Our Shipmate in the Spotlight for this edition is LCDR Abigail Lupena. LCDR Lupena graduated from the University of Nevada School of Dental Medicine, she completed her Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency at the University of Mississippi. It was in Jackson, Mississippi during her AEGD training that she met her husband, a Navy oral surgery resident. After a year in private practice, she joined the Navy through direct accession.

She completed her credentialing tour at 2nd Dental Battalion, Camp Lejeune and successfully achieved her Fleet Marine Force Warfare Qualification. LCDR Lupena was then stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, where she undertook the role as the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Officer for the Western Pacific Region. This role, coupled with lessons from Joint Professional Military Education Phase I, offered her a profound perspective on the unique stresses and sacrifices faced by deployed personnel in service to national defense.

LCDR Lupena is currently stationed at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, where she continues to support the Navy’s mission and expand her clinical skills. Last year, she was selected as an alternate for DUINS in Endodontics. She is working towards her Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal through her participation in San Diego food assistance programs that support military families.

Fun Facts

Hometown: Dayton, NV

Dental School: University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Dental Medicine

Favorite thing about being a Navy Dental Corps Officer: I enjoy the Navy’s group practice environment which fosters collaboration, the work-life balance it offers for my family, and the personal satisfaction of serving warfighters.

Hobbies: I spend most of my free time caring for my 5-year-old son, Jackson, and my 2-year-old daughter, Jenny. Once they’re asleep, I enjoy unwinding by watching food and baking videos and scrolling through the photos I’ve taken of the kids.

Something that most people don't know about you: I’ve always loved having long hair, and for a while, it was so long it reached the back of my knees. But it wasn’t exactly ideal for my daily bun, so I decided to cut off 27 inches and donate it to Wigs for Kids.

We live in a dynamic world. The healthcare industry is evolving too. The regulations change every year, and providers need to stay updated with the current coding guidelines to stay on top of their game.

Ideally, medical coding should be a top priority for healthcare organizations irrespective of size and specialty. However, medical coding services sometimes take a back seat putting the spotlight on other responsibilities. Healthcare providers can outsource medical billing and coding services to a reliable and trusted partner like us.
