The love affair between Zeus and Callisto
plaster cast of a gem - Oxford; Beazley Gem database

****************************************************************
In Greek mythology, Callisto or Kallisto was a nymph, or the daughter of King Lycaon; the myth varies in such details. She was one of the followers of Artemis (Diana for the Romans) who attracted Zeus. According to some writers, Zeus transformed himself into the figure of Artemis to lure Callisto and seduce her. She became pregnant and when this was eventually discovered, she was expelled from Artemis's group, after which a furious Hera, the wife of Zeus, transformed her into a bear. Later, just as she was about to be killed by her son when he was hunting, she was set among the stars as Ursa Major ("the Great Bear"). She was the bear-mother of the Arcadians, through her son Arcas by Zeus.

After detailed research and a prolonged hunt, US Army WT85 was located at Gosford N.S.W. in October 2015.
'US Army WT85' - 'Protrude'/'Koolya' was a 45ft WW2 US Army wooden towboat.
Earlier vessel history can be viewed HERE
After several years of researchers trying to locate the Protrude it was with some considerable jubilation when we walked onto Gosford breakwall on 24th October 2015 and finally set eyes on this elusive but tough little boat.
From a historical perspective this vessel has assumed immense significance to the community of Tuncurry NSW.
US Army WT 85 is the last vessel still in service that was built by Wright Shipyards of Tuncurry NSW, one of Australia's leading wooden shipbuilding firms from the mid 1870's till the mid 1950's.
Wright Shipyards commenced building ships in 1867 with the construction of the schooner Caledonia by company founder, John Wright, and Alexander Croll at Boolambayte Creek near Bungwahl NSW. Wright moved to Tuncurry in 1875 and established shipyards and sawmilling operations. He was the first white settler in Tuncurry with John Wright's son Ernest, the first non-indigenous child born in Tuncurry, taking over the shipyards following the death of his father in 1910.
After the United States declared war in December 1941, the US Army let contracts to various shipyards across Australia to build specialized vessels for the war effort. With construction of steel ships by this time more dominant these wooden towboat contracts were a lifeline to the struggling shipbuilding firm with Wright Shipyards securing a contract to build 45', 66' and 85' wooden boats with five 45' boats similar to the US Army WT 85 pictured above built and launched by Wright Shipyards in the period 1943-44.
This vessel, US Army WT 85, later known Koolya and later still Protrude, was most likely launched on 7th July 1944 and taken out over the Tuncurry - Forster bar by the harbour boat, Eldorado on 24th July 1944 where it was handed over to US Army WT 68 to be towed to Sydney or Newcastle for its final fit out. The Eldorado was a fishing boat owned by Jimmy Nicholson and was appointed as the port duty boat during the war years.
US Army WT 85 is the last of the five WT 85 Class tow boats built by Ernest Wright Shipyards to be still afloat and, more significantly, possibly the last surviving Wright Shipyards built boat. The vessel is currently undergoing restoration by Matt Palmer (2020) and is moored in Pittwater.
In January (tbc) 2013 the vessel, then moored in Blackwall Bay near Ettalong, sank on its mooring.
A salvage company successfully refloated the US Army WT 85 (Protrude) and it was moved to Gosford Breakwall where it remained until attempts were made to restore her.
Wright Shipyards became quite busy fulfilling shipbuilding contracts during WW 2 and this continued into 1946 when Ernest Wright commenced construction of what was to become the shipping company's last major vessel, the Santa Cruz/Norfolk Whaler (120 ft long & 2017.5 gross tons).
Unfortunately Ernest Wright did not live to see his company's last major vessel launched, passing away in that year.
A lingering eight years after construction had commenced, Ernest's son John Wright Junior, finally launched the Santa Cruz/Norfolk Whaler in 1954; with the viability of the shipyards by now in question he closed the shipyards shortly after - thus ending a proud 87 year Wright family shipbuilding dynasty in Tuncurry NSW.
Among many other achievements, the company achieving the record for building the largest wooden ship in NSW to ever see service. That vessel was the Uralba (154.8 ft & 603 gross tons) which was launched at Tuncurry in September 1941.
While the US Army WT 85 - Protrude may not have been a vessel of the huge size of the 'Uralba' its significance is nevertheless historically important as it reflects the massive contribution made to the war effort and the fact that it is the last floating operational vessel built by the Wrights.
The Tuncurry community may hopefully one day see the last surviving remnant of a once proud shipbuilding tradition returned to its birthplace.

Lake Chad is a historically large, shallow, endorheic lake in Africa, the size of which has varied over the centuries. According to the Global Resource Information Database of the United Nations Environment Programme, it shrank as much as 95% from about 1963 to 1998, but "the 2007 (satellite) image shows significant improvement over previous years." Lake Chad is economically important, providing water to more than 68 million people living in the four countries surrounding it (Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria) on the edge of the Sahara Desert.

[Here is a summary of an article by Nathan Vernon Madison, Virginia Commonwealth University. The full article is at www.pulpmags.org/database_pages/astounding_stories.html]
Clayton Publishing Co. released the first issue of Astounding Stories in January 1930. It attracted many SF fans and pulp readers, which aided Astounding’s first three years of survival, until its cancellation during the height of the Great Depression in March 1933. The departure was short-lived because pulp industry giant Street & Smith purchased the title and re-launched it in October 1933. The stock adventure stories that had appeared previously were replaced, with what editor F. Orlin Tremaine dubbed “thought-variants:” stories that were just as interesting and exciting, but also held some scientific or technological truth at their core.
In May 1938, John Wood Campbell, a writer and assistant editor under Tremaine, took over the editorship of Astounding Stories; Cambell would hold this post for thirty-three years—a remarkable tenure in itself—during which time he helped shape science fiction literature for many more decades to come. It was in this period that Campbell discovered such SF mainstays as Lester del Rey, Theodore Sturgeon, Clifford Simak, Isaac Asimov, and L. Ron Hubbard. Hubbard's dianetic theories were introduced to readers of the magazine in May 1950.
Honoring Tremaine’s "thought-variants," Campbell wanted stories that were "from the view of a man involved in the events . . . rather than . . . a story of a gadget," as Lester del Rey described Campbell's approach. As Campbell wrote in an editorial, "It is the man, not the idea or machine that is the essence [of SF]." Campbell paid top dollar, on time, to his authors. This practice guaranteed that not only seasoned SF veterans but also budding hopefuls often submitted their manuscripts to Campbell's editorial offices first. Astounding's letters section, "Brass Tacks," also served as an important venue for communication and discussion within the emerging, organized SF fan community.
Campbell changed the magazine's title to Astounding Science Fiction in 1938, and later to Analog Science Fact & Fiction in 1960. In November 1992, the logo was revised to read "Fiction and Fact" rather than "Fact & Fiction," but Analog is the name by which the magazine is still known to this day. The magazine is included in the library of the International Space Station; and in 2011, it became the longest running continuously published magazine dedicated to the SF genre.

Shire of Nillumbik heritage database 2007:.
.
A sign on this cottage states: `This Cottage was built on a miner's right around 1876..
Originally the home of the Hill Family it then became for almost half a century the home of the Birch Family.' .
Another sign at the boundary states:.
`Claim posted by G Maver 12/11/84' (1984).
.
The early parish plans show this site in April 1873 as creekside land, with no Crown Allotment (CA) designation, but apparently part of John Hill's grant on the adjoining CA78A (2 acres, now vacant), both on the south side of the Watsons Creek. Adjoining properties were in the names of LL Smith (1879), WS Cheshire (1922) and Timothy Shaw. Hill paid ₤5/7/6d for the land. Application for a License to occupy Crown lands on any goldfield or Lands adjacent there to..
.
John Hill, a shoemaker at Kangaroo Ground, had made an Application under the `Land Act 1869' on 30 October 1873 for 2a 3r 29p. The Application was granted 7 November 1873 but in 1874 after a report by Mounted Constable Walsh on the land. Edmund Harland of South Yarra owned it by 1886 and then Honor Birch purchasd it in 1910, converging the Hill and Birch family ownership history. As`Honor Williams, she was the legal owner by 1939 [ VTO]..
.
Constable Walsh's report describes a `slab house or hut 24'x10' with a bark roof, 2 rooms lined with bark inside, slabs in aprt and Calico part, erected December 1878 in `passable repair'. Hill had been absent from the property for some months working elsewhere but had recently returned. The will of Honor Williams (formerly Birch) shows that the Birch family eventually owned this lot (cited as CA78A,B,C) as well as the adjoining `permissive occupancy' (dated 1/1/1938) of CA79A (this site) that was held as a grazing licence under section 121 of the 1928 act. Throughout the official record, the sites known now as CA79A and CA78A appear to be interchangeable, with CA79A non extant in parish plans [ DSE]. Buildings appear to have been erected on CA79 by the owners of CA78A..
.
The first rate records for Edwin Birch, labourer, were in 1872: he was the owner-occupier of `Land Sutton East Riding St Andrews' with an annual value of ₤8. The same annual value was recorded in 1873 but on this occasion a hut was also included in the description [RB]. This was a `house' by 1877 and the annual value had risen to ₤10 in 1878. This coincides with the police report on the Hill property where the hut was stated as built in 1878. Ten years later Birch's name was crossed out in favour of Walter A Harris (?) and soon Honor Young (Honor Birch by 1893) was the owner-occupier and the annual value greatly increased from ₤10 to ₤30 by 1889: this may coincide with the acquisition of more land (listed as 196 acres by 1903). In the Edwardian-era Edwin Samuel Birch (labourer) was the rated owner-occupier and in 1906 the description was `House & Garden' (stated as on CA78A) [ RB]. .
.
The Probate Inventory for Edwin Samuel Birch reveals the following:.
1.181/4 acres of vacant land Allot 52 sec B at Christmas Hills Crown grant 4407/881379 £60.
2.61 acres of vacant land Allot 53 and 54 Sec B at Christmas Hills, Crown grant 4932/986278 and 3172/634255 £120.
3.18 ¼ acres of vacant land Allot 25 Sec D at Christmas hills crown grant 4462/892271 £30.
.
Landed Property under Lease or Licence from the Crown .
20 acres vacant land under licence from crown at Christmas Hills Allot 12 Sec A £30.
.
3 ½ acres on which is a slab house at Christmas Hills Allot 78A held under Miner’s Right £50.
.
The will of Samuel Birch stated:.
All real estate to Honor Mary Birch and all personal property to Honor Birch (wife). As Honor Mary Williams, she was the next owner and her will stated: `…I give and bequeath all the improvements on the land held by me at Christmas Hills under Permissive Occupancy fro the Department of land and Survey consisting of the house property thereon and all the contents of the said house to my nephew Brian Joseph Martin of Christmas Hills aforesaid farmer’. Documents also describe a dairy being built there in 1935 and that the land had been held by permissive occupancy under Section 121 land act 1928 dated 1/1/1938..
.
In 1977 the will of Honor Williams ( former Birch, died 8 July 1976) described the property at CA78A as including a four room, five square house of about 100 years old, with enclosed verandah, including kitchen, combined lounge dining room, bedroom and store room. It was built of `bush slabs' with a corrugated iron roof. there was also a diary erected in 1935. The valuer noted that the buildings were of little value except for their age: $1700 Shire site value, $3000 capital improved value. This property description matches closely what is on this site. Another description of the permissive occupancy (.75 ha) had a 90 year old double-fronted timber dwelling of bush timber with a timber slab floor and internal masonite lining: sleepout, living, kitchen, 2 bedrooms, bathroom, with a fuel stove and sink in the kitchen and a bath in the bathroom. Structurally it was in a `reasonable' condition for its age. Only the dairy, among the various outbuildings, had any value. Fences were post and wire, the pasture had regrowth of bracken and scrub with blackberry. There was also a list of furniture in the house varying from 15-50 years old, or `very old'. Honor owned 121 acres in total, as compared with the 196 acres of c1900. After Honor's death, George Williams, Walter and Brian Martin were for a brief period co-owners, selling to the MMBW in 1978 [ VTO]..
.
More recently Creig Maver has claimed a miner's right for the land.
