I remember this pattern from a 'best and worst fashion' newspaper story. In it was a photo of Cate Blanchett taken in the late '90's or early 2000's, proving she looked wonderful in anything - including what looked like a tablecloth like this. Bit more blue, certainly. Could have been her eyes.

Anyway, Australian fashion label Romance Was Born is celebrating its 20th, projecting highlights of designs by Ken Done, Del Kathryn Barton, Jenny Kee, Jonathan Zawada and others, in collab with creative studio Supergiant for this great display on Customs House at Vivid.

Visiting the indigene exposition... The objective is to present customs of the daily life and ritual of the indigene/aboriginal peoples who inhabit different indigene lands in the Brazilian region known as Oiapoque, in the extremity north of the country, in the state of Amapá.

Enchanted Sydney by Spinifex Group projected images of Sydney’s flora and fauna onto Customs House. The images morph from aquatic culture to flora and fauna (I liked the ladybirds) and then to acorn-hoarding dwarves, one of whom escapes into space. Easily one of the highlights of this year's Vivid.

Customs House

This is Customs House in Liverpool (one of the "3 graces") in the late Sunset light. It is hard to capture how magnificent these buildings look in the red glow of the Sunset. - I don't know why customs needs a house in Liverpool. I have usually found people's customs on the street, you know, like shaking hands or rubbing noses in greeting etc. Maybe I have the wrong idea there - LOL!

Just been again to New Zealand visiting family for a few days and had a few moments to sketch. (second trip in a month) Timaru has an interesting old port with quite a few old warehouse buildings. I liked this little huddle of warehouses across a gap to the handsome very solid Customs House.

It was pure serendipity that lead me to spend two nights in the historic little city of Maryborough, in Southern Queensland, Australia.

Built in 1899, this beautiful heritage-listed building with its terracotta-clad Dutch-gabled roof now houses a Portside heritage interpretative centre. On the corner opposite, you can see the quirky stainless steel, bronze, copper, and electro-mechanical match-making machine – an installation by artist Russell Anderson.

Customs at 'Bij Sint Jacobs', Gentse Feesten 2014

In Denver, I learned about things besides Spanish colonial art, the reason for the visit.

I also learned that the orange things strung across the street are callled "jerseys," and they were on display in honor of a group of men called the "Denver Bronchos." Evidently the Bronchos had brought fame upon the city by winning the "Super Bowl," a contest in the sport called "football."

That must be the reason why a busy man like the mayor of Denver greets users of the airport trains with the recorded cheer "Go Bronchos!"

Customs House is a building located on Queen Street by the Brisbane River in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was originally used for the collection of customs duty and was both completed and opened in 1889, when Queensland was a British colony... Customs House is a Brisbane landmark known for its distinctive copper dome. The building was designed by Charles McLay of the Queensland Colonial Architect's Office.

The building became redundant when port facilities moved to the Port of Brisbane at the mouth of the Brisbane River, resulting in its closure in April 1988. The building is now leased by the University of Queensland and was refurbished between 1991 and 1994, at a cost of A$7.5 million.

Aldeburgh 11th January 2015-32

For anyone that’s ever made it to Milan, you’ve no doubt spent at least a bit of time within the magnificent Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the famous, arcaded mall adjacent to the equally-famous, equally-magnificent Milan Duomo, between the Piazza del Duomo and the Teatro alla Scala.

And if you’ve been within the Galleria, you likely have heard of the timeless curiosity that is the tradition of stepping on the bull’s balls. Inside the Galleria, located on the ground within an octagonal floor pattern, is a tiled mosaic depicting a bull which is reared up onto his hind legs. The tradition is that if a person puts their right heel on the bull’s testicular region and “turn on himself three times,” which is to actually rotate backwards, or counterclockwise, this will bring good luck. This practice has led to a bit of damage, and a hole has formed showing where the bull receives his daily punishment.

So, what’s the story behind it? Well, most people (especially the Milano locals) say that this tradition is simply a tourist one, that you would never find a local that did this. This might very well be true for the most part, but having friends who are native to Milan, I can say that it is not entirely so; locals may do it, though you may see them pass by nonchalantly, step on the balls without even looking and deftly give it a quick grind as they continue to walk, never breaking stride.

The bull is actually the centerpiece of the Turin Coat of Arms. Turin, or Torino, was one of the most prominent Italian cities, and their symbol is the bull, because Torino literally means “young bull.” (There are the coats of arms of three other prominent Italian cities located nearby – Milan, Florence, and Rome.) As for the story, well, it appears to have been lost to time; Milan’s own tourism portal can’t even say for certain. But at least this tradition appears to be alive for quite awhile further!

Microtron bodies are tough to paint...it probably would be too much blue but I'd like to see the one on left with a blue body.

江海关,Customs House, Shanghai(right)。
