There are Five critters carved on this piece too. In this view you can see a sphinx moth and the head of a snake. The critters were carved with a burning pen, and the leaves were carved with rotating cutters (dremel like tool). The leaves were then lightly stained to obtain the different hues.

Sculptor Jeff Briggs designed and fabricated the critters and artist William Rogers painted them. It is a fairly small carousel - three abreast with the outer two rows moving up and down. The 14 critters include: Grasshopper, squirrel, rabbit, fox, skunk, butterflies, falcon, barn owl, lobster, sea turtle, cod, seal, serpent and whale. The ride has a totl of 36 seats. Price in 2013 was $3 per ride. These images may be re-used commercially with attribution credit to: At-Hand Guides.

The other night I found this yellow 44-Tonner sans-trucks on a flatbed near the BNSF yard in Burlington. A couple days later, a crane lifted her onto her trucks, and another little critter magically appeared. I want to say it's a Whitcomb but I have literally no idea. At any rate, neat little things!
Don't know what he is, but he was fun to chase round yesterday. Fast little thing with a very long tail and a sweet face. Saw another one today, larger in fact, with more red around the face. I think they're ace.
