A marble surface created an interesting abstract reflection of this crawler vine growing on a railing.

We first saw these beautiful large flying Neuroptera or Black Lacewing in 2008. They fly in January and we have seen an occasional one in many different locations over many years since.
It is always exciting to see them.

"The Stilbopteryx is "Stilbopteryx napoleo (Lefèbvre, 1842)".
This species is strongly sexually dimorphic -- the male has the two prominent humps dorsally at the base of the abdomen, while the female does not."

Out chasing storms in northeast Colorado and saw some amazing crawlers that looked like they were coming off of a tower going up into the sky. During the dissipation of a severe thunderstorm, many discharges of lightning that never appear to make it to the ground will appear to cling to the base of a cloud. Looking up at the cloud base, an anvil crawler will look like fingers of lightning underneath the clouds.

Lake State Railway's train 327 rolls into Alpena after sunset behind newly-rebuilt slug set #303 and #4303. The train consists entirely of cement and fly ash hoppers for the Lafarge plant in town. The line from Tawas City to Alpena was still all 10 mph at the time, making for a slow and boring trip for this single-person crew. In recent years, LSRC has poured a ton of money into the former D&M in the form of ties, ballast and continuous welded rail. It is expected the entire line will be up to at least 25 mph (and planned for higher) quite soon.
This was pushing the limits of my 70D's low-light capabilities, with most of the usable light gone. I think it cleaned up decent enough.
Despite its appearance, it carries very little load.

Follow me on instagram and Facebook i will love you forever. instagram.com/quintingellar www.facebook.com/qgphotos this car has been parked on a sandlot next to our house for im guessing the past 2 years, its always parked up right against a wall and no one drives it, i always wanted to take a photo of it but didn't bother because it was in a crappy location, last night i walked to the shop to buy some pringles and i saw the owner pulled it up to the side of the road, thought i would take a photo before he puts it back on the sandlot.
the city sleeps, but the city's hunger does not. deep in the underpass, where the sun never reaches, the silent work continues. a machine, painted a defiant orange, moves through the artificial night. it is a night crawler, a beast of burden feeding on the leftovers of the day, keeping the great organism clean. its headlights are the only eyes in the long, iron-ribbed tunnel. by morning, it will be gone, its work invisible. only the hum of its engine echoes for a moment, then silence.
This brilliant flash was also recorded in Slow Motion using my GoPro 10. Hopefully, I uploaded some in slow motion: www.flickr.com/photos/79387036@N07/52256821316..
Rolling along at an easy ten miles per hour, Portland & Western's McMinnville Hauler heads west at Cipole, Oregon. The train is running through Portland's southwest suburbs on the former Southern Pacific Newberg Branch.
When this photo was taken in February 1997, the pulp mill at Newberg was still operating. It provided a decent amount of traffic for the Hauler. To the west of this location, the former Red Electric interurban line crossed Rex Hill on several fabulous timber trestles.
Eventually, the amount of work needed on the bridges to keep the line in service could not be justified. After sporadic closures due to the deteriorating conditions of the trestles, in 2008 the route between Sherwood and Newberg was taken out of service indefinitely. In 2015, the pulp mill in Newberg was permanenty closed.
Today, a lone shipper near the site of this image that receives an occasional railcar. Aside from those few moves, the line is inactive, and likely to remain so indefinitely.
