Matt DesLauriers, an artist and freelance creative coder, talks about his passion for generative art — searching for inspiration, exploring open tools and workflows, and finding his own path within the field. Learn about conceptual art, pen plotters, light installations, and how print artworks can be created with JavaScript and the web platform. Matt breaks down some of the algorithms and processes involved in his work, providing you with the building blocks to create your own generative art.

This is a screenshot from a simplistic/abstract subway simulation app/animation I created using javascript in HTML5.
In the app, the scene is moving right to left as you travel through the tunnel. The green light indicates that there is no subway directly ahead to worry about. But if you go too fast then other signal lights ahead will show yellow to slow down or red if a subway is too close.
I wanted to try to create a simple world with just javascript as an experiment, but I wanted that world to resonate with me. You see, as a kid especially, I liked riding in the subway. The green station is green because that is the colour of Toronto's St. George subway station. This was the station closest to my grandparent's house in the Annex before the extension north to Dupont and farther was built.
You can see the running app by visiting the following link:

You can see another more abstract subway experiment with sound by visiting the following link:

Some of the sounds used were excerpts from the following: Freesound.org - “Toronto Subway - Wellesley to Osgoode” by lonemonk, and Freesound.org - “Subway NY inside speaker door o-c” by beman87
