It doesn't show up very well in the winter, but there is a path worn through our ground cover, down the hill next to the stairs. It has been made by a critter, most likely an opposum. There is a path all along the north side of our house; through the ivy, behind the hostas, and down the hill. This is from the opposum's point of view.

I currently have three of these ladies living in my back yard. I nearly walked straight through one of their webs the other night when I took the trash out! Luckily I stopped just in time!!!
I shouldn't have told the kids about them though as they have started refusing to go outback at night since...

No idea what this beastie was, but (s)he was sitting on my front door this morning. I'm well impressed by the detail the lens has picked out on the compound eye. I really like the iridescent metallic green too.
Edit: ID'ed in the Springwatch group as Oedemera nobilis — there's no common name. It also turns out to be a male — girlie Oedemera nobilises don't have the thunderthighs.

This rattle snake was right on the side of the road near the El Malpais, NM So of course I had to get out and take some shots!
This log was inside the Tuzigoot National Monument. I thought the tracks from insects was interesting.
