Day 38/365

Feeling invigorated by the smell of autumn leaves and the bright colors I went hunting for good photo locations in the woods. I found a stone wall in a little wooded park near my flat but the base was completely snowed under with garbage, a bloody needle crunched under my foot and I was suddenly terrified and then deeply grateful I had chosen to wear tall wood heeled boots of thick leather. I took some photos there, determined to catch the dreadful beauty of the garbage in the dappled orange autumn sun, but the garbage subsumed me and the images looked like I shouldn’t really be there. They were portraits of a place. I became frightened after a while, there were so many terrible things on the ground, this is the last image I took, when I realized I had to get out of there, when the garbage began to feel predatory.

As if golden sand beaches, towering seaside cliffs, crashing waves, and verdant jungles were not enough to keep a photographer busy enough for a couple of weeks, Kauai tossed in a rainbow forest to the mix just to keep things even more interesting.

i had the idea for this shot, but because of the accidental exposure bias, it didn't turn out how I envisioned...but oh well, try again next year...the neighborhood trees are raining leaves beautifully right now. i know it's not going to last long.

Ide Hill village green to be specific - although it was the dappled light on the branches that prompted me to look again and take the picture - the green is just good to look at - very nice village near Sevenoaks - big mortgage anyone?

Scottish multicoloured Heather on the edge of part of the remaining Caledonian forest. Almost a feast for the eyes in such a huge sea of Green.

The kids' paddling pool in the park. The older kids think it's clever to ride their bikes through it, hence the tyre tracks.

Love the range of colors of the foliage at the moment, with the Sourwood leading the way with the red. :-)

Riverside Trees by River Severn

See how the stream does smoothly flow

Silently passing beneath branches that grow

Upon the steep banks that slant to sky

Seeking warm rays, so they can survive.

These leafy arms shade the muted stream

As it weaves its path in constant theme

Through dappled light its forms entrance

Leading the insects in merry dance.

A mossy cloak, worn by each tree

On northern parts that face the lea

And upon this moist and shaded side

The moss the cooler air imbibes.

A refreshing wind picks up and blows

Through the leaves and swaying boughs

Those rhythmic sounds add atmosphere

As the sun in evening, disappears.

The daytime kisses the night goodbye

And leaves us with a dusky sigh

While pungent aromas of mother earth

Rise to the sight of the universe.

There cannot be, a better place than this

Where one can enjoy eternal bliss

Than to stroll beneath the riverside trees

With contented mind… is heaven indeed!

Reflections of sunlight on a wall. The image has been converted to black and white and then treated with the infrared effect

Available for anyone to use as a layer or texture. This has some interesting effects when used as a texture. Rotate it, flip it, lighten it ... It's quite versatile.

Please credit/link back if you use this texture. Thanks :)

An explosion of green in this shot. Be interesting to see how it'll look a couple of months down the line, but that depends on whether the fisherman is still there (guess he might have caught something by then) and whether I can be bothered to walk the same riverbank!

It's not a bad riverbank - in fact it's quite pleasant in a riverbank sort of way - it's just if I'm going to commit to 4 miles foot-padding I could do with a few more opportunities than ducks, swans and the occasional fisherman....

Walking the dog in the bright dry air of a mid-July afternoon, I spotted these curved leaves along the Rail-Trail path. So I fetched a few camera to compare their results. This one seems best: stereo audio, large sensor (aps-c), and sharp lens - here set to auto program with little control of exposure or focus.

A pleasant walk along the Grand Union Canal at Bulbourne, near Tring. Enjoyed the shade from the overhanging trees :)

This is from June, when summer was still fresh and lush and filled with the promises that summer always makes. Now it's November, and another summer has flown by with many of those promises unfulfilled, and opportunities missed.

The weather is going to be cold and wet this weekend, but that only means we'll be having gumbo and potato soup and red beans an' rice, and that's not a bad thing.

And we'll be going to Iowa to see our son soon, regardless of the weather. The only question is whether to fly, or drive. It's a tough call, because I hate flying, but it's an 18-hour drive each way, so...

Just some of the stuff rattling around in my head this morning.

I'm experimenting with a style inspired by painter Michelle Courier, a successful painter from my hometown of Midland MI. Her paintings are characterized by (in my unschooled opinion) by bold colors, dappled light, strong shadows and not a lot of detail in the background (impressionism). I would like your honest opinion, does it work? Or does it not translate to photography? For some reason painters seem to be able to get away with bold colors that are not realistic but look fine in a painting but look out of place in a photograph. Anyway I'm always experimenting with new processes and styles and am trying to figure out if this is something that would appeal to buyers. So be honest, what do you think?

Another outing for the G9 in fairly tough lighting. This is a little footbridge over the Drim river In Goodwick Pembrokeshire. I had many happy hours playing here with my mates as a child, and it still invokes fond memories every time I pass that way.
