The Grey Dagger (Acronicta psi) is a moth of the family Noctuidae.

Local walk, 20.6.22.

Boat bow piece sits quite nicely here... Just another, boring nose mod.

The Grey Dagger (Acronicta psi) is a moth of the family Noctuidae. It is found from Europe and North Africa to northern Iran, Central Asia, southern and central Siberia and Mongolia. In the Levant it is found in Lebanon and Israel.

This species has grey forewings with bold black dagger-shaped markings. (The Latin specific name also refers to these markings, as resembling the Greek letter psi ψ.) The hindwings are dirty grey, generally paler in the male. The wingspan is 34-45 mm. The Grey Dagger flies at night from June to August [1] and is attracted to light and sometimes to sugar.

The larva seen here is whitish below and black above with red spots and a bold yellow stripe along the back. It has a distinctive horn just behind the head (absent from the larva of Dark Dagger). It feeds on a wide range of plants, mainly trees and shrubs (see list below). The species overwinters as a pupa.

I was quite surprised to see this as they are usually flying by now, will keep an eye on him to see how he develops.

A Heavily-armed starship with a couple of integrated excursion suits. Maybe they're pirates, or bounty hunters, or just a couple of women who like to mess stuff up.

It was refreshing to find this little dagger all stretched out, instead of curled into the typical "dagger pose" we know so well.

I first saw this about 2"-long Dagger moth caterpillar (Acronicta americana) this morning on the garage floor, near the door. I gently brushed it onto the driveway and took this photo. I stepped away for just a moment, and when I returned to take more photos, it had vanished.

According to BugGuide, it is the largest dagger moth in the East. The caterpillar. whose hairs can cause skin irritation, feeds on leaves of alder, ash, birch, elm, hickory, maple, oak, poplar, walnut, willow and other deciduous trees.

These were very difficult to get right. I'm still not sure that I have them as they ought to be.

Despite its politically incorrect name, the Retarded Dagger (Acronicta retardata) is quite the handsome little fellow.

These vibrantly adorned little daggers are among the more rare and seldom seen Acronicta species in my neck of the woods.

They are listed as maple feeders. The few encounters I've witnessed in Maryland have been on Boxelder...one of the woodier maples.

(Thanks to LeAnn Batty for spotting this beauty)

Very nicely restored Delta Dagger on display at the Palm Springs Air Museum

The ancient ceremonial dagger had many uses: Cutting out hearts, cutting out eyes, cutting off... um, cutting out intestines, and cutting up the high priest's food...

Seen in one of the artist studios we visited, obviously not the best setting but I haven't seen this moth before.

I think this is a Grey Dagger moth. Although information online states that the species is impossible to tell apart from the Dark Dagger, given that the Dark Dagger flies in June and July, and the Grey Dagger June to August, the Grey is more likely. Both species are common.

(large)

They are mainly predatory flies and generally small to medium sized, non-metallic and rather bristly. The 'dagger' refers to their sharp, piercing mouthparts. It's on a Red campion (Silene dioica) flower. One handheld shot.. :-)
