Crossbones Cemetery, Redcross Way, Southwark.

A cemetery for prostitutes licensed (pimped) by the Bishops of Winchester Palace in Southwark. When they died, after years of paying their dues to the church from their work, they were buried in this unconsecrated ground by the bishops. Later it became a burial ground for paupers, still unconscrated. It is believed that there are 15,000 people, men women and children buried here.

Since Talk Like A Pirate Day is in two days, I figured it would be a good time to upload this one. ;)

The charm is made from silver-toned metal cube letter beads, a pewter Jolly Roger flag charm with skull and crossbones, two round red glass beads, and red and black enameled copper wire (this makes the cell phone charm stiff).

At the end is a black cell phone strap, allowing it to be connected to a phone, Nintendo DS, or any kind of mobile or electronic device with a spot to hang a charm.

The entire charm is about 5 1/4" (13.3 cm) long from end of the cell phone strap to bottom of the flag, but the beaded and flag part itself is about 2 3/4" (7 cm) long. The strap and metal bit under it is about 2 1/2" (6.4 cm) long and just the strap is 2" (5.1 cm) long.

The east wall has diagonal buttresses and a three-light window. Along the top is a parapet, in the centre of which is a sundial. This is inscribed with the words "We shall", and skulls and crossbones; on its summit are hourglasses. At the ends of the parapet are urn finials.

All Saints' church is all that remains of the medieval village of Kedleston, razed in 1759 by Sir Nathaniel Curzon to make way for the magnificent Kedleston Hall.

Today, the hall is a beautiful National Trust property and you can easily combine a trip to both attractions at once. The Curzon family has lived at Kedleston for 700 years and their stunning memorials - created by several famous designers including Robert Adam - fill the church. The grandest was erected in 1909, commissioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, for his wife Mary. A dazzling marble tomb -- with lifesize figures and watching angels -- floats on a sea of green translucent quartz in its own little chapel with superb stained glass windows.

Another monument from 1456 shows Sir John Curzon in full armour with his wife and their two dogs. Essentially thirteenth century, with a classical east end, All Saints is filled with fine fittings including oak box pews, pulpit and communion rails. However, its oldest feature is the Norman south doorway, which has zigzag moulding and grotesque bird heads.

Look out for the carving of the fiendish little cares of horseman and wild beasts that glare out at you just above the door!

Exterior

The church is constructed in sandstone with Welsh slate roofs. Its plan is cruciform, with a central tower over a crossing, a nave with a north chapel, north and south transepts, a chancel with a clerestory, and a north vestry. The south doorway is Norman in style, having a round-headed arch decorated with a zigzag pattern, enclosing a tympanum with weathered carvings of beasts. To the right of the doorway are two two-light windows with flat arches. Each transept is buttressed and has a window consisting of three stepped lancets. In the south wall of the chancel is a priest's door, with a lancet window on the left, and a two-light window under a flat arch to the right. In the clerestory are two-light windows in both the south and the north walls. The east wall has diagonal buttresses and a three-light window. Along the top is a parapet, in the centre of which is a sundial. This is inscribed with the words "We shall", and skulls and crossbones; on its summit are hourglasses. At the ends of the parapet are urn finials. In the north wall of the chancel is a two-light window, and the north wall of the vestry has two paired lancet windows. The chapel has three bays separated by buttresses. In each bay is a three-light window under which are three trefoils acting as ventilators. Along the parapet is the inscription "QUIA MULTUM AMAVIT". The west wall has diagonal buttresses and a three-light window. Above this is a lancet window in the gable. The tower is in two stages. In the lower stage are two lancet windows, and in the upper stage are two-light bell openings on each side. The summit has a battlemented parapet, with crocketted pinnacles at the corners.

They say that catholics enjoy life to the fullest. But obviously they also enjoy presenting death in a very material way. I never saw any protestant church or graveyard with so many skulls and crossbones like in this little area of Neuzelle monastry. Wherever you look, a death-head smiles at you.

Gravestone in Lamington Church. The skull and crossbones were fairly common in the 17th and early 18th centuries apparently. There were quite a few in this old churchyard.Big set of gnashers on him, hasn`t he ?

Situated in the grave yard at Girthon old Kirk

The old parish church of Girthon occupies a site dating back at least to the 13th century. The existing building was mostly reconstructed around 1625, but parts of the east gable and the eastern end of the south wall are of pre-Reformation date; there is a piscina of probably 16th century date in the south wall.

This necklace is big and bold and ready to make a statement!

The cameo is accented with a tiny cabochon for just the right amount of sparkle!

This skull and crossbones 30X40mm cameo is on an antiqued silver plated setting. It's perfect for the summer, it's perfect for anytime! The size of the actual pendant is about 2"x1.75" (5cmx4.5cm). The pendant hangs from a silver plated chain that is about 18" (46cm) long and closes with a spring clasp.

I have recently started to really like the whole skull and crossbones fad. So, I decided to make a cuff to help me get my skull and crossbones fix.
