38th Whittlesey Straw Bear 2017
In Whittlesea, from when no one quite knows, it was the custom on the Tuesday following Plough Monday (the 1st Monday after Twelfth Night) to dress one of the confraternity of the plough in straw and call him a 'Straw Bear'. A newspaper of 1882 reports that "... he was then taken around the town to entertain by his frantic and clumsy gestures the good folk who had on the previous day subscribed to the rustics, a spread of beer, tobacco and beef".
The tradition fell into decline at the end of the 19th century, the last sighting being in 1909 as it appears that an over-zealous police inspector had forbidden 'Straw Bears' as a form of cadging.
Revival
The custom was revived in 1980 by the Whittlesea Society, and for the first time in seventy years a 'Straw Bear' was seen on the streets accompanied by his attendant keeper, musicians and dancers, about 30 in all. Various public houses were visited around the town as convenient places for the 'Bear' and dancers to perform in front of an audience - with much needed refreshment available.
My friend Alison (lower right) was in town and asked if I was free for a shoot. I thought I wouldn't be, so I hadn't made any other plans for the day.
It was a really fun shoot except for two things:
1. Directing was really hard since I only knew three of their names. And only two of them had sufficiently distinguishing features so I could refer to them ("glasses girl" and "the one who's a dude").
2. It rained like a mo'fo right before the shoot, so everything was kind of muddy.

Name: Mohammed Afsar Khan
Age: 27 Years
Village: Chorbhatti, Chhattisgarh, Central India
Occupation: Tractor owner/driver
Afsar’s forefathers had always performed with bears. He never liked the profession but with no formal education or financial backing to change his career, he reluctantly continued his family’s tradition. Afsar says he ‘lost his youth’ to bear dancing so when he was given the opportunity to join the WSPA and WTI programme he readily gave up his bear to start a new life for himself, his wife and young children.
With WSPA and WTI support Afsar and his family purchased a second hand tractor and began transporting bricks from the local kiln to shops and markets. His family’s business has been so successful Afsar has gone on to purchase another tractor, a scooter and bike which he also uses to courier and transport goods. Afsar says he now has a ‘happy, peaceful life’.

Fortunately, dancing bears are forbidden now. At least in Germany.

Nancy Tillman inspiration, part 2.
I've decided to begin a project recreating Nancy Tillman's amazing drawings but in photographic form. This image was inspired by her drawing entitled, "Dancing Bears".

I was pleased to find this great example of Inuit art along the Windsor riverwalk. I love the work of the Canadian native people. It has such reverence for nature, coupled with a light hearted and beautiful style.
One of over 31 sculptures on display in Odette Sculpture Park (Assumption Park) in Windsor, Ontario, the Dancing Bear is a favorite amongst many visitors.
Created by Pauta Saila, an artist born in 1916 on Baffin Island, the Dancing Bear stands on exhibit in the Odette Sculpture Park (Assumption Park) in Windsor, Ontario in Canada. The Dancing Bear, made of bronze, stands 8 feet high and is a reminder of the power of an Arctic Polar Bear displayed in an intricate and simplified but playful way.
Pauta Saila's work has been shown in hundreds of shows and is not only found at Assumption Park but many other pieces are displayed in public and private collections. The Dancing Bear is one of more than 31 large scale sculptures found throughout Odette Sculpture Park (Assumption Park) in Windsor, Ontario.

I brought Ozzy to a Coffee Shop where they allow dogs outside at the tables. He had whipped cream from my Pumpkin Iced Coffee, which was more like a huge milkshake. Ozzy loved it.

Some of the essential artifacts from the original Dancing Bears Lounge adorn the new space as a way to remember and pay homage to the past. The two enduring bear statues that once watched over the main entrance of the DBL for example now serve as twirling sentries at the front door overlooking Main Street while the irreplaceable Dancing Bears mural commissioned by Peter Roland now hangs on the wall directly next to the bar. www.highpeaksresort.com

Welcome to a world where animals dance and children fly. Where princes battle dragons and hope battles despair. To a world where ideas matter, and music saves the day.

Name: Aziz Khan
Age: 40
Village: Kongia Kalan, Central India
Aziz used to make limited earnings from performing with his dancing bear Chandi before he decided to change his career and began assisting at a bakery in a town near to his village Kongia Kalan. WSPA and WTI supported his training by Master Baker Dadu and helped Aziz set-up his own bakery earlier this year. He now makes 350 loaves of bread each day and earns 300-400 rupees! His bakery not only supports Aziz, his wife and three small children but also provides employment for two other former bear dancing Kalandar families. Aziz says he is happy because by not having to travel and perform with Chandi anymore his family is now settled and his ‘children’s lives are being made’ as they attend school.
I saw Willie, his bear, and his partner Evelyn near downtown several times. His dancing bear grabbed my attention almost immediately. While there are a lot of people in search of money, Willie's method sure takes the cake for creativity. So today I finally stopped and asked him if I could photograph him and his bear. He kindly (Willie is an amazingly kind and gentle guy) accepted and began putting the bear through its hip-gyrating moves. In addition to burning up the pavement with ursine dance moves, Willie is a burgeoning comic artist. I'm going to try to help him get published... if you know any good outlets in which to showcase up andcoming artwork (aside from Tumblr) please let me know!
