I couldn't chase 511 east without hitting up the other two classic locations in Windsor Junction and Waverley. The shot across the lake looked promising, but as 511 rolled out onto the causeway, the clouds rolled out too. I figured at this point it didn't matter what angle I chose so I went with my third pick and capitalized as well as one could under overcast skies. With a much closer look at the mismatched number boards on 2427, CN 511 east rolls past intermediate signal, H17 in Waverley. Typically this would be a darksider at this time of day, but due to the lack of sun, it worked out just fine.
The idea for this castle was inspired by the art of Frank Frazetta and my time playing the video games Darksiders, Skyrim, and Castlevania.
Knapp Hill is a great asset when following a westbound train. I was able to scoot ahead and set up at Hersey. I decided this darksider was in order despite placing me on the "stuck" side of the tracks until the whole train passed. From here the train will pickup speed and the towns get closer together conspiring to limit the options between here and Minnesota. At 107 cars, this ALSS wasn't crazy big by 2025 standards, especially with an AC4400CW DPU pushing on the rear. Once over the hill it didn't take long to be back up to track speed. January 20, 2025.

As any railfan can attest to, sometimes things don't always go as planned, as was the case yesterday. I had seen at least one photo from this location before, and although it would mainly be a darksider in the late morning light, I wanted to try my hand at it. CBNS 701's crew arrived at Duyker's Greenhouses in Afton shortly before 0900 ADT, to take control of the eastbound "306" into Tupper. After scouting this location previously in the morning, my friend and I hustled back here to ensure we would get this frame. Unfortunately, as I attempted a 10 point turn or so for the second time in the day, I miscalculated, and well, the Rav4 got stuck, quite literally. At least we were both able to bag 701 hauling eastbound past St. Peter's Catholic Church with a healthy 49 cars trailing and nary a cloud in the sky. An hour and $50 less later, a more humble Caleb raced towards Cape Breton to salvage what was left of the "chase".

Nearly didn't make this one!
Yesterday's surprise 4 loco DRS light-engine move, whilst welcome, caused one of those "several buses turn up at once" scenarios, arriving almost on top of the departure time of the Workington Port - Carlisle Yard containers.
After photting the darksiders I could see the shunter heading for the docks ground-frame in his little van so legged it to the car sharpish.
There wasn't time for any heroics in the location department so I zipped just up the road to Siddick, the nearest place where the whole train would fit in the frame.
On arrival I just had time to reach the UWC and bodge up a bit of composition.
It was never gonna be a prize-winner in the gloom of yesterday but it could've been worse.
No.66101 leads the consist off the grade which takes the line up to Siddick from Oldside, which was the location of the recent Workington North temporary station.
Another archive shot which has benefitted from some PS tweaking.

"What would you ask of this humble merchant?"
Happy to share with you my newest creation: Vulgrim from the Darksiders-series! Built for the release of Darksiders 3.
He is built entirely out of LEGO, including his coat.
The first two Darksiders are hidden gems of the gaming world. And I enjoyed playing both of them a lot. They incorporated the design-philosophy of the Zelda-series very well and the art style is quite unique. It is great to see the series continue! And since the ending of the first game, I am hoping to see the story of all four of the horsemen!
So I was really excited to bring one of the characters to life in LEGO form. And the choice was an obvious one!
The demon handler Vulgrim doesn't just look awesome, he is the also the most entertaining character in the games. With his cheeky demeanour, you can never really trust him. But as long as you feed him enough souls he offers you the best abilities.
If you want to recreate Vulgrim's head as a desk piece, you can find the instructions here and the part list here!
Gotta say it was pretty tough to do a pano while wallhugging, along with catching each shot in between the menu transition!

The M-28 crossing about 8 miles west of Trout Lake and a couple miles east of Raco Junction was not a premo spot for shooting as the light most often sucked. I seldom if ever shot here, especially westbounds that tended to operate in the early afternoon during the SOO era. My Sister was somewhat of a good sport about my "train chasing years" and would occasionally take a shot for me if presented with the opportunity. In this case she wasn't really concerned with the lighting and took this darksider/backlit view of 711 amd 706 leading a paltry 6 cars towards Marquette on March 10, 1987. It's a shot I'd never have taken but at this point one I'm glad I have. Laurie Butson photo, Chuck Schwesinger collection.
Videogames Characters Tribute - STARCRAFT - Queen of Blades
Famous and one of the main recurrent character in the StarCraft Series, Sarah Kerrigan, better known as the Queen of Blades, powerful ruler of the Swarm of the Zerg race.

CN 2969 & CN 8017 lead a B787 out of Winnipeg heading west with potash empties, seen here approaching Diamond. Unfortunately, when Mark and I saw these guys, we were heading the wrong way, and long story short when we got turned around, a pan was all I could muster as Mark tried to match the speed, and in my opinion did so beautifully! So a shot that would've been a garbage darksider turned out alright!
