Had to document the box my computer case came in: "±The Phantom± 820 is engineered to chill even the most demanding systems, equipped with triple 200mm and a 140mm fans. Maximize the cooling potential by mounting up to nine fans to achieve unrivalled airflow in your chassis. ±Push± the envelope and utilize liquid cooling systems that feature a push-pull configuration with a top280/360mm and a bottom 240/280mm radiators up to 60mm thickness for unmatched performance. In addition, a rugged base design lifts the enclosure above ground for display and increased airflow. ±The Phantom± is reinvented again by following its legacy of remarkable asymmetrical and award winning design."
"Next generation Phantom carries the same bold, iconic, and futuristc design that is simply out of this world."
"Integrated HUE lighting for illuminating the exterior/interior of your enclosure with option to turn on/off and allow you to customize the colors at your heart's content."
"Dual USB 3.0, quad USB 2.0, microphone, and audio jack along with a SD media card reader for high-speed data transfer and quick access to multimedia"
"Easily removable filters located in the top, front, side, and bottom to prevent dust from entering your rig and simple maintenance"
My case: By far the best I've ever owned, though it has a fatal flaw with harddrive noise in certain harddrive cages, and I wish the windows were bigger, and I wish the color-cycling could be automated. But still: This NZXT Phantom 820 Series case was $199.99 from NewEgg. I made this project as a birthday present for my girlfriend: she uses Adobe Lightroom a lot, and of course the usual stuff, browsing the internet, watching movies etc. so It didn't need a powerful video card.
She has a tiny desk in a tiny room so in addition to not having the space to put the case, she has to have the computer really close to her: this is usually difficult to manage because tiny cases usually don't have the airflow to be silent, and the usual result is too much of a compromise between noise, performances, and space.
So I came up with this: a 240mm radiator inside a Fractal Node202, without a dedicated video card.
I had to saw a piece of metal to pass through the water hoses, then modify the AC plug to fit the radiator, and then flip the top cover and make an opening for the vent in the new position:
as you can see, the vent was originally made to fit a 140mm fan, which remains unused for the moment.
The intel 7350K is running @4500Mhz with very low temperatures under load and an almost silent noise output from all the fans. There is of course space for improvements but overall I am very satisfied, and most importantly my girlfriend loves it. :)

Last year I promised my twelve year old that we would build a gaming PC together. In August 2017 I bought a Gigabyte GA-B250M-Gaming 3 "Micro ATX" motherboard (on Amazon) together with a load of other components. Two weeks - and before we had started the build - my mother passed away abroad, and I spent much of the next few months dealing with that, and a new job. We eventually got around to the build in November, and the Gigabyte performed wonderfully, just as it said on the box. In early December I acquired a MSI gaming motherboard - a full sized ATX that better filled the Corsair case that my son was using - and so we rebuilt the PC on the MSI.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Gigabyte GA-B250M-Gaming 3 - it's just superfluous to our needs, and we don't have the space to stash it away. It's only been used for a month and is essentially new in every respect. The photos speak for themselves.

The power supply has now been wired up. It's the cleanest-looking power supply wiring I've ever seen, due to a combination of:
1) the case's holes that let you run wires behind everything, out of site. Never had a case like that.
2) The power supply's modularity, allowing 75% of the wires to not even be in my case or hooked up at all. Never had a power supply like that.
My modular power supply is the most badass one I've ever owned, with the highest wattage: An Enermax ERV1000EWT-G 1000W v2.3 $140.98 (after $45 rebate) from NewEgg. Other specs: Type: ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V v2.92, v2.8 / 24Pin +12V Rails: 4 / PCI-Express Connector: 6x6+2-Pin / SATA Power Connectors: 10 / SLI Certified / Haswell Support Certified / CrossFire Ready / 87-93% efficiency @ 20-100% load / 80 PLUS GOLD Certified / Over Voltage Protection / Input Current: 11 - 5A / Output: +3.3V@24A, +5V@24A, +12V1@30A, +12V2@30A, +12V3@30A, +12V4@30A, -12V@0.5A, +5VSB@3A / MTBF: over 100,000 Hours / Dimensions: 5.91" x 3.39" x 6.89" / Weight: 6.39 lbs. / Dynamic Hybrid Transformer Topology: Technological breakthrough topology using a staged dynamic transformer array for extremely high efficiency with the most durable and stable output at any load. / C6 & Hybrid ready!: Maximum compatibility with C6 & hybrid states of current and future CPU & GPU generations by ZERO LOAD design (no minimum load). / Twister fan inside: 13.9cm Twister-bearing fan with low noise and long lifetime. / 100% ±Japanese± electrolytic capacitors: Highest components standards for maximum durability and stability. / Future ready: 12P modular design for possibly upcoming new CPU and GPU 10P and/or 12P connectors. / DXXI ready: 100% 6+2P (8P) PCI-E connector to support new generation DXXI graphic cards. / 24/7 @ 50degrees C ready: Non-Stop industrial class performance at 50degrees C ambient. / SpeedGuard: Advanced fuzzy logic fan speed control for optimal cooling and minimum noise. / HeatGuard: Keeping PSU fan running for 30-60 seconds after shutdown to dissipate the remaining system heat and prolonging system lifetime. / CordGuard: Fixing the AC cord tightly to avoid accidental shutdowns of your PC. / Warranty period: 5 years

BACKSTORY: Building my new computer! We decided to name it Thailog. Thailog ("Goliath" spelled backwards) is the evil twin of Goliath from the cartoon Gargoyles±. ±Carolyn's± computer is named after Goliath, so it just makes sense that ±Clint's± computer is the evil twin of ±Carolyn's± computer. A quick summary of the computer's specs is: Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3GHz with an Arctic Freezer I30 cooler on a ASRock X99 WS EATX motherboard with 24G of Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4 2400mHz RAM, a Radeon R9 270 video card, and a Crucial M500 240GB M.2 SSD...all inside a massive NZXT Phantom 820 case. It was a $1560 build, summarized on my blog at clintjcl.wordpress.com/2015/03/06/journal-hardware-purcha...
Had to document the box my computer case came in: "Fully equipped with one 140mm and three 200mm fans for the high airflow and low noise"
"Unrivalled Cooling Capacity to mount up to nine fans for a symphony of airflow"
High-end water cooling solutions up to three fans for a push-pull configuration: 90mm of internal top space with top 280/360mm and bottom 240/280mm radiator support for unmatched liquid cooling"
"Rear I/O white light for visibility in dark environments with a toggle switch"
My case: By far the best I've ever owned, though it has a fatal flaw with harddrive noise in certain harddrive cages, and I wish the windows were bigger, and I wish the color-cycling could be automated. Piñasphere joined the fray for the Case Mod WorldSeries 2022
I wanted to experiment how far I could get with the design of a Computer case, from the standard that people picture in their mind when you talk about a PC, a boxy shape.
Even though it is watercooled, it is also less than 5 litres, and weighs about 2 Kgs.
I didn't paint it because I wanted to reach a point in which it looked good that way.
The black Petg of the case is Recycled Pet
Right now It is my main PC, it works for everything and the specs allow for it, from 3D editing on Blender and Fusion 360 to playing at 1080p.

In early December I was given a MSI ATX gaming motherboard that better filled the box that better filled the Corsair case that my son was using and so we rebuilt the PC pn the MSI.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Gigabyte GA-B250M-Gaming 3 - it's just superfluous to our needs, and we don't have the space to stash it away. It's only been used for a month and is essentially new in every respect. The photos speak for themselves.

Ridiculously photogenic computer case box. That ray of sunlight falling on it like that! Also, you can get a sense of just how frickin' big this box is -- look at the couch is is right in front of.
BACKSTORY: Building my new computer! We decided to name it Thailog. Thailog ("Goliath" spelled backwards) is the evil twin of Goliath from the cartoon Gargoyles. Carolyn's computer is named after Goliath, so it just makes sense that Clint's computer is the evil twinof Carolyn's computer.
So here we are in 2016, when 4K/Ultra-HD footage is becoming sort of inevitable. HD video editing had already pushed computers to the limit, but 4K isn’t just a doubling of that resolution: it’s literally four times as many pixels to crunch. And to deal with it, cameras are compressing files down more than ever, taking much more computing power to unpack on-the-fly when you’re editing. Can you buy a complete computer system off-the-shelf (or online) that keeps up?
Filmmakers are a niche market to computer manufacturers, even where there’s crossover with gamers. So, they don’t design systems that target the unique demands of video editors. What are these demands, and for each, what is the current state-of-the-art?
- Fast central processing unit (CPU) with overclocking: Intel Skylake
- Fast storage drives: Solid State Disk (SSD)
- Dedicated graphics processing unit (GPU) card: Nvidia GTX 900-series
- Large, fast DRAM memory: DDR4
- Expansible operating system (OS): Windows 10
That last item on the list is ammunition for warfare, pitting nerds against hipsters, but if you’re in the Church of Jobs anyway, read no further. This case study simply focuses upon building a Windows system, and my choice isn’t about loyalty or style: just getting maximum power. Laptops are totally out of the game: their portability isn’t worth it.
But setting aside an OS war, our first fork in the road is choosing the CPU, and there are basically two kinds, in the whole world of computers we’d use: AMD and Intel. For reasons and arguments not worth fleshing out, it’s best just to say that they are always neck-and-neck, but Intel always edges out AMD. Famously upgrading their CPUs within a “tick-tock” time frame, Intel recently launched their Skylake CPUs (the “tock” of a bigger boost in their product line), numbered in the 6000s. I went with the Core i7-6700K, which is a middle ground between their current fastest and slowest CPUs, while that “K” suffix means the chip is unlocked, allowing “overclocking” which we’ll get to soon.
This is a picture of the motherboard I stripped clean, before upgrading. One of the great things about building your own system is, you don’t need to throw everything away. Blu-Ray drives and hard disks and fans and cases remain as compatible as ever. Re-using them is frugal and environmentally friendly!
