It's Sunday in Jakarta, Thamrin Street ,normally filled with crowded car, smoky buses, is suddenly turned into freshening area. Yes, It's Car Free Day. Hundreds of people cycling (most fixie) enjoying rare fresh air in Jakarta. Seen on the background is Jakarta's Iconic BNI46 Building.
Jakarta held Car Free Day twice every month (Second and Forth Sunday of the month) in Thamrin and Sudirman Street.

When last we visited our old locale we bought a "his and hers" pair of bicycles from our old neighbours. That was in October. The winter intervened and, apart from a couple of try-outs on the paths near our house, I haven't used mine until today. As I type I'm still aching and my legs are wobbly when I go up and down the stairs. And my sit-upon, well...
Is this what's known as a "mountain bike"? As long as the wheels go round when I pedal it's all the same to me. On the frame (and again on the saddle) it says "Exodus", in letters resembling those used by "urban artists" when they spray their grafitti designs on railway rolling-stock. I'm not sure why. On the rear forks it says "Havoc" ...again for no very clear reason.
The area where I now live is heavily wooded, and the woods are publicised as a kind of playground for cyclists. This would be alright if the woods were worth cycling in, but really they're not woods at all, bearing much the same relationship to real forest that a potato field does to an alpine meadow, or a salmon hatchery to a mountain torrent. They are just commercial timber production units. I always wonder when some boffin will come up with the idea of selectively breeding the trees so that they grow with square trunks that can be efficiently sawn into planks of uniform size, without wastage. The trees, all of alien coniferous species producing a dense canopy, march across these sandy heaths in straight lines, only a few feet apart. Nothing grows on the lightless forest floor. Even in the rides and clearings there is nothing more interesting than gorse or heather. But of course, I consume paper and need furniture like everyone else, and want them readily available at a reasonable price. Life is full of contradictions.
Here the Bentos steed is parked next to an information board ...close relative of the "interpretive" boards we see dotted about in "managed" countryside wherever, as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or Special Scientific Interest, nature has become part of the bureaucratic system and leisure a function of the welfare state. So it was off on the "blue" route for me. Luckily there was a sort of cut-off half way around, allowing you to return to your starting point by a short cut.
On the last Friday every March at NUI Maynooth Student’s Union, cyclists mount their bikes heading for Eyre Square Galway (well over 100 miles away). More volunteers follow them. Last year (2011), they raised over €83,500 for Pieta House.
The set of photographs here were taking at Moyvalley in Co. Kildare - and just a mile or so from the border with Co. Meath. The cyclists are about an hour into their journey from Maynooth. The wonderful morning sunrise in the east means that some of the shots of the cyclists as they approach are rather shadowy. But the shots of the cycle bunch (the peleton) as the cycle westwards, towards the next village of Clonard and town of Kinnegad, are very impressive.

Publication which my father (Charles Siple) acquired in 1961. The Dark Age that American cycling has endured is still in evidence in this booklet (so few riders and clubs spread so thin, and the plea ("Bike Clubs Seeking New Members", a list towards the end of the book) which preceeds the "Bike Boom" which finally arrived in the 60's.
I don't even feel I'm wearing 'a hair shirt' because on a bicycle you thread the motorised traffic, shift to parks and canal towpaths, hop off and walk, stop where you like, unrestrained by clamps, meters, cameras and the paperwork and cash that goes with owning an automobile. I enjoy the smells and sounds and sights in a way that makes the inside of a car seem enclosing. I get many a wave and nod and chance conversations with strangers. Cycling makes me feel healthier. Because my bicycle folds I can keep it with me - so have little worry about thieves, who don't understand how it works (except in London). I live in a famous inner city area, but I find my oddity (bloke in suit on folding contraption) earns curiosity, amusement, even respect so long as I return it. I have found a bunch of photos from a year ago. This one was taken on our 3-day cycling trip. It was teh first one for Aron, who did very well, cycling 50 kilometres per day. We stopped at the Lake of Arló, a hidden beauty next to the town of Ózd.

One-off custom cycle truck from Atomic Cycles. Made from two Schwinn frames. The bed folds down for hauling larger items such as bike tires and rims. The 5 speed shifter is made of brass and was repurposed from some areospace hydraulic testing module. The rims are old school bmx. Rattlecan brown paintjob. Moped tire on the front for heavy loads. Less than 100 dollars invested in the total build.
Winter is right around the corner. 8bar team rider Sami and 8bar rookie Jule got the chance to test the new adidas cycling winter clothing.
