Claudia Dery’s history with the Harris Center dates all the way back to 1988, when she interned with us as a graduate student at Antioch University New England. She then went on become our summer camp director and one of our teacher-naturalists, where she worked with her own intern — now longtime Harris Center naturalist — Susie Spikol on the "Rot and Roll" Festival, celebrating soil and decomposition. For the last ten years, Claudia has taught at the Wells Memorial School in Harrisville, where she collaborates with Harris Center teacher-naturalist Jenna Spear on a bee curriculum that has led to the creation of a new pollinator garden on the school grounds. At the heart of all of Claudia’s teaching is creating surprising, playful, and memorable experiences for children in the outdoors. Claudia truly embodies the values that we hold so dear here at the Harris Center, and we are delighted to recognize her as the 2018 Educator of the Year.

The King of Spain trophy dates back to 1929 when CYC member Owen Churchill competed for and won the trophy on many occasions. King Alphonse of Spain originally dedicated the trophy in 1928 to promote racing in the eight-meter class. Mr. Churchill, an Olympic Gold medalist, had won the trophy six times in eight tries and playfully enforced his "ownership rights" by retiring the trophy. In 1968, Churchill was persuaded to bring the trophy back to CYC where it was re-dedicated for winners of various Olympic Class competitions. In the late 1970's, the trophy was dedicated solely to the International Star Class as it remains today. In 2010, 30 boats competed for the beautiful silver replica of an early sailing ship.
The Tomb of Safdarjang, which dates from the 1750s, shows in many ways how Mughal architecture had declined since its heyday during the 16th and 17th centuries, although it is still a fine building. Safdarjang, Nawab of Oudh, was appointed prime minister by Emperor Ahmed Shah Bahadur when he succeeded to the throne in 1748; the former made so many enemies, that he wasn't in office for long and died in 1754. This photograph is of the principal (east) elevation of the tomb. Perhaps one day the channel will be re-filled with water, so as to reflect the tomb in it.

The poster dates from an era when local railway stations had a glue bucket and mop to put up posters. I remember the glue bucket (and the old posters that came by the railways mail system at the station I worked at, happy days. Much simpler way of life
36 years later having been covered up decades ago by the modern perspex poster boards. It was in good condition under the circumstances.
