During the Ronald McDonald House Ski Challenge, Red met his idol and could not resist being photographed with him. He was a good sport, even if he said that was one of the more unusual request.

Few people know of the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide yet this colourless, odourless liquid is responsible for the deaths of thousands of people every year.

Strobist: Yongnuo 560 II speedlight (my cheapest!) duct taped to the side of the bath, close to the water I was trying to drown myself in; optically triggered by partially obscured on camera flash. Combination of nakedness, water, selftimer, darkness and expensive electronic equipment... priceless.

I've been persevering with my paper clip water loading technique! The refracted image in the droplets is of a 1950's Smith's pocket watch! I can see me using this technique many times over the course of my project 365!

Thanks to everyone who suggested ways of loading the paper clip with water yesterday! I eventually went with Reciprocity's suggestion of using a pointed wooden cocktail stick, dipped in water, and dragged across the clip. Go check out his amazing stream!

Beautiful morning light. Breathtaking!

I am back from Scotland, though at one point I thought I'd never get there. I should learn not to take precautions with my car and just trust it to get there. The last time I took a long trip, I thought I'd check the pressure in the tyres and top them up a bit, only for the air pressure machine to pluck the valve out after I'd finished. Then, after the difficult process of changing the tyre, I learned from the garage that as my tyres have a sensor that detects the pressure, I had to pay an extortionate sum to have it fixed. I pointed out that the stupid computer on my car tells me at various points of every journey that I have a puncture. Usually followed by telling me that my tyre pressure is too low. Then that my tyre pressure isn't monitored at all. At these moments (and each is accompanied by an ear-splitting beep and dazzling flashing light), I often shout 'Which is it?! Tell me! If my tyre pressure isn't monitored how do you know I have a puncture!' I am not sure if this ranting has the desired effect, but it usually quietens down the beeping, possibly as I can only hear my own voice.

Anyway, in recent days the beeps and warning lights had been building in frequency, with messages reported that suggested my brake lights were out. Also that my my indicator lights were out, and my fog lights were out. Of these, the fog light warning concerned me least. I have owned this car for a year and there is no button anywhere that switches on the fog lights. The manual has no mention of fog lights. There may be fog lights, and mine may be out, but given there is no earthly way to switch them on, I don't care. Indicators and brake lights were a different matter though, so before I set off I took the car to the garage and had a full check over, lights, tyres, the lot.

There were no lights out as it happened. The computer can detect when they've dimmed ever so slightly apparently. So while I can see they are on, and the mechanics can see they are on, and other road users can see they are on, my car's computer knows they are at 99.9% brightness and so beeps each time I brake. And each time I indicate. And each time it gets foggy most likely. Anyway, that is by the by. Having taken the precaution of checking everything, I promptly broke down on the motorway, a full 0.7 miles after starting the journey. I called the AA (Automobile Association, not Alcoholics Anonymous, though if I'd had any booze in the car I'd have had it...) The guy arrived and established that in his professional opinion my car was 'knackered'. He towed me to a nearby garage who charged me an extortionate amount to find out the problem and an an extortionate amount to fix the problem. But fix it they did, and apart from the beeping that seemed to accompany every second of the six hour journey ahead, the vehicle did at least, appear to go.

None of this did much to advance the cause of photography. In the remaining light there were a few potential sights, but I felt loathe to stop having only just got going. Finally the destination was reached, and thankfully it was very nice indeed - a lighthouse cottage on a small rocky island. The owner of the cottage, a very nice Sheila (that was her name, I've not gone all Antipodean) saw the car approaching and came over to greet the modest hero of the hour (and me). Now, being English I didn't want to give the impression of being a southern softy. So, when she offered me her hand I gave it a good, hearty shake. She seemed to wince a little, but smiled and led a tour of the cottage. The place was really fantastic, with everything looking new and clean and shiny, but still fitting in really nicely with this historic location. When Sheila reached the kitchen, she said she'd left a few bits and pieces in the freezer and would take them back to her own house now. She proceeded to remove a bag of frozen sausages which slipped and spilled onto the floor, sending them to all four corners of the room. 'Ach, I'm sorry about this, its just that its nae long since ah broke mah wrist.' That explained the earlier wince, as the fact she had a cast on suddenly burned into my brain.

With Sheila away to pop some painkillers, the camera came out and I got this picture.

Mappleton Church, East Yorkshire. If you view it large on black, you can see a cross in the bottom left hand corner of the lit window of the church - that was luck, not judgement.

A million photos later, my neighbors think I'm crazy.

Ahhh, so many countless bad outtakes...

Don't worry folks. I wiped down the top of the fire hydrant with Chlorox Wipes. Ha

This is what I like about Chicago - right after the snowfall :-) Everything is covered with snow and you see everything turn beautiful.

I'm pissed off to death today. I feel aching and not so talkative.

tomorrow I'm going to go to the doctor's, hoping he could tell me what's going wrong with my body lately. but I'm quite sure I'll draw a blank.

oggi sto proprio scazzata all'inverosimile. mi sento dolorante e poco loquace.

domattina all'alba mi imbarco dal dottore, sperando che almeno lui sappia trovare un nome a questi dolorini poco rassicuranti che mi tengono compagnia negli ultimi giorni. ma ho la netta sensazione che farò un bel buco nell'acqua.

ODC - Flowers in B&W

Wasn't expecting to see any flowers this morning, but there were some snowdrops out in the hedgerows, perfect for the ODC B&W flowers theme.

Thanks to Lori for the title.

My hubby after an hour of shoveling. We've had about 20 cm so far and it is continuing to fall heavily.

The kids have a snow day. There was so much excitement once the plow finished creating a huge pile in the middle of our court.

Off to bake chocolate chip cookies now.
