Well to quote the late, great Leonard Cohen "I see you've gone and changed your name again". I first learned the scientific name of Dark Green Fritillary as Argynnis aglaia, then it changed to Mesoacidalia aglaja, then back to Argynnis aglaja, and now it is Speyeria aglaja. Speyeria is a genus of large fritillary butterflies with sixteen species across North America plus three in Eurasia, including this species. The genus was resurrected in 2017 and the name honours German entomologist Adolph Speyer (1812-1892). The specific scientific name aglaja was one of the three Graces in Greek mythology who personified elegance and beauty. Interestingly the other two Graces (Euphrosyne and Athalia) had British fritillaries named after them too.

The Dark Green Fritillary is the commonest and most widespread of our eight resident fritillaries in Britain, but they are still not what I would call a common butterfly. And they can be infuriatingly difficult to photograph, rarely settling, and when they do it is often deep among the grass. I photographed this male at a limestone grassland site in South Yorkshire. The original name was Darkned (sic) Green Fritillary, showing it was the butterfly that was dark, rather than the shade of green on the underwings.
