On the way down on the Guadalupe Peak trail this dead tree stood out against the surrounding Chihuahuan desert at dusk.
Explored 16th Oct 2020.
This tree didn't survive, but it's still graceful. The tree is on a ledge in Capitol Reef National Park.
This old dead tree looks out over Glen Feardar in the Cairngorms awaiting its final chapter. Whether it be a highland gale or a lightning strike it's past caring now.
Over the years I have watched the trees slowly decay. Not long and they will be gone forever

An ancient tree, shaped by time and elements, stands like a sculpture among the rolling hills and patchwork fields of Mayfield's Valley. A quiet testament to resilience and beauty of the countryside.
Thanks for the views, faves, and kind comments. They're always appreciated. Have a lovely weekend 😊✨️🙏

There is only one place in Victoria that I know of where you where can walk right into the canola fields and immerse yourself in the glorious and bright golden yellow flowers, and that is at the 'Cornella Canola Walk'. In conjunction with the Shiraz Republic Winery and Cornella Brewery just outside of Heathcote in country Victoria, a canola walk has established complete with a viewing platform and walking track through the flowering yellow crop. And this is where I went on the last day of winter.
Amongst the vast fields of canola, there stood one single tree with wonderfully twisted branches. Known as the Piano Tree, this tree reminded me of the windswept trees inhabited by witches and faeries drawn by one of my favourite illustrators from the Golden Age of Children's Illustration, Arthur Rackham as it basked alone in a pool of late afternoon sun. Here it's gnarled hands reach out over the vast yellow of the canola fields, ready to pluck a bloom or two!
Now in its third year, the 'Cornella Canola Walk' is a wonderfully immersive experience that is full of colour! It was a wonderful way to spend the last day of winter this year, surrounded by a seemingly endless field of golden yellow flowers beneath the blue sky!
Even when no longer alive trees still have a charm of their own.

I obtained this surreal view of Utah Lake in the distance below by climbing a mountain in my truck. Quads and side-by-sides were surprised that a truck made it there. Although not very deep, the water is an unusual color and has a bacteria growth that deters swimming.
Zoom in to see the snow-covered mountain peak in the distance.

A fire set by a 15 year old boy playing with smoke bombs was ignited on 9/2/17. It burned over 48,800 acres of forest. Blackened dead trees can be seen above Oneonta Falls.
Graffiti artists converge on the abandoned waterpark near New Berry Springs. It's been closed since 2014. Some well-known artists have plied their trade here, but the majority of scrawls were done by people with minimal talent in my opinion!
A twisted juniper reaches for a cloud on the edge of the canyon. We went on a hike around the top of the canyon at Dead Horse State Park. In the left center of the image is the White Rim road as it twists down to the canyon from it's entrance in Canyonlands.

Winter in California is the wet season. This day was no exception. We awoke early, after a cold, rainy night, hoping to catch a sunrise before the forecast rains for the day.
From Black Butte, we drove northeast along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway until we reached a logging and fire trail up Herd Peak. When we reached the end of the navigable road we stopped, just prior to first light. As sunrise occurred, it was a mixture of intense sunlight, breaking through the holes in the clouds, with gusty winds separating the clouds above from the fog burning off around the base of Mt. Shasta, which created a haze permeating the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. An hour later, the mountain was completely shrouded in thick clouds, no longer visible and heavy rain fell throughout the day.
For a few brief moments, the sun light the clouds above Shasta on fire, creating colors befitting a volcano of this mountain's stature. Sometimes you just have to be thankful for the moments you get and move on to the next opportunity.

New Year's Eve at 10:30 in the morning, the sun is very low on the horizon at this time of year, bur well-positioned to be able to get a starburst effect with the tree. I've photographed this old tree in the cemetery at Ashaig, Isle of Skye, on a number of occasions - there are now considerably fewer branches left on it after the big blows of Storm Floris and Storm Amy last year.
The trail zig zags down the steep slope to the bridge over Oneonta Creek in the middle of this image. The forest is showing signs of recovery after the Eagle Creek Fire started by a 15 year old playing with smoke bombs on 9/2/2017. The fire burned almost 49 thousand acres of forest in the Columbia River Gorge area. The fire burned extremely hot due to drought and years of fire suppression and thus even trees which often can survive fire burned to death. $36.6 million in restitution was ordered along with almost 2,000 hours of community service. The boy has been complying with the terms of his sentence but will doubtless never pay off the restitution. Meanwhile the forest is starting to regenerate. The yellow leaves are from sprouts from the roots of dead maple and oak trees. Here and there are a few evergreen survivors. Some day this will be a forest again.
What it s really , one deceased tree and one that has gone to meet it's maker - seen in Bushy Park . There are a number of trees fallen and left standing like these two in the Park , I suppose this is a deliberate action as the old trees would be used by nature for insects and birds nesting and shelter and whatever other use they can be used for . This shot was taken very close to where my previous capture of the resting deer and recently posted .
Dead trees in the vast dry valley of the Tsauchab River. This region is about 35 km from the entrance to Sossusvlei. Due to the dry climate these trees survive a long time. It is a landscape of surreal beauty.
Three swans swim like silent spirits beneath the white branches of a flooded forest.
"Spirit in the heart make the blood flow fast
Spirit in the heart make the beauty last
Keep the hope alive when the youth go past...
Spirit in the wood let the hollow cane
Echo in the afterglow
Waiting for the flame to burn again..."
