This is a replica of a dagger found in one of the royal tombs, from c.2500BC.

These flies are just so fascinating we had to go and get more photos. This is one of the flies after it had been stealing nectar from the as yet unopened flower. Something had made a hole in the bud. See photos below of the fly with its proboscis feeding from the side and top of a flower.

 

So much fun!

 

It was interesting watching them feed, fight and mate

About 30mm long, found indoors. Either the grey dagger moth, Acronicta psi, or the dark dagger, A. tridens - the caterpillars are different but the moths are apparently very similar.
