One of the things I love about being able to find logs and resaw them myself is the discovery. I take pictures of the find, wonder about it while transporting it, bring home leaves and branches - if any - and use them to hunt the species down online, which I've gotten rather good at. Another thing I love is that a few logs can yield quite a lot of useful pieces, which means that I get to practice on several before doing something for keeps, and it means I get to try out a variety of finishes on the end piece, to see what works best. This is such a valuable ability.

From my first batch, these are some various blanks I was able to find in among the bark edges and unfortunate checks. They are coated in Anchorseal, a paraffin-based emulsion that seals the end grain against losing moisture too rapidly, and thus splitting and checking (splitting radially from the pith (tree/log center) out).
