My dad is 82 and was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer in January. He started chemotherapy yesterday in the hopes of adding some months to his life. He has lost weight and is short of breath but is in good spirits and without pain at the moment.
My dad and I got to spend a bit of "alone time" in Saguaro National Park the other day. It was the first substantial walk he got out in nature after my mom's passing 3 days before, and I think it was a good thing for him. He loves the desert and hiking, and while it was bittersweet, it was one of the first steps he took establishing a new rhythm in his life. I am glad I could be there with him.
Today we arrived in this special part of Morocco... awesome!
Oggi siamo arrivati in questa parte del Marocco, le gole del Dades.. Splendida!

My dad had just arrived in the house and settled into a chair when Curio, who had never met my dad, decided to make a new friend. Warms my heart to see their interactions.
Debated but finally decided to post them all at once. All photos are clickable, of course, as always.

This California Quail sheltered 8 chicks under his feathers. It was like a clown car when they started emerging from under his plumage.
dad gave katie his mardi gras hat and beads from the party at the center... she had them on for almost 2 days... and dad liked his kiss on the cheek from his granddaughter!!
The trip out to the ELR was last years birthday pressie for him, it just happened to be days before his next birthday. 82 today.
I've also been looking at old family slides lately. While I cannot compete with the ultimate coolness of Joey's family, this one did make me smile. Go larger.
Yes friends, that crazy cat with the pipe and the checked suit is my dad.
He labelled this slide, "Me at Murray Bay '40. " That would make him 25 here. Obviously he's still a bachelor. I have no idea what is up with that shirt under the jacket--apparently some fashion trend which swept eastern Canada but is forgotten now. It's just over the top enough that it also may have been an early glimpse of his later bipolar illness....
I assume that this shot was taken with the camera from his empty leather case; based on the flat front, that was probably his Kodak Retina seen here.
Kodachrome is pretty amazing stuff--the colors of this slide are still looking great after 66 years....
A picture of my dad asleep infront of the tv. I remember how amazed I was with the result, almost shocked. I couldn't believe how much the face actually looked like my dad and I was so proud of this. I believe I made this in 1989. Dad's outfit was one of mum's creations, she used to make a lot of our comfy clothes back then : )
My 2nd cyanotype print.
This is a scan of the print which is roughly 8x8"
The color here is less brilliant because I did not use hydrogen peroxide in the final wash of the print.
Thanks to The Rev. Dr. Klemmer for the correct tone curves for making negatives suitable for this printing process.
Original b/w image elsewhere in my photos.
My dad passed away last night after a full 94 years of life. This is a photo I took of a photo I found in a family album when I visited last October. My guess was that he was in his 30's when it was originally taken. I will scan this and the other photos in the many family albums and share them with my own children in the next couple of years. (It's going to be a long project due to the many albums.)
Herbert H. Bryne Jr. was loved and respected. He was the type of person who, as long as he was physically able, went out to help others. He was a fine father, husband, and community member. He will be missed, not forgotten.
Next week I will be traveling to Maine to do what is needed. I may be off-line at that time. His leaving has been a gradual process. While I am sad that he is gone, I have been prepared for the inevitable.
Thank you in advance for your expressions of concern.
Namaste.

ODC Saints or Sinners.
Well I think my Dad would be the first to admit to having been a bit of both.
His 90th birthday today and we all went out for a celebratory meal then returned home for cake, sparklers, and believe it or not, cups of tea lol! Have loads of photo's to wade through but just too tired to look tonight.
