La Cure Gourmande

...NO - this isn't what you all THINK! - nothing to do with New Year's Eve. THIS the 'Winter Cure'. :) Great Grandma Mines - a tough 'ol gal - homesteader in South Dakota. When the kids (of any age :) had 'the cough' or 'the croup' - hot water, lemon, honey...& a shot of Brandy. Big or small. (kid size or shot...)

It may not cure you, but it'll knock you out & relax your chest so you can get some sleep!

Not many doctors back then...or Nyquil. But probably always brandy.

(& if you're lucky enough to make it through a winter without

a cold - I find it works real good on the

'SHIT!itsjanuaryimnotgonnamakeitthroughanotherwinter' blues', too.)

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!!! xxx

Well, I knew that title would get your attention! This is Guaiacum officinale, or Lignum-vitae. Very hard and very dense (the source of ironwood), it was also thought in the 16th and 17th centuries to provide a cure for syphilis (as an infectious diseases doc, always a fascinating disease during my career). Maybe it could be used to club the treponemes to death, but it was found not to be medicinally useful. This specimen is in the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden in Arcadia, California. I have added links below to Wikipedia pages for your reading pleasure. I actually have a deskplate made of lignum vitae, made for me by a Cuban refugee when I was stationed in Guantanamo Bay in my early Navy career in the 1970s.

"A leper came to Jesus and pleaded on his knees: ‘If you want to’ he said ‘you can cure me.’ Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him. ‘Of course I want to!’ he said. ‘Be cured!’ And the leprosy left him at once and he was cured. Jesus immediately sent him away and sternly ordered him, ‘Mind you say nothing to anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your healing prescribed by Moses as evidence of your recovery.’ The man went away, but then started talking about it freely and telling the story everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer go openly into any town, but had to stay outside in places where nobody lived. Even so, people from all around would come to him."

All of a sudden, Leon showed signs of erectile dysfunction. He had none of the normal common causes such as heart disease, clogged blood vessels, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity or Parkinson's disease. Leon's doctor's were befuddled. Then, Leon met Ah Kum the Chinese Elm and, well, it's no longer a problem.

you say it's my fault

to need impossible cures

but i swear i've been happier before

lately i'm finding

that i need winding

and you say you can't fix

all the plates i've thrown

or keep your hands over

my broken bones

but i call you darling

i think that means something

don't know how long it takes

to heal this bad an ache

but i think it must

and that the time will come

and i bet that you'll love what i have become

you say it's my fault

to need impossible cures

but i swear i've been happier before

One more for the weekend....I think this one is kind of like how The Cure really is. You know, not just as an image but musically...a bit dark, a bit isolated...sort of an essence of separation from everything else. I think some probably see this band as strange but we're all a little abnormal, really.

Here's a picture of a lonesome imaginary boy. I'm sure if you love The Cure, you'll know just what I mean.

Oh, what a pleasure it's being crashed by the

power of thinking

the scents in the air can smell the events

but there's no way to touch anything now

I am fascinated by the smoke from this candle

Cure me, you know I would die for it,

I would die for it

I would die for it.

Cure me, you know I would die for it,

I would die for it

I would die for it.

Think I'm free from all the staff I always have to

bring with me

I swear it's a daily habit not a way to hide something

but still bad enough for me that I'm so blind

I won't take my eyes off the smoke from this candle.

Cure me, you know I would die for it,

I would die for it

I would die for it.

Cure me, you know I would die for it,

I would die for it

I would die for it.

Cure me I just need to be touched

by silence and noise

you cure me just with time

Cure me I just need to be touched

by silence and noise

you cure me just with time

cure me with no words but air, but air, but air

Cure me, you know I would die for it,

I would die for it

I would die for it.

Cure me, you know I would die for it,

I would die for it

I would die for it.

My dining corner: here, nothing has changed. I might buy a new table one day, a little bit more narrow, but this is not on the top of my priority list for the moment.

If you have followed my stream then you have seen the stories associated with these three photos. If not the links are below and here is a synopsis....2 of my 3 sons have Type 1 Diabetes. I recently asked them to describe in one word how this has touched their lives. We wrote those words on their hands and took the photo. I will be working to document this on many children with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, but in the meantime need to begin to raise money for the 2008 Walk to Cure Diabetes on October 19.

Last year, with the help of many friends and family we raised nearly $25,000 for the Walk, and we hope to do even better this year. If you are so inclined, please help by visiting our walk team web site listed below. If not, no worries....I will still admire your talent and love to see your photographic work!
