In what is becoming a yearly journey to visit friends on the range for winter photography we tried something different (for me) at an often shot location on the Two Harbors Sub. Loads from Minntac steam past Biwabik in the early morning. Thanks to DanK for the tour.
It's June 5, 1982, and it looks like I got energetic while on duty at Argo tower. Instead of staying on the porch, inspecting the train and taking a darksider photo, I crossed the tracks and shot P53 from the sun side. The southbound pig train has a clear on the diamonds (thanks to me) and the GM&O GP38AC and IC friend are not wasting any time taking the light. I'm not sure if P53 was considered a "Slingshot" since it had two engines instead of the usual single one, and the train was longer than the normal short Slingshot. I was just happy to see a GM&O on home rails.
I saw an eastbound move at 44th Avenue that did not appear to stop, and with no route on the Midway Sub, I deduced it was a UP from the Twin Ports going down the St. Paul side. I found a sliver of light at the curve along the Transitway just as the UP came under 280 and was able to get the shot. Three units, with the correct one in the lead, head for the Belt Yard down at the Bluffs.
unfortunately, There is no free camera available for this game, i have taken some of the screenshots with the help of fov slider in the game.

Before leaving home for my final walk to Finnish Bistro, I noted an eastbound CP working Shoreham and their tailend hanging out on the West Runner. By the time I made it down to the Transitway, the track indication on the West Runner had disappeared, and a highball greeted me at Union Jct, so I knew they must have been on the move and probably on the approach to Park Jct. No sooner did I setup at the curve here, they came around the corner at Park Jct.
I pulled this double-darksider shot off with a UP a few weeks prior and thus knew I had the sliver of light. The telephoto view of the curve always looked nice here, though I am not sure why I did not try this early morning, shoot-the-gap more while I was down at the U. I guess I figured there was not enough of a sliver.

A forty mile per hour dust cloud machine disguised as Union Pacific's southbound Guadalupe Hauler, gets ready to turn the corner at Faria Beach as the train makes a run for Oxnard. The large cloud of dust and sand is in part to the empty gondolas that have collected sand and dirt from sitting on the coast for six months in storage with flat wheels to boot. Mixed with the wind that is pretty constant on the coast I was very glad I opted for this spot as opposed to the other side of the tracks at North Seacliff.

While the sun hadn't quite crept over to the side of the tracks I was on Union Pacific 8880 crosses the 1,000 foot long Arlington Viaduct over the Santa Ana River. With 7,000 feet of containers from 9th street in the Port Of Long Beach as the train heads for the Norfolk Southern at Ashland Avenue in Chicago just under 2,100 miles away.

Elba was our next spot, and after darting around on back roads we got to town just before he did. The weeds along the ROW didn't allow for much of a shot on the other side of the tracks, so we opted for a good darksider.
The old elevator and the ex-BN SD40-2 really hearken back to a time that is often forgotten in today's landscape. I would take this over cityscape scenes any day.
The light was fading, so we followed him on the highway north through Cotesfield, trying to get as many shots as we could before the sun dipped below the hills. We ended up making it to outside Scotia before sunset ended our trip. Jamie set up his camera for a group photo to remember the chase and we headed back home.
Damn good day.
