Vay Welch
Every day, Vay negotiates mounds of paperwork to keep all of the members of the Vanderbilt Mental Health Center properly credentialed. She’s the type of person who works quietly until the job is done, without much commotion or complaint. This is the attitude with which she approached this photo session. At the time, she was recovering from a broken leg and was on crutches. Yet she tolerated 3 setting changes and got it all in under an hour. Vay is an administrative assistant for the Vanderbilt Department of Psychiatry. She appears in Fortification.

In the mid 1990's, defibrillation was added as an extra module for EMT's certified within the state. The education was provided by the local MICU projects and upon successful completion of the course each distributed their own small patch or rocker to add above the EMT patch. When defibrillation was introduced as part of CPR training, it was incorporated into the EMT-Basic curriculum. The additional credentialing was ultimately removed.
