Photography information: All of the images in this database were captured with the Macropod.

The Macropod is a rigid, portable photomacrography system, which allows the user to make razor sharp, fully focused photographs of small sized specimens at 18 to 26-megapixel resolution. It overcomes the extreme Depth of Field (DOF) limitations inherent in optics designed to image smaller specimens. Normally, lenses designed for macro will only render a very small fraction of the depth of targeted specimen in sharp focus at any one exposure. The Macropod allows the user to select and make multiple exposures in precise increments along the Z-axis (depth) such that each exposure’s area of sharp focus overlaps with the previous and next exposure. These source images are then transferred to a computer and merged by an image-stacking program. Zerene Stacker is used to find and stitch together only the focused pixels from each exposure into one image. The Macropod integrates industry-leading components in a novel and elegant way to achieve these results.

Hannah FATTOOCH

Beloved son of Farady FATTOOCH

Who was drowned in the wreck of the “Kapanui” in Auckland Harbour

December 23rd 1905

Aged 19 years

Hannah Fattooch beloved son of Farady Fattooch who was drowned in the wreck of the "Kapanui" in Auckland Harbour 23 Dec 1905 aged 19 yrs

Area 2 Block Q Lot No 37

Surname noted in cemetery database as FATOOCK.

His body was recovered badly decomposed on 3 January 1906[3]

Interestingly enough in a newspaper list of passengers and crew, Hannah does not appear:

paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=s...

However, in this newspaper article an Assyrian hawker aged 18 named as James FLETCHER, does appear. I would say that Hannah FATTOOCH anglicised his name and this is him. Hannah’s grave also has non English script on it.

paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=s...

He also appears in reports as John FLETCHER.

Portrait in comments section below:

At the inquest to-day on the bodies of John Fletcher and Frederick Heavey, which were recovered from the ,Kapanui. disclosed the fact that Fletcher was a Syrian hawker, his real name being Hannah. Fatoveh (sic). He was 19 (sic) years of age. Mr J. T. Osbome identified the other body as that of his stepson, a youth of 17. The Coroner stated that the Marino Court would deal with the Claymore- Kapanui decision on January 9, when the question whether the deaths were the result of negligence or pure -accident would be threshed out.

The inquest was adjourned to January 24th. [5]

THE KAPANUI DISASTER.

For the second time in a very few years the Christmas festivities of Auckland have been saddened by one of those sudden tragedies which come like' a bolt from the blue. One would have imagined that to steamers accustomed to ply our harbour waters, they were as familiarly known as Queen-street, and whatever risk of collision there might be from stranger vessels our own coastal steamers would, be as safe among their consorts as in dry dock. Yet on Saturday night, the popular Christmas Eve, the Claymore and the Kapanui met in collision, off the Devonport shore, and five lives were lost when the Kapanui sank. In sympathising with the friends and relatives of those so suddenly struck from life to death, we can do no more than point to the profound sadness which overspread the city as rumour of the tragedy was passed from mouth to mouth. It was immediately felt that the loss was a personal one, and there was no merrymaking yesterday at which kindly thoughts were not constantly given to those whose feasting had been turned to mourning by this most woeful happening. Nor was it without solemn and earnest gratitude that it was as universally recognised how easily the Claymore might have accompanied the Kapanui to the bottom, and how providential was the escape of that crowded steamer from a fate that might have draped a hundred homes in the sable symbol of death. But while we profoundly sympathise with the sorrowing, and are unfeignedly thankful that Auckland was spared what might have been the deadliest tragedy that has ever befallen our home-staying people, we must not forget that it is the public duty to discover the specific cause of this most grievous happening. The public may rest satisfied that in the official inquiry which will be held the circumstances will be thoroughly sifted, and it will then be time to insist that necessary precautions shall be taken to prevent any possibility of recurrence. THE RECENT HARBOUR DISASTER.

TOWING THE KAPANUI TO SHORE.

Yesterday morning Messrs. D. Gouk and Sons, the contractors for the raising of the sunken steamer Kapanui had everything in readiness for the towing of the steamer over to Judge's Bay, on the southern shore of the harbour, but the work was greatly impeded by the severe southerly wind and the strong tide running. The wire ropes which had been placed around the steamer on Thursday by the diver of the cable steamer Iris, were made fast to one of the scows and towards the time of low water a start was made with the towing, the company's steamer Kotiti rendering assistance, being relieved in the evening by the Durham. Good progress was made, but at high, water the work had, of course, to be suspended until this morning. It is anticipated that the steamer will be beached to-day or to-morrow. [2]

The Jury's Verdict Arrest of Captain Southgate

Charged with Manslaughter

The inquest on the recovered bodies of the victims of the Kapanui disaster, which occurred in the harbour on the night of December 23rd, concluded yesterday, and the jury brought in a verdict that tho death of Clark was due to crushing, while that of Heavey and Fletcher was due to drowning, and that the deaths of all three were occasioned by the improper navigation of James Southgate, the captain of the Kapanui.

Captain Southgate was then arrested on a charge of manslaughter, and was taken before a Justice of the Peace and released on bail, He is to appear before the Police Court to-day.

Later,

Captain Southgate was charged at tho Police Court this morning with manslaughter, and was remanded to Friday bail as formerly being allowed[4]

Noted later was: “The Auckland Herald urging the recommendation of the Kapanui Inquiry Court, “That a sufficient number of water police should be appointed for the port of Auckland,” should command the attention and approval of the Police Department. It is stated that the previously limited number of water police has gradually been retrenched almost to extinction. The Herald says “this state of affairs repeatedly gives rise to grave difficulties and is responsible for the scandals that frequently disgrace Auckland waters.” [6]

I'm not a huge fan of the TV Licensing Authority (although I love the fact that the licence means that UK TV is far from rubbish), but I do like their current run of adverts. It's not that original, but they've avoided the "city at night" version and this does somehow have the dingy sixties look of the real city.
