Our first non severe thunderstorms of the 2016 season.

I've been itching to get out to capture some Nebraska stormscapes. I was totally satisfied with that afternoons storm front that passed through about 6:30pm.

Not bad for my first batch of storm captures 2016!

I know....I missed 12/365...not much going on that day and I was feeling lazy. BUT! after a week without rain, I couldn't miss getting a shot of the huge storm clouds that rolled in.It made two of my lily plants so happy that they bloomed in the night. (So prepare yourself for the lily pictures later today)

I was hiking from Tannalp to Engstlenalp in the Bernese Oberland, when a thunderstorm was approaching from the East. But I was lucky. It started to rain only after I had reached the Hotel Engstlenalp, where I could relax and get a cold beer. The rain afterwards was really heavy.

Thank you for your visits / comments / faves!

I Seriously, wasn't going to go out this night... Had a weeks worth of hell, and I really just wanted to do was get off work and go home. I was tired, I was cranky, it was the first weekend I've had off in a Month...

As soon as I pulled into the driveway @home, I could hear the weather radio going off and my storm capturing sensation came over me. Listening to the bullitins coming over the radio and I Freaked!. The storms were closer than I had thought. NWS just put warnings for Northern Buffalo County for super fast development of strong to potentially super severe, with large hail, and possible Tornadoes.

Photography Chance of a lifetime... Even though someone could cast me as a member of the Walking Dead....I was a trooper and I didn't wimp out! Luckily I had the my camera on the charger... Grabbed all my equipment & I hauled A** North... 20 mins later I found myself in the perfect spot, under the perfect conditions!

Cresting over northern Buffalo County, ready to cross between Pleasanton & Ravenna Nebraska, this cell was rapidly building and already had tornado warning on it. Incredible CG lightning in front of the storm cell was just to good to capture, with lighting firing off every few seconds.

Late August here in Nebraska. I usually would be chasing out in Western Nebraska Eastern Colorado this time of year. Mother Nature made it dry as a desert here. Record Heat & drought in 2022 on the plains of Nebraska. This was the ONLY storm that came into range for the whole month.

Gear was prepped & ready for a month....I was prepared that afternoon. A short jaunt to my east and then north. Irrigated Corn this time of year here is about 14 feet & it will be ready for harvest soon.

Had to find a good location where there was no tall corn. Found a hill with a perfect view. Lucky to find an open view with all that corn!

Though this didn't produce a tornado. Really good definition of a rotation wall cloud under this supercell. Glad I went out that day to capture these phenomenal snaps!

Beside the fact that I can hardly pass up light poles or power lines and poles and towers, I have an affinity for the time of day when there is still some daylight and the electric lights go on. The color of the electric lights have a special presence that passes when night comes on.

I think that one of my "perfect picture" goals is to really capture what grabs me at this time of the day. But I'm thinking I will need to use a tripod to capture that moment, which of course is less convenient and sometimes not possible in every location.

Still Waiting....

I think this has been the longest I have waited for a severe storm in the past 30 years. Geez....

This storm developed & was severe warned out in the western counties of Nebraska. Of course as soon as it hits the South Central Nebraska Weather Bubble... It died out.

But Still... A Dying Thunderstorm & the Last light of the Day... I couldn't resist!

My 3 yr old son is terrified of lightning and thunderstorms. I'm not sure where he got the name or idea from but he calls the lightning "The Black Hole". I almost titled the image that but it sounded a little ominous especially if you didn't read the description. In the evenings when the thunderstorms roll in and the faint deep rumbles of thunder are heard, he whispers terrified to himself, "The Blackhole!" Then comes running to my arms. We sit in the darkness and I hold him, stroke his hair and talk to him. We talk about the thunder, I tell him why it happens, I tell him funny stories about it. He just listens with his head on my chest. When the storm is over he's up off my lap and life is good again. Even as an adult I still have fears. They aren't of thunderstorms anymore but they can feel just as real. Maybe it's discouragement, a fear of failure, it can be one and the same and I could definitely label it the Dark Hole at times. When my "thunderstorms" roll in, I am learning to give myself the same consideration as I do my son. Stop, talk myself through it, Sit and think in the quiet. I tell myself the logical side of things, the humorous side of things and even give myself a pep talk. Eventually the thunderstorm ends and I feel like a better version of myself. Facing your fears can just mean dealing with them at times. As long as we come out alright on the other end.

On a lighter note, I love thunderstorms. I love the smell of wet rain on the dirt, the bass of the thunder grumbling in the night and the bright flashes of lightning that light up the dark night. And I love cuddling my little boy;)

Here we are again at Sunset central. Another outstanding display by Mother Nature. This may be the last for a bit as it's suppose to rain starting tonight for a week or so!

Exactly what the title states... I felt I was jinxed that evening. Every time I got close it would die off. Nice structure, good development. But it was not to be. It happens sometimes...

A few good opportunities but you had to know where to look. That part I have covered. Took advantage of what was viable for this set of images.

Changed position to the other side of the city. Now on the far east side of the city as the storm have moved a bit south & to the east of my previous location. Again this storm was supposed to move directly over my location but it had other plans.

Final shots of that night... it was super late. I was tired. But I stuck around til the storm faded...

Dark storm clouds loom over a wide, open field, contrasting against the vibrant green grass below. The sky exhibits a dramatic display of colors as the ambient lightning filters through.

East to west, the Dorset landscape changes immensely. This is taken roughly in the middle. In my opinion it needs a point of interest on the road, but cars don't really do it for me.
