Digitised image from the Town Hall Photographer's Collection - GB127.M850

The Town Hall Photographer’s Collection is a large photographic collection held in Manchester City Council’s Central Library archives, ranging in date from 1956 to 2007.

The collection consists of tens of thousands of images, covering the varied areas of work of Manchester Corporation and latterly, Manchester City Council.

The photographs were taken by staff photographers, who were tasked to document the work of Corporation/Council departments and, in doing so, captured many aspects of Manchester life and history, including significant changes to the Manchester landscape.

The collection includes many different formats from glass negatives, to slides, prints, CDs and even a couple of cine films.

What is especially exciting is that the majority of these images have never before been available in a digital format and therefore have only ever been seen by a handful of people.

A team of dedicated Staff and Volunteers are currently working on the systematic digitisation of the negatives held within the collection.

This album represents the result of their work to date.

"Over half a century of public service" was the proud boast of West Bromwich Corporation Transport Department - and one of their many Daimler buses can been seen here on one of the few 'scenic' parts of the borough's main street. The department would soon succumb to WMPTE - and you could debate if bus services are now seen as a public service the way the old borough's saw it. That coat-of-arms or armorial device brings back some memories - it was on the side of the handsome buses and above the stage of my junior school - how many mornings did I sing 'Jerusalem' whilst reading "Labor Omnia Vincit"!

A good example of an early '30s coach - this built by Daimler of Coventry but sadly no details as to the coachwork or operator.

Possibly based on some type of Chinese bodied Daimler half-cab is this wonderful little Matchbox sized bus by Aoli. A full metal body ensures a nice weighty feel in a way we will never seen again on a Matchbox bus plus more scale model themed features such as rubber tyres. Can anyone identify the exact type of Daimler this is based on? Part of a 12 vehicle set bought directly from China. Mint and boxed.

Two 'replica' buses carrying passengers at Beamish Museum, County Durham. The one nearest the camera is a very good copy of a Daimler c1910, and the red vehicle in General colours is a fair representation of an LGOC B type. The General bus was originally used in Cornwall.
