I took this photo when I was at a low point in my life. I feel the tone of the photo, especially the clouds, matches my feelings at the time, dark and angry with light trying to push its way through.

May 4th, 2012 - Northern Buffalo County Nebraska US

I Seriously, wasn't going to go out this night... Had a weeks worth of hell, and I really just wanted to do was get off work and go home. I was tired, I was cranky, it was the first weekend I've had off in a Month...

As soon as I pulled into the driveway @home, I could hear the weather radio going off and my storm capturing sensation came over me. Listening to the bullitins coming over the radio and I Freaked!. The storms were closer than I had thought. NWS just put warnings for Northern Buffalo County for super fast development of strong to potentially super severe, with large hail, and possible Tornadoes.

Photography Chance of a lifetime... Even though someone could cast me as a member of the Walking Dead....I was a trooper and I didn't wimp out! Luckily I had the my camera on the charger... Grabbed all my equipment & I hauled A** North... 20 mins later I found myself in the perfect spot, under the perfect conditions!

Cresting over northern Buffalo County, ready to cross between Pleasanton & Ravenna Nebraska, this cell was rapidly building and already had tornado warning on it. Incredible CG lightning in front of the storm cell was just to good to capture, with lighting firing off every few seconds.

It was simply one of the best storm chases for 2015. As night was upon us we still had a 3 hour drive back home.

Its that time of year when storm cells redevelop out in western Kansas / Nebraska and just go on all night. We were in the path of most of these redeveloping cells on that nights drive back.

Intense cc and cg lightning accompanied these cells. I can't say that I didn't stop and take a few captures....

Sharing Exposures - Decisive Moment

The clouds were drifting away from the sun. At this moment when I could have the most of the sun from the clouds I clicked the picture. I played around a little with the colours to give it the burning blaze and voila!

A nice setup for severe weather on the plains that afternoon. Moderate Risk day in Western Nebraska and Eastern Colorado, Western Kansas....

It took about 4 hours to get to the starting point, but all is worth the time I take to plan and get out to get some good severe weather action.

I had a choice that afternoon to follow this first cell or to wait for the next one... Without all the technical terms and jargon....I had the perfect setup for possible tornadoes that afternoon, but this storm that I choose (the 2nd cell and not this one) wasn't going to produce any till way after I quit chasing it down on the Kansas Oklahoma border. Its the chance that I take when it approaches. You NEVER know what its going to do.

I've been rather lucky chasing in this area over the past 20+ Years... Caught my fair share of Naders. This day didn't produce what I was looking for But Mother nature was talking I was Listening.

This sky was EPIC....

Storm clouds descend over the marsh as light fades beneath an advancing sky. In black and white, the landscape becomes less about weather and more about anticipation—a quiet moment when the marsh stands on edge, suspended between stillness and the first falling rain.

This was a refreshing find. :)

Edit (Jan. 6/09): Having driven by since, this photo is now nothing but historical evidence.

At sunrise recently I photo-captured these massive dark clouds in the eastern sky. Somewhere deep beneath that all-encompassing cloud build-up is the North Cascade Mountain Range of Washington State, USA.

Late July 2023...

This month of storms was just down right jaw dropping. Why not continue since we didn't have any storms in May or June! Overtime for July is the way I like it!

90% of the time of year in South Central Nebraska is Hot & Humid. It is normally the beginning of our dry season. But not in 2023.

In the path of the Jet Stream that day that forced some severe thunderstorm development over south central Nebraska. We were not excepting anything super severe but a tornado or 2 is always possible this time of year.

Gear Primed & excited about the views I'm going to get for this event that day. I knew they were going to be photogenic.

A wicked bad day of severe weather in South Central Nebraska. For more information on that day... NWS Official Report.

A tornadic supercell with an Ef1 or Ef2 tornado struck the city of Kearney late afternoon. The aftermath wasn't pretty. I sure wanted to be out chasing but I was scheduled for work, and missed the entire historic event.

Power was out, but I did have the camera batteries charged. Geared up, with camera in hand after I got home from work. I took a few minutes during clean up that night to capture these incredible cloudscapes that were on the back side of the storms.

These were the final rays, the last light of the day. These clouds were truly some spectacular stormscape captures to end that day of severe weather!

...Set under a black cloud that hides the sun...

More information: The clouds were scattered at first, then it suddenly blacked out, some of the rays were penetrating the clouds making beautiful and amazing patterns on the sea below. It actually looked like lava on water.... This is 1200 m above sea level overlooking the Corinthian.
