The new starbucks cup design as its sitting in the snow.

Times like these, you just have to compromise. We had no electricity (again) for two days because of the storm and this was the only thing I could find in my cupboard that doesn't require any cooking.

Echinocereus triglochidiatus Engelmann in Wislizenus, 1848 - claret-cup cactus in Colorado, USA.

Plants are multicellular, photosynthesizing eucaryotes. Most species occupy terrestrial environments, but they also occur in freshwater and saltwater aquatic environments. The oldest known land plants in the fossil record are Ordovician to Silurian. Land plant body fossils are known in Silurian sedimentary rocks - they are small and simple plants (e.g., Cooksonia). Fossil root traces in paleosol horizons are known in the Ordovician. During the Devonian, the first trees and forests appeared. Earth's initial forestation event occurred during the Middle to Late Paleozoic. Earth's continents have been partly to mostly covered with forests ever since the Late Devonian. Occasional mass extinction events temporarily removed much of Earth's plant ecosystems - this occurred at the Permian-Triassic boundary (251 million years ago) and the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (65 million years ago).

The most conspicuous group of living plants is the angiosperms, the flowering plants. They first unambiguously appeared in the fossil record during the Cretaceous. They quickly dominated Earth's terrestrial ecosystems, and have dominated ever since. This domination was due to the evolutionary success of flowers, which are structures that greatly aid angiosperm reproduction.

The claret-cup cactus occurs in hot, rocky, desert settings of southwestern America & northern Mexico. When in bloom, the flowers are intensely scarlet, sitting atop stumpy, cylindrical, highly spinose stems. Like other cactuses, this plant lives in arid environments and has features that conserve water. The spiny, green, stumpy stems of cactuses are photosynthesizing. The leaves of cactus ancestors have been modified by evolution into spines.

Info. provided by Colorado National Monument:

"The claret cup's cylindrical stems are usually clustered together and often appear in a mound. Scarlet flowers can be seen blooming on this cactus in April and May. Unlike most cacti that are pollinated by bees and flies, claret cups are pollinated by hummingbirds."

-----------------------------

Classification: Plantae, Angiospermophyta, Caryophyllales, Cactaceae

Locality: outdoor desert plant display at Colorado National Monument's visitor center, southwest of the town of Grand Junction, west-central Mesa County, far-western Colorado, USA

The first cup moistens my lips and throat;

The second cup breaks my loneliness;

The third cup searches my barren entrail but to find therein some thousand volumes of odd ideographs;

The fourth cup raises a slight perspiration-all the wrongs of life pass out through my pores;

At the fifth cup I am purified;

The sixth cup calls me to the realms of the immortals.

The seventh cup-ah, but I could take no more! I only feel the breath of the cool wind that raises in my sleeves.

Where is Elysium? Let me ride on this sweet breeze and waft away thither.

Got leftover filling for those delicious tamales you made last night, but feeling too lazy for dealing in leaves? Pull out the ramekins and/or muffin tins and make some cup tamales!

More tea cups! I just cant get enough.

The Glendale Tea-estate started a new tea-lounge in Ooty. It is settled in a nice tent where they serve different kinds of tea. In glass cups or in these big ones.

I was more than thrilled to find this at the thrift store the other day. It just makes me smile to look at it!

This solid gold cup with a spool handle - from the grave of the Griffin Warrior at Pylos - which may be hollow, lacks a lining. On the midrib is a frieze of retorted spirals in notably high relief. It was crushed by the weight of a bronze basin and by pressure from earth fallen into the grave shaft after the collapse of a stone cover slab.

In the Aegean, the name Keftiu (the Egyptian name for Crete) has long been applied to cups of this shape, in both metal and clay, because "men from Keftiu" carry them in Egyptian wall paintings (see Davis, p. 91, fig. 32). This cup uniquely resembles a metal vessel depicted in one Theban painting, where it is carried in procession in the tomb of Senenmut, steward of Amun and architect of Queen Hatshepsut. The Pylos example also begs comparison with the two famous gold "Vapheio" cups from a tomb excavated by Christos Tsountas near Sparta in 1889 (see Davis, p. 26, fig. 2, and an example from Peristeria, cat. 132).
