XXIII National Dance Competition named after Alina Janikowska "The Magic of Dance". 1st day, 18:45 - 19:15. Ostrów Wielkopolski, Poland, June 14, 2025.
Highland dancing is a form of dance requiring technique, stamina, and strength and is recognized as a sport by the Sport Council of Scotland. The occasion was the Dixon Scottish Games and Gathering where I happened upon a highland dancing competition. This is an event that I had never previously attended, but I was instantly intrigued by the performances of the competitors. Most of the dancers were young females, but three young boys were also among the competitors. The combination of athleticism and artistry displayed was impressive. Aside from watching a caber tossing competition I ended up spending most of my time at the games and gathering event watching and photographing the dancing competition.
Like many events familiar to sports photographers the dancing competition was held in a building with poor lighting. Most of the settings on my Nikon D750 + 24-120 f/4 were the same ones I have been using recently to shoot volleyball and basketball games. Exposure was 1/640 and f/4 with ISO varying from 7200 to 12800. I shot aperture preferred with auto ISO.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the annual outdoor Battery Dance Festival went virtual this year, like so many other performances.
So there was no live festival and most of the international dance companies that participated did so via video.
But NYC let the Festival film a handful of the performers live, albeit in the very early morning, as a way to discourage curious onlookers. These are some of the companies that participated; but this necessarily is a very small sampling.
