Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the annual outdoor Battery Dance Festival went virtual this year, like so many other performances.

So there was no live festival and most of the international dance companies that participated did so via video.

But NYC let the Festival film a handful of the performers live, albeit in the very early morning, as a way to discourage curious onlookers. These are some of the companies that participated; but this necessarily is a very small sampling.

After the guest display their presents of pigs and buffaloes, the traditional Ma'badong song and dance is performed. This is a ceremonial re-enactment of the cycle of human life and the life story of the deceased. It is also a farewell to the soul of the deceased, and relays the hope that the soul will arrive in the afterworld safely. This is considered by many Torajans to be the most important component of the funeral ceremony.

I was driving from New Delhi to see the Taj Mahal in Agra . During one of the stops a man showed up with...a cobra. He played his melody and the cobra danced rhythmically. It was a show I've never seen before! 😊
