Ray Cuff's KDB 696

Former North Western Road Car Leyland Tiger Cub / Weymann

Sadly, Ray passed away in 2022. Here he is heading for Yeovil sometime in 1975, but I have no idea where.

bracelets in wave and curve shape

This beautiful elegant cuff was created around a lovely large oval turquoise glass speckled with touches of white and grey cabochon, two Swarovski crystal fuchsia Rivoli, eight fuchsia Swarovski crystal beads and two beautiful pear-shaped vintage cut glass cabochons. The cuff was bead embroidered with turquoise and silver Duracoat seed beads.

The back of the embroidered cuff is lined with turquoise Ultrasuede. The cuff fastens with a silver-plated magnetic clasp.

The cuff measures 8” (c. 20.5 cm) and is c. 2 5/8” (c. 6.5 cm) at the widest point and 1 ¾” (c. 4.5 cm) at the narrowest point near the magnetic clasp.

This guy was auctioned off for $167. That means that he took 167 lashes! At least a quarter of those were hard cracks, too! I can't even imagine how he made it through those; he must'a went to his "special place." *wink*

This elegant cuff was created around a bead-embroidered centrepiece, using a white Quartz cabochon, Czech pale opal blue fire-polished glass beads, teal Swarovski crystals, Czech gold seed beads, gold glass pearls and teal silver-lined Japanese seed beads. The bead-embroidery sits on a beautiful gold and teal peyote stitched cuff. The peyote band covers a blank brass cuff base which is lined with dark turquoise/teal ultrasuede. The cuff fits all sizes. The cuff is c. 1 ¼” (c. 3.5 cm) wide. The centrepiece measures 2 ½” (c. 6.3 cm) by 3” (c. 7.5 cm).

Made in 2005, here's a cuff bracelet from my ‘transparency' series, one of several pieces I made for an ‘artist-of-the-month spotlight' in a fine craft gallery in Vancouver that same year. At the time I was really into Josef Alber’s book Interaction of Colour and his influence in the overlapping colour is apparent. But so much of what defined the design aesthetic of this series had nothing to do with Albers and more to do with life living on Canada’s rugged West Coast. These other influences were much more present and much more personal: the muted natural palette, the pentaradial geometry inspired by sand dollars and sea urchins, the loose organic shapes inspired by the beach pebbles found only a stone's throw (ahem) from our house, and the use of polymer ‘grains’ inspired by Tracy's innovative imitative pebble techniques that were also very prevalent in our studio during that time. I miss that coastal landscape.

Many of the techniques used in this bracelet are now a part of my Five Star Beads workshop. If you want to see some companion pieces from this series, you can find them on flickr, starting here:

with glass frosted light green beads, my purchase from Sunyno.etsy.com

This gorgeous sparkly-chunky cuff was bead-embroidered and embellished using Japanese and Czech seed beads, Czech firepolish glass beads, Swarovski pearls and fresh-water pearls, in bronzes, greys and dark purple, embroidered around Swarovski crystal volcano flatbacks . The base is a blank brass cuff. The inside is lined with magenta ultrasuede. The cuff fits all sizes, is c. 2” (c. 5 cm) wide and is one-of-a-kind!!!

I love the colour combination here...really enjoyed putting them together :)

Custom iron cuff made out of a blind blocker. A thing that is meant to block the blinds in open position. You can spot them at the bottom of the picture. It is ornamented with silver rivets.
