Kuchipudi is a classical dance form of South India. It takes its name from a small village called Kuchipudi, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, where it was born.
Expressive dance, or abhinaya, is a narrative aspect where each part of the body is used to bring alive the text, poem or story, recited in the song.
The hand gestures - mudras - are codified into a very precise language. The facial expressions are stylised so as to convey a wide range of complex and subtle sentiments and feelings. The whole body comes alive to communicate the emotions which arise from the song.
Kuchipudi is a harmonious combination of these two aspects, alternating moments of pure dance, rhythmic, bright, vivacious, full of beauty and grace, and narrative moments based on the Hindu mythology, where the focus is on the use of gestures, facial expressions and body language.
Dr. Shobha Naidu is among the foremost Kuchipudi dancers of India. She mastered the technique of Kuchipudi and began dancing lead roles in dance-dramas while still very young. She has performed with her guru's troupe all over the country and abroad, excelling in the roles of Satyabhama and Padmavati.

Karagattam Karagam is a folk dance with musical accompaniment. Balancing a water pot on the head the dancer performs. Traditionally, the villagers in praise of the rain goddess Mari Amman and river goddess, Gangai Amman, performed this dance with water pots balanced on their heads. In Sangam literature, this dance is mentioned as Kudakoothu. This dance has two parts, the Aatta Karagam and the Shakti Karagam. More often it is danced with decorated pots on the head and is known as Aatta Karagam and this symbolises joy and merriment. Aatta Karagam is performed only in temples, while the Shakti Karagam is mainly entertainment. Karagattam is one of the more popular rural dances today. Earlier it was performed only with accompaniment of the Naiyandi Melam but now it includes songs also.

The Brokpa Lion Dance (Ache Lhamo) is unique to far eastern Bhutan. It is performed in honor of Goddess Penden Lhamo and Lady Jhomo. We only saw an abbreviated version of it since it can go on for as long as five days!
