A Narthex or Porch wraps round the front of the basilica in a style that is common to eastern churches.
On the South Cupola in the West Narthex is the story of Creation from the Book of Genesis. The mosaic is dated to around 1215-35.
The story told on these rather Romanesque mosaics is quite detailed; more so than in most churches/cathedrals. In the innermost circle God brings the universe into existence, including Light and Darkness.
The next circle depicts the creation of life, the fishes in the sea and land animals, as well as the Creation of Man, witnessed by angels.
On the outermost circle is story of Adam and Eve, the Tree of Knowledge and their banishment from the Garden of Eden.

The creation of new land as the 2000 degree lava meets the dazzling blue waters of the Pacific. The boat along the shore line gives you some perspective on how high up I am. Also gives you some idea of how much lava flows into the ocean.
