One of my favorite things about finding fallen and trimmed branches and logs in LA is the chance to see what's going on in the cross-sections. I've seen paperbarks now for years, but until I got these limbs, I had no idea what was under the layers of spongy bark.

This is some pretty obnoxious sap. I use a spray-on gum and pitch remover from Woodpeckers, but it takes about 20 minutes and several applications each with several-minute-long waits to break it down enough to wipe only a little bit more off, especially in the line above the saw teeth. I've worked at with a wire brush, too, but it does nothing at all. The resin is amazingly tough.
After unloading the second batch, and carrying hauls 1 and 2 behind the gate, this was all that was left as aftermath. In this time period, the cat that visits me almost daily stopped by again, and did her usual thing of disregarding personal safety to constantly be underneath the huge limbs I was carrying and stacking, sniffing them as I strained to lower them carefully to the ground without dropping them on her head. However, a few moments later she came out from behind the gate walking oddly. She somehow hurt her back right foot badly enough that she wouldn't put any pressure on it, hopping on 3 legs. It wasn't the limbs. Nothing fell on her. I think maybe she hurt it earlier, and it just manifested as she was prowling around my yard. I've not known whether she was a stray, so I carefully picked her up - she gently allowed it - and slowly walked her next door, the direction from which she always appears. I've never met the next-door-neighbors, but I couldn't just leave my little friend in pain.
A man answered and said it was indeed his cat. Her name is "Abby." I've been calling her Underfoot, or sometimes Mozilla (mom wanted to name her Mozilla Firefox :), or sweetie, or sweetheart, or 'little one,' and a whole bunch of other cuteness-inspired names. I told him I loved her visits, but that today she seemed hurt for reasons unknown. He told me he'd get her to the vet, and I felt relief as the trouble was handed over to him, literally, as I handed her over into his arms. Hopefully it is his cat, and he isn't some kind of cat-eater person.
My new $80 pole saw snapped almost immediately. It's a Fiskars brand, and I usually love their stuff, but I'm going to have to return this flimsy thing to Home Depot. Very disappointed. The saw blade was stuck up in the tree, the pole with its broken tip down with me. It would have been very helpful to have it stick around for another 5 cuts or so.
I switched over to the chainsaw. Camille let me plug my electric in behind her couch in the living room. I had a new 100' extension cord, so I didn't dirty her nice, lightly colored rug.
