without it

he remains forever a boy."

Hats remained a part of male culture throughout the first half of the 20th. century, but have since disappeared. The only exceptions are those worn by elderly males in the Jongno area, or the bright colorful caps that young teens and adults wear while out with their friends. The "permanent black halo" is no more.'

Black Friday

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, on the 18th. November 1910, in the largest protest to date for women seeking the right to vote in the United Kingdom, thousands of suffragettes, led by Emmeline Pankhurst, marched to the Palace of Westminster in order to confront Parliament over killing a reform proposal.

The ensuing confrontation between London police and the women, subsequently known as Black Friday, turned violent, and increased sympathy for the cause of women's suffrage.

A Riot in Mexico

Also on that day, rioting in Puebla, Mexico killed more than 100 people.

Political leader Aquiles Serdán, who died in a confrontation with government police, is now celebrated as a hero of the 1910 revolution.

Although the trespass sign is probably more than 20 years old, it was the Ingham & Sons tile, discreetly hidden behind the lamp post, that interested me. Under all of those layers of white paint are, no doubt some lovely glazed bricks. At least the painters had the decency not to obliterate the manufacturers name.

Human decency is not derived from religion

it precedes it. Christopher Hitchens

"Walking In My Shoes"

'I would tell you about the things,

They put me through.

The pain I've been subjected to.

But the Lord himself would blush.

The countless feasts laid at my feet,

Forbidden fruits for me to eat.

But I think your pulse would start to rush.

Now I'm not looking for absolution,

Or forgiveness for the things I do.

But before we come to any conclusions,

Try walking in my shoes.

Try walking in my shoes.

You'll stumble in my footsteps.

Keep the same appointments I've kept.

If you try walking in my shoes.

If you try walking in my shoes.

Morality would frown upon,

And decency look down upon,

The scapegoat fate's made of me.

But I'll tell you now, my judge and jurors.

Intentions couldn't have been purer.

My case is easy to see.

I'm not looking for a clearer conscience.

Peace of mind after what I've been through.

But before we talk of any repentance,

Try walking in my shoes.

Try walking in my shoes.

You'll stumble in my footsteps.

Keep the same appointments I've kept.

If you try walking in my shoes.

Try walking in my shoes.

Try walking in my shoes.

Now I'm not looking for the absolution,

Or forgiveness for the things I do.

But before you come to any conclusions.

Try walking in my shoes.

Try walking in my shoes.

You'll stumble in my footsteps.

Keep the same appointments I've kept.

If you try walking in my shoes.'

Original song performed by Depeche Mode.

I seem to run before I walk; do things with ignorance despite lack of premeditated intentions.

I've had my share of frustration, anger, and pain. I've done things that were foolish, yet were out of ignorance. I've put myself through hell and back.

My family has been my steadying arm, and my running shoes keep stress of life from pushing me off the edge.

Now that I got my lab-work back, I can release a sigh of relief. For now, the reasons for hitting a low point in my life don't matter any more. It is about as close to a clean slate as I can get.

For now, I'll keep running. If your looking for control over me and my life I'll pass you by quick. If you want to join parts of it, well, maybe I am asking for people keep up and run with me for a little bit.

As it's been ten years since Garren died, maybe appropriate for one more picture. Many of us won't be remembered for five minutes when we're gone so taking a moment remembering a good person with another picture should be ok. Amid the tragedies of being born and living, decency, honesty, and friendship do transcend life and death and time and give hope for the future.

Bold little buggers, too; didn't even have the decency to blush. ;)

When did appealing to common decency ever get anything accomplished?

"to protect their modesty" #Repost @women_ofhistory ・・・ A constitutional oversight that allowed women in Quebec to vote was eliminated in 1849 to 'protect women's modesty.' Of course. The constitution gave voting rights to certain people without destinction of sex so early 19th century women took advantage. And it wasn't just white women either - 27 Mohawk women from Caughnawaga cast ballots in 1825. Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish women with property in Quebec voted too. But in 1834, Quebec politician Louis-Joseph Papineau wrote: "It is revolting to see women dragged by their husbands, and daughters by their fathers, often against their will, to [vote]. Public interest, decency and the modesty of women demand that these scandals never occur." This insight into the era voices their mindset. Women would be officially unable to vote in 1849 and would not regain the vote until the next century. Photo is of a Miss Guilmartin, Montreal, QC, 1877. #womenshistorymonth
