In 1993, bluesy alternative rock band Morphine sang about the lure of the needle in their song ‘Cure for Pain’. The band promised to throw all their drugs away when a cure for pain was found. Sadly, in 1999, while on stage in Rome the lead singer had a heart attack, presumably from hard living, and died.
While many of our personal situations in life probably don’t involve a rock star’s level of drugs, sex and rock ’n’ roll, there’s often some level of stress and frustration, and we all cope in different ways.
Well, this is my cure for pain.

Yeah, I know this is a familiar shot in an equally familiar location, but what can I say? I am a creature of habit....and I am hopelessly addicted to Tex-Mex cuisine. 😉
I remember watching Cure videos by accident at a pretty early age on MTV. It was my first exposure to a man wearing makeup and I was curious and confused. It wasn't until I turned 16 or 17 that I started buying all the records and by that time anyone I saw who wore a Cure shirt or listened to them was automatically brilliant in my head.
By the time I was 18, I had surrounded myself with only a handful of friends I liked so instead of having some huge graduation party from high school, I just had friends over as usual to listen to music and be emo (the real emo). The difference that time was that I took the time and energy to send Robert Smith personally an invitation. I sent it off to a fan mail address...not sure he got it but he never responded anyhow. He may have had to play to thousands of people on that day, anyhow, or look goth glam while buying milk at the corner store.
The Cure actually played Coachella on Robert Smith's birthday and they played so long that legend already is that they had to cut the sound because it went over and Robert Smith played acoustic versions of really old songs with a crowd huddled close. Of course, I was too busy furiously photo editing but I feel like I was there somehow just by hearing about it and it makes me feel good that Robert Smith brought the sky down on his birthday.
It's my 30th birthday, so now you know how old I am. I never thought I would get to photograph Robert Smith. I never thought I would get to photograph Radiohead or Leonard Cohen. I think sometimes when a person posts a great deal of concert photography, you may think she/he does it as a job. This isn't my job at all...it's just some surreal adventure I'm on that I'm quite scared about ending.
It's too bad Robert Smith and I couldn't enjoy a piece of cake together, us both being Tauri and all.

Leeches have been used in medicine for over 2,500 years. They were popular in earlier times because doctors thought that most diseases were caused by an excess of blood. As recently as the 19th century, leeches were used to treat everything from tonsillitis to hemorrhoids.
These are creepy little blood suckers. The cloth covers are there to keep them from getting out of the jars. It's happened before.....a dried up leech is not a pretty sight.
...NO - this isn't what you all THINK! - nothing to do with New Year's Eve. THIS the 'Winter Cure'. :) Great Grandma Mines - a tough 'ol gal - homesteader in South Dakota. When the kids (of any age :) had 'the cough' or 'the croup' - hot water, lemon, honey...& a shot of Brandy. Big or small. (kid size or shot...)
It may not cure you, but it'll knock you out & relax your chest so you can get some sleep!
Not many doctors back then...or Nyquil. But probably always brandy.
