DART 8140 arrives into the recently opened Grand Canal Dock Station, with the impressive Aviva Stadium in the rear of the photo.

What a revelation this electric sets were when introduced on Dublin's commuter belt, replacing clapped out diesel carraiges.

8140 is one of the original 8100 class, built by GEC and Linke-Hofmann-Busch & later upgraded by Siemens.

Amongst the large gum trees on one of our local creeks the Darters appear to have bred well this season. From one vantage point I counted 4 nests. This being the closest and most visible. Here Mum is having a rest in the light rain whilst the chicks look on....patiently awaiting some activity that may signal a feed.

Darter "Anhinga melanogaster."

Also known as.....Diver, Needle-beak Shag or Snake bird.

The Darter is a fishing bird related to cormorants with a stiletto like bill and snake like neck. They swim underwater and often impale small fish etc with a sudden thrust forward of their neck and open bill.

On the surface, Darters swim with their body submerged and only their neck and head visible, hence the name "snake-bird."

An Arctic Tern, darting straight over my head

Part 3 of my “models from 2021” posting. This year my models had be invited to attend the Strathtay Scottish running day held by Angus Transport Group and Dundee Museum of Transport. The three models pictured here were completed in time to be featured on my Forfar Prior Road diorama during the event. Pictured are a Leyland Tiger, East Lancs Myllenium Hyline rebody, an East Lancs Spryte Dart and a Leyland Leopard Alexander Y Type in the modern livery - the only time a Strathtay y type wore this livery was in promotional artwork, and now with this model. Finally, I added to my Travel Dundee fleet with this code 3 Dart Pointer, finished with Sunrise transfers.

Dart '0', which was in Brighton livery with only an RB front end, is now fully dressed in fleet livery and has a proper number; 101. The Robertson Buses crack team of crackpot engineers have been back at the Enviro-Darts again, with 101 being the first full conversion in a few years, plus heavy overhaul and standardisation of two more (and a third in progress).

For the record, since I haven't mentioned in a while, "Enviro Dart", "E-Dart" or simply just re-engined Dart refers to one of these Plaxton Pointer SLF Darts which has been upgraded with a 6.7 litre Cummins ISB engine, the same as what is found in the larger variants of Enviro 200 MMC.

On the back of this one is a big £2 fare promotion sticker. Quite a few buses in the fleet have smaller versions of these stuck in the windscreen or front door area. But then I decided to take these photos from the offside which means you probably won't be able to see them.

The quintessential English sports car cockpit, such an inviting place to enjoy a drive.

Today I caught up with Dart 61. The bus is dry stored tucked up in shed 4 at the top of the site. Modern classic among some cracking classics. Its stands out just how high floored old buses are when a low floor is parked next to them.

2011 Alexander Dennis Enviro 200 Dart integral body/chassis with a Cummins ISBe 4.5 litre inline 4 diesel engine, Reg.YX61BXJ of ASD Coaches on a NHS Shuttle Bus service to Chatham Hospital at Chatham Quays, 28 October 2022.

Originally introduced in 2003 by Transbus (formed in 2000 by the merger of Alexander, Dennis and Plaxton) as a replacement for the Plaxton Pointer 2 body, the Alexander ALX200 body, and the Dennis Dart SLF chassis, the Transbus Enviro 200 Dart was effectively a semi-integral bus employing an updated version of the ALX200 body and Dart SLF chassis combination. However, available options were the Enviro 200 body with the MAN 14.240 chassis; or the Enviro 200 chassis with the Optare Esteem or MCV Evolution bodies. Production stopped in 2018.

Many thanks to all who choose to comment/fav........much appreciated

An express courier aircraft.

As the trade in greebles grew increasingly important to the economy of the galaxy, mini-fig hands were used for more and more purposes, as were other body parts. Arms smuggling became a major problem across the galactic disc. Greebles were grown in vats and then rushed to eagerly waiting MOCers to be used whilst the ABS was still fresh. A specialist courier service grew up around this trade and Dai's Dart was part of this.

Llwyngwril Space Systems were commissioned by the Tarren Trade Authority to design a practical and useful VTOL transport plane. It had to be capable of landing in small spaces to make deliveries of high-value items in built-up cities. Unfortunately the designers' search of the internet turned up plans of the Convair XFY-1 Pogo and so they decided to base their aircraft on this.

The unusual shape of the Dart was also down to the architects at Llwyngwril Space Systems deciding to take a spaceship design and stick a piston engine and propellor on the back. The engine used was the Watt & Pritney Cerberus, notorious for needing a lot of maintenance due to leaky gaskets on its eight cylinder heads.

Some versions of the Dart were equipped with drop tanks to increase their range. The nose cone hinged down as the cargo hatch and could also be opened for rescuers to gain access to cockpit in an emergency. The version illustrated here was flown by Dai Roberts, on the planet of Abergynolwyn VII. It was also equipped with a search light and weather radar to help it fly through the notoriously cloudy mountains of Eryri. Dai's company owned 6 of these aircraft, which were always kept immaculately clean. Dai Roberts was famous for his tidy darts.

Although the Dart met the specification for VTOL in confined spaces, the cockpit was awkward to access and the cargo hatch was even worse. Once again, a ladder was need to climb in and out. 137 years later, an investigation by the Galactic Revenue & Customs revealed that Llwyngwril Ladders Ltd. was a wholly owned subsisduary of Llwyngwril Space Systems.

FOURTH WALL TIME...

The main inspiration for this build has to be Jon Hall and especially his chapter in the Lego Adventure Book. I also liked Nathan DeCastro's Skypirates and other MOCs. Lastly, doing a degree in aeronautical engineering and loving the Dastardly & Muttley cartoons must have played their part too. The background story is better viewed on this model's MOCpages page.

At a time when the original Plaxton Pointer SLF Dart's are being decimated around the South East, Sheerness still boasts an allocation of eight examples although for how much longer remains to be seen as newer ex-London stock becomes available for use.
