A garden in the making: an estimated 15,000 people, mostly prostitutes and poor people, are buried in a small patch of land a stone's throw from London Bridge. Not so long ago, Transport for London wanted to get its hands on the plot; now it's becoming a quirky green space to enjoy and remember. On the railings facing the street, people have put up ribbons and home-made votives to remember those long dead, and friends and relatives lost more recently too.
Mel went shopping at the local market and came back with a cute vintage donkey, one of those that fall down when you push the bottom up. It came in a cute skully bag.
So off with the boots and on the couch to play.

Yeah, that title is chock-full of poorly constructed puns. Sorry about that. (Not sorry enough to go back and change the title, however. You probably noticed that.)

This necklace is big and bold and ready to make a statement!
The cameo is accented with a tiny cabochon for just the right amount of sparkle!
This skull and crossbones 30X40mm cameo is on an antiqued silver plated setting. It's perfect for the summer, it's perfect for anytime! The size of the actual pendant is about 2"x1.75" (5cmx4.5cm). The pendant hangs from a silver plated chain that is about 18" (46cm) long and closes with a spring clasp.
Lovingly made by the Dame in her smoke-free, pet-friendly studio in Ottawa, Canada
Actual skulls and bones were long used to mark the entrances to cemeteries. The practice, dating back many centuries, led to the symbol eventually becoming associated with the concept of death. Some crucifixes feature a skull and crossbones beneath the corpus (the depiction of Jesus' body), in reference to a legend that the place of the crucifixion was also the burial place of Adam or, more likely, in reference to the New Testament statement (King James Version: Matthew 27:33, Mark 15:22, and John 19:17) that the place of his crucifixion was called "Golgotha" (tr. "the Place of a Skull"). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skull_and_crossbones_
I was walking through the room while my children were watching the new Princess and the Frog movie for the first time, and the ubervillian, Dr. Facilier, was on the screen. Well, when I saw his hat, I knew that I would have to try and make it.
My interpretation of the Jolly Roger, skull and crossbones, concept using a collage of photographs taken by me. The smoke trails have been manipulated in photoshop to create bone like structures and this is one of a series of similar images available in just about any colour or combination of colours that you can imagine. If you do not see the colour that you require please contact me via the website customer care e-mail.
Heather loves both Christmas and skull-and-crossbones things, so what better to make her for her birthday than a skully tree ornament! I drew an outline on white felt, then pinned two pieces together and cut out the shape. I then stitched around the outline of the crossbones with green embroidery floss, stopping at one point to put in a bit of poly-fill. After the crossbones were done, I unpinned the pieces to stitch on the face, which only appears on the front. I pinned the pieces back together and stitched the skull part together with red embroidery floss, stuffed in more poly-fill, and added a loop for hanging!
This was for my best friend's birthday. She wanted Skull & Crossbones so viola! Skull and Crossbones!
The cakes is strawberry, with vanilla frosting that was tinted pink for the edges. Black gel was used for the face of the skull.
Today a friend introduced me to a very interesting thing which I had never heard of before.
The Cross Bones Graveyard is the site of an unconsecrated burial ground in the heart of London. Formed as a burial ground for 'sinful' members of the Parish, this was the final resting place for thousands and thousands of the area's prostitutes, and their unwanted newborns.
Over the years the graveyard became a catch all for any pauper, or person deemed unworthy of a Christian burial by the church. This continued until the 1850s where authorities ceased using the area as an active burial ground, there was simply no room left.
After the area was disturbed by excavations in the building of an extention to one of London underground's tube lines, archaeologists removed all human remains from the site.
Since this happened, all that is on the site is a waste land. However, the gates that guard entry from the nearest road have become a place where people go to leave tokens, candles, flowers, toys, cards, pictures, poems, ribbons, wishes and tributes to the people who were buried on this site. It is estimated 15,000 bodies were buried here.
It was a uniquely interesting and emotionally effecting place, and I spent a long time exploring, photographing, and thinking about all the history of this site.
