So I thought I turned Steam to offline mode and put my computer to sleep. When I came back and turned it on. It turned on auto updates as well, so it downloaded and installed the new update. I had a backup of the exe and dll. Pretty all the files in the FO folder except the data folder, but my game is still messed up. Main menu is jacked. Cant exit the game properly. Some F4SE mods work, others don't. I'm done till a new F4SE update comes out and even when that does I think this whole thing about trying to turn my hard drive into a data warehouse with their paid mods that just reinstall after you delete them has put a really bad taste in my mouth. See you guys around......

---Republican John Foster Dulles travelled so much by plane that people said he took to the air to avoid being a sitting duck for Congressional Democrats

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Foster Dulles (February 25, 1888 – May 24, 1959) was an American statesman who served as Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1959. He was a significant figure in the early Cold War era, advocating an aggressive stance against communism around the world. He advocated support of the French in their war against the Viet Minh in Indochina and famously refused to shake the hand of Zhou Enlai at the Geneva Conference in 1954.

Born in Washington D.C., he was the son of a Presbyterian minister and attended public schools in Watertown, NY. After attending Princeton University and The George Washington University he joined the New York City law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell, where he specialized in international law. He tried to join the United States Army during World War I but was rejected because of poor eyesight. Instead, Dulles got an Army commission as captain in the War Industries Board.

Both his grandfather John W. Foster and his uncle Robert Lansing served as Secretary of State. He was also the older brother of Allen Welsh Dulles, Director of Central Intelligence under Eisenhower. His son Avery Robert Dulles converted to Catholicism and became the first American priest to be directly appointed to Cardinal, although his advanced age prohibited him from voting in the College of Cardinals in 2005 following the death of Pope John Paul II.

Political career

In 1918 Woodrow Wilson appointed Dulles as legal counsel to the United States delegation to the Versailles Peace Conference where he served under his uncle, Robert Lansing, then Secretary of State. Dulles made an early impression as a junior diplomat by clearly and forcefully arguing against imposing crushing reparations on Germany. Afterwards he served as a member of the War Reparations Committee at the request of President Wilson. Dulles, a deeply religious man, attended numerous international conferences of churchmen during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1924, he was the defense counsel in the church trial of Rev. Harry Emerson Fosdick, who had been charged with heresy by opponents in the denomination, a case settled when Fosdick, a liberal Baptist, resigned his pulpit in the Presbyterian Church, which he had never joined. Dulles also became a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell. In the 1930's, according to Stephen Kinzer's 2006 book "Overthrow", Dulles was an active supporter and collaborator with the Nazis.

Dulles was a close associate of Thomas E. Dewey who became the presidential candidate of the United States Republican Party in the U.S. presidential election, 1944. During the election Dulles served as Dewey's foreign policy adviser.

In 1945 Dulles participated in the San Francisco Conference and worked as adviser to Arthur H. Vandenberg and helped draft the preamble to the United Nations Charter. He subsequently attended the United Nations General Assembly as a United States delegate in 1946, 1947 and 1950. Dulles was appointed to the United States Senate as a Republican from New York on July 7, 1949, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Democrat Robert F. Wagner. Dulles served from July 7, 1949, to November 8, 1949, when a successor, Herbert Lehman, was elected, having beaten Dulles in a special election to fill the senate vacancy.

In 1950, Dulles published War or Peace, a critical analysis of the American policy of containment, which at the time was favored by many of the foreign policy elites in Washington. Dulles criticized the foreign policy of Harry S. Truman. He argued that containment should be replaced by a policy of "liberation". However, he still carried out Truman's policy in neutralizing the Taiwan Strait during the Korean War in the Treaty of Peace with Japan of 1951. When Dwight Eisenhower became President in January, 1953, he appointed Dulles as his Secretary of State.

Secretary of State

Dulles with president Eisenhower in 1956As Secretary of State Dulles spent considerable time building up NATO as part of his strategy of controlling Soviet expansion by threatening massive retaliation in event of a war. In 1950 he helped instigate the ANZUS Treaty for mutual protection with Australia and New Zealand. One of his first major policy shifts towards a more aggressive posture against communism, Dulles directed the CIA in March of 1953 to draft plans to overthrow the Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh in Iran [1]. This led directly to the Coup d'état via Operation Ajax which installed Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as the Shah of Iran.

Dulles was also the architect of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) that was created in 1954. The treaty, signed by representatives of the United States, Australia, Britain, France, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand, provided for collective action against aggression.

Dulles was one of the pioneers of Mutually Assured Destruction and brinkmanship. In an article written for Life Magazine Dulles defined his policy of brinkmanship: "The ability to get to the verge without getting into the war is the necessary art." His critics blamed him for damaging relations with Communist states and contributing to the Cold War.

Dulles upset the leaders of several non-aligned countries when on June 9, 1955, he argued in one speech that "neutrality has increasingly become an obsolete and, except under very exceptional circumstances, it is an immoral and shortsighted conception."

Dulles provided some consternation and amusement to the British, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand ambassadors by his repeated attempts to tell substantially different versions of events to them. Apparently unbeknownst to Dulles the men had all in attended Cambridge together and followed up meetings with Dulles by comparing notes and reporting the discrepancies to their home countries.

In 1956 Dulles strongly opposed the Anglo-French invasion of the Suez Canal, Egypt (October-November 1956). However, by 1958 he was an outspoken opponent of President Gamal Abdel Nasser and stopped him from receiving weapons from the United States. This policy seemingly backfired, enabling the Soviet Union to gain influence in the Middle East.

Dulles also served as the former Chairman and Co-founder of the Commission on a Just and Durable Peace of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America (succeeded by the National Council of Churches), Chairman of the Board for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a former Trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation, and a founding member of the Council of Foreign Relations.

Death and legacy

Suffering from cancer, Dulles was forced by his declining health to resign from office in April 1959. He died in Washington, D.C. on May 24, 1959, at the age of 71, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1959.

The Washington Dulles International Airport (located in Dulles, Virginia) and John Foster Dulles High School (Sugar Land, Texas) were both named in honor of Dulles.

Carol Burnett first rose to prominence in the 1950s singing a novelty song, "I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles"; more recently, Gil Scott Heron commented "John Foster Dulles ain't nothing but the name of an airport now" in the song "B-Movie".

Thomas Bertram Lance, known as Bert Lance, (Born June 3, 1931 in Gainesville, Georgia) is an American politician and businessman.

Lance was a close adviser and friend to candidate for President Jimmy Carter, during Carter's successful 1976 campaign. After Carter's victory, Lance was named director of the Office of Management and the Budget (OMB). Within six months of Lance's assuming this position, questions were raised by the press and Congress about mismanagement and corruption when Lance was Chairman of the Board of Calhoun National Bank of Calhoun, Georgia. He became an embarrassment to Carter's administration, especially given the reputation that Carter had tried to build of uncorruptablity in the wake of the Watergate scandal of the Nixon administration earlier in the 1970s. Lance resigned as OMB director on September 21, 1977. In the very public trial that followed, Mr. Lance was subsequently acquitted of all charges.

In 1981, Lance returned to the Calhoun National Bank, again as Chairman. He left in 1986.

Press reports have suggested that Lance was involved in the BCCI scandal of the 1980s and early 1990s.

Popular references

Shortly after Lance's resignation as OMB Director, on the Saturday Night Live television show, John Belushi (playing Lance) and Dan Aykroyd (playing Jimmy Carter) performed an advertising parody. The skit was a commercial for the "National Express" credit card, a parody of then-current American Express commercials.

One famouse press article that contributed greatly to the groundswell against Bert Lance in 1976 was an article by William Safire, called Carter's Broken Lance, for which Safire earned a Pulitzer Prize.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Harold McEwen Ickes (born September 4, 1939) was deputy White House chief of staff for President Bill Clinton. He is the son of Harold L. Ickes, who was Secretary of the Interior under Franklin D. Roosevelt. Ickes chaired Clinton's presidential campaign in New York in 1992. Before that, he was a senior advisor to David Dinkins' successful mayoral election in 1989. In 2000, he was a senior advisor to Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign. He now heads the Media Fund, a 527 committee. . He was also an initial contender against Howard Dean for the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

As a member of the DNC's Rules committee he was a proponent of adding other states besides Iowa and New Hampshire early on in the Presidential nominating calendar. He was unsucessful in his promotion of Alabama as the second primary state, behind New Hampshire, which lost to South Carolina.

Since 2005 Ickes has been associated with a George Soros funded Democratic data collection and voter file organization called "Data Warehouse".

The New York City Police Department (NYPD), officially the City of New York Police Department, is the largest municipal police force in the United States. Established in 1845, the agency has primary responsibilities in law enforcement and investigation within the five boroughs of New York City. The NYPD is one of the oldest police departments established in the U.S., tracing its roots back to the nineteenth century.

The NYPD has a broad array of specialized services, including the Emergency Service Unit, K9, harbor patrol, air support, bomb disposal, counter-terrorism, criminal intelligence, anti-gang, anti-organized crime, narcotics, public transportation, and public housing; the New York City Transit Police and New York City Housing Authority Police Department were fully integrated into the NYPD in 1995. According to the department, its mission is to "enforce the laws, preserve the peace, reduce fear, and provide for a safe environment." The department's regulations are compiled in title 38 of the New York City Rules.

In June 2004, there were about 40,000 sworn officers plus several thousand civilian employees; in June 2005, the number of officers dropped to 35,000. As of December 2011, that figure increased slightly to over 36,600, helped by the graduation of a class of 1,500 from the New York City Police Academy. The NYPD's current authorized uniformed strength is 34,450. There are also approximately 4,500 Auxiliary Police Officers, 5,000 School Safety Agents, 2,300 Traffic Enforcement Agents, and 370 Traffic Enforcement Supervisors currently employed by the department. The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association of the City of New York (NYC PBA), the largest municipal police union in the United States, represents over 50,000 active and retired NYC police officers.

The NYPD Intelligence Division & Counter-Terrorism Bureau has officers stationed in 11 cities internationally. In the 1990s the department developed a CompStat system of management which has also since been established in other cities.

The NYPD is headquartered at 1 Police Plaza, located on Park Row in Lower Manhattan across the street from City Hall.

The NYPD has extensive crime scene investigation and laboratory resources, as well as units which assist with computer crime investigations. The NYPD runs a "Real Time Crime Center", essentially a large search engine and data warehouse operated by detectives to assist officers in the field with their investigations. A Domain Awareness System, a joint project of Microsoft and the NYPD, links 6,000 closed-circuit television cameras, license plate readers, and other surveillance devices into an integrated system

Well, here I am, getting ready to write about my day tomorrow, as indicated in Mission 28 of The Mission by Nicotext. Weird stuff, I tell ya...

Dear Graham,

Tomorrow will be a little like this:

I will wake up about 5:20 AM and hit the snooze button. Then, I'll roll over and go back to sleep. This time, Peyri will be next to me, even though she wasn't next to me for the last 2 mornings. I'll snuggle up next to Peyri and it will be a little cold in the bedroom. I'll search for a cold spot on the pillow, nuzzle my head into that cold spot and then smile as I try to go back to sleep. The alarm will go off for the second time around 5:35 AM and I'll hit snooze again. But this time, I'll think about getting up. But instead of getting up, I'll roll over again and go back to sleep. Then, 10 minutes later, before the alarm goes off for the third time, I'll wake up, and go to the bathroom. Then, I'll go into the kitchen, feed the cat, and make coffee. I'll probably have to grind some fresh coffee in order to make a pot. Afterwards, I'll wander back to the bathroom and shave. At that point, I'll be good and cold and I'll go jump back in bed. After a few minutes, I'll wake Peyri up and then we'll jump in the shower.

After showering, I'll grab a cup of coffee and then start getting ready. I'm not sure what I'll wear. And I'll poke around in the closet for a shirt I want to wear and then figure out if I have some pants that I want to wear with that shirt. I'll turn on the steamer and drink my coffee while I steam my pants and shirt. After getting dressed, I'll wander into the kitchen and fix Peyri and I up a little lunch of some sort. But I may be hard pressed to scrape some lunch fixings up for tomorrow. Around 7:10 AM I will be mostly ready to go. Peyri will probably need another 10 minutes, so I'll enjoy another cup of coffee and then we'll drive up the hill and Peyri will drop me off at work.

After a kiss goodbye, I'll walk into the southwestern end of the Ed Center and wander down the hall to room 1008, navigate through the cubicle hallway and plop down my lunch, computer, and wallet on my desk. My laptop bag will unzip to reveal my IBM ThinkPad Z60m and I'll toss it in the dock and boot her up. While I'm waiting for the machine to boot up, I'll throw my keys and wallet in the desk and put my bag on the floor, put my lunch in the fridge, and change the red push pin on my calendar that marks today. I'll login and open up my standard apps: Outlook, Firefox, and Windows Explorer.

Picking up from yesterday, I'll open up SharePoint and navigate to the data warehouse project site to find the document I've been working on for the Staff Scheduling Fact. Yesterday, I validated a handful of fields in this fact build and now I'll proceed to validate a few more by examining and querying data warehouse data and then comparing to source system data. I expect this to be rather boring, but seeing as I'm close to finishing with this fact, I'll look forward to getting it done and moving on.

After I spend some time on the data warehouse, I'll undoubtedly get bored and switch gears to something else. I'm thinking I may look at the latitude and longitude data from the demographers and think about what the SQL Server table should look like to hold that data. Or maybe I'll get distracted with some email that will float in. Or maybe I'll spend some time working on the new Query Writer view that displays enrollment history information for students. Something will need to occupy my time to keep me from drifting off into boredom. Switch gears, stretch, put on some music, and refocus...

About 6 hours later I'll be numb with work and decide to pack up and go home. Maybe Peyri will call and then swing by to get me. Or maybe I'll walk home in the dusk, around 5:00 PM, and smile as I think about relaxing the rest of the night.

At home, I'll peel off my work clothes and slip into a fresh pair of jeans and a t-shirt. then I'll slide into my reef's and flip flop into the living room. I'll check out the mail that arrived today, talk to Amber and try to get out of work mode. Maybe Peyri and I will have a little snuggle in the bed and I'll let my eyes rest a bit as I remember what things are like when I'm not at work. It could even be that we drift off and nap for a bit until the night settles in outside. Later, we'll wake up and talk about whether we should go get dinner or if we should make something.

I'm guessing that tomorrow we'll make something. I'm thinking some mulligitawny stew sounds good. We were talking about making that the other day. Mmmmm. So we'll figure out what's needed and wander to the store for supplies. Around 7:30 or so we'll return and begin to put together some yummy goodness in a deep stainless steel pot. Coconut and carrots and potatoes and onions. Garlic and green beans. Mmmmm. And Turmeric. That yellowy goodness that brings it all together and gives it a touch of magic. Mmmmuligitawny stew. We'll sit at the table and munch on the stew while we listen to some music, maybe Dr. Dog or maybe something else. The stew will be good and we'll thoroughly enjoy it as we relax and nourish ourselves. There's something special about that creation process, making something with your hands, out of pieces of the earth. Whipping something up with love and warmth, giving it life.

Later, we'll sit with full bellies on the couch. Amber and Peyri will give me a hard time because I won't want to let that kitty on the couch. We'll laugh and relax and eventually switch on the TV for a little something or other. Maybe we'll watch the episode of Medium we recorded last night or maybe we'll finish the rest of The Incredible Mr. Limpet that we started the other day.

Around 10:30 it will start to hit me that I'm ready to roll off into that familiar, snuggly area of warmth and otherworldliness called bed. I love to revisit that sleepy time of solace. That everlasting escapism from this life. Bringing me back to the far reaches of the universe that I've long since forgotten during the day to day doldrums. But we won't go to bed just yet. Instead, we'll watch a little news on NBC and make fun of the weather lady. It may even rain a little tomorrow night.

Peyri and I will say goodnight after the news and Amber will probably stay up a bit longer. I'll load up our toothbrushes with toothpaste and we'll brush together. Then, climb into bed and snuggle down for the night. Peyri will say something about how cold the bed is and I'll say something about how wonderful that cold feeling is. We'll snuggle a little closer and then break out a book to read a few pages. We've been reading Nick Bantock's Forgetting Room the last few nights. We'll read a few pages about Armondito and his Grandpa Rafael and then decided to stop. The lights will go down. The blankets will come up, all snuggly and close to our chins. And we'll talk a bit as we get sleepy. I'll probably be gone within 10 or 15 minutes and I'm guessing Peyri will take 10 minutes longer. The night will envelope us and the hours will drift by as the alarm clock ticks closer and closer to 5:20 AM. We'll revisit those long lost chasms of Cricketon and Poppyton and rove the lands of dreamy pinatas, well aged cheddars, and soft woven socks. The lights will flicker across our eyelids and the world will turn once more as we rest and regain our strength to return for yet another day.

That is how my January 4th, 2007 will be. At least something like that. Maybe.

There's a lot to say and little to do. Nothing more than a honey dripped clue. Nothing left but the smell of fresh dew...

Dell is officially acquiring digital storage company EMC Corporation for approximately $67 billion, marking one of the biggest technology mergers in history.

Hopkinton, Mass.-based EMC, a 36-year-old industry fixture that makes data, and storage products for businesses, has a market value of about $50 billion. Round Rock, Texas-based Dell, which rose to prominence in the 1990s thanks to its cheap, customizable laptops, went private in 2013 for $24.4 billion.

Both companies were darlings of the first big technology boom in the 1990s: Dell sold PCs; EMC sold corporate storage systems. As the computing market shifted, both companies expanded into new areas. While Dell still sells laptops, displays, and servers, it also sells security services, cloud management software, and business integration services. Investment in those areas has accelerated since 2010, the year Dell bought Boomi, a company that manages services between clouds. Since taking the company private in 2013, Dell has struck partnerships with a host of cloud providers, talked up so-called converged architectures, and created private clouds for its own customers.

EMC meanwhile has focused on high-end enterprise storage equipment that’s less threatened by the cloud computing revolution. It has also made key investments in new business areas, such as its 2004 acquisition of VMware, which makes the virtualization software that gave rise to cloud computing in the mid-2000s, its 2010 acquisition of Greenplum, which made data warehouse software, and the 2013 launch of Pivotal, which makes data analytics software. EMC’s “federation” business model—traditional EMC at its center; VMware (which went public in 2007 and now has a market cap of about $34 billion), RSA and Pivotal orbiting it—has been applauded for allowing the parent company to reap the benefits of the newer companies’ success without impeding their innovation. In more recent years investors such as Elliot Management have looked to break it up in the interest of extracting more value.

So why pair Dell and EMC?

For EMC’s part, Dell is simply an attractive buyer—especially if Hewlett-Packard didn’t bite and Cisco is unlikely to. In the world of big IT equipment providers, Dell is the last man standing, one reason that the company may appeal to EMC and its bankers.

For Dell’s part, EMC offers additional assets in storage, security, and data analytics, thanks to Pivotal. Dell lacks EMC’s clout in the enterprise storage business, a credit to EMC’s VNX enterprise storage arrays, and that is desirous to the folks in Round Rock. EMC’s storage products are an additional boon to Dell’s strategy if the latter company decides that it wants to become what people in the industry call a “converged infrastructure provider”—in other words, a provider of all-in-one boxes that offer networking, storage and computing. Cisco pioneered the concept with its Unified Computing System servers; HP followed suit. Here, Dell has put a toe in the water with last year’s deal with Nutanix, but there otherwise hasn’t been much progress on that front.

There’s one catch for Dell, though: VMware. The company’s growth has been slowing as its customers increasingly choose “open source” alternatives that promise to be cheaper and more versatile than proprietary options. And one of the companies pushing open networking happens to be Dell, making VMware integration at odds with the Texas company’s ethos.

So if you’re Dell, and you’re in the market to buy EMC, there’s a lot to like in that company’s portfolio. (And we haven’t even mentioned the computer security company RSA.) But does it all add up enough to justify tens of billions of dollars for the entire package? Probably not. And nothing about such a deal addresses the existential plight of both companies: a future where their core businesses (and profit centers) are under attack and facing almost certain decline.

And that’s why technologists are still scratching their heads.
