Remarks/comments:

Funny story about this kite: there was a huge open field just yards away from where a father and son were flying it, but they seemed determined to stay next to the playground by the trees. And then, Crash! They proceeded to take turns climbing the tree to try and retrieve it. They finally succeeded, though the dad's ego seemed a bit bruised by the end of it all.

Bad start to the Easter Weekend for someone. Crash in the Symonds St/Newton Rd Intersection Thursday night

About 20m AGL Val lost control of her landing approach and over-corrected into a slew that spun the aircraft nearly 180 degrees, where it nosed under and struck the ground on the top of its nose before sliding on its back, the wing catching the side of the runway and spinning it 90 degrees to its final resting position.

The aircraft is overall intact because it was built extremely heavy and tolerant in the event of a crash to protect the pilot. Also, the slew most likely shed a good deal of velocity prior to impact. We'll know more once the crash investigation completes

Crash test is somewhat exaggerated, because nothing is destroyed. It's more of an impact test for people, to have an experience of the forces that appear already at a speed of 13 km/h (8 mph). Swiss Museum of Transport in Luzern, Mar 12, 2010.

I got there about 10 mins after it happened, the fire was out & everyone was out of the cars.. (firehouse is about 200 yards from the crash scene)

When I'm in a car, it's hard to take pictures of crashes.. but today I was on my bicycle - safely on the sidewalk and unlikely to cause another crash while snapping photos.

SB-800 @ 1/8 fired into white board camera left

Triggered via Commlite T320

In the freezing dark of the early hours of 14 March 1951, Avro Lancaster TX264, D for Delta, struck here at 180mph, just 20ft or so below the summit of Coinneach Mhor, jamming itself firmly into the top of the right-hand gully that splits the face of Triple Buttress. The gully is known to climbers these days as ‘Fuselage Gully’.

They were perhaps unlucky, to have missed clearing the top of the mountain by so little, but the fact is that in the dark and the snow and the cloud, had they just missed the top they would have been unlikely to have known it, and would simply have continued descending towards the same inevitable fate on the next peak.

It would at least seem reasonably probable that all eight occupants died instantly!

On 4 December 1944, the RNZAF Ventura 4550 crashed while attempting to land at Funafuti Airfield, Tuvalu (formerly known as the Ellice Islands). All five of the crew were killed.

The Ventura 4550 and its crew had been out on patrol and had returned to the airfield with its depth charges still on board. As the plane came in to land, it was noticed by ground crew to be coming in too fast. The plane hit the runway, bounced, and then bounced a second time and swerved dangerously towards the 70-foot tall palm trees to the left of the runway. Hoping to climb over the trees, the pilot gunned the engines. But it was too late – the plane smashed into the trees at around 35 feet, tore apart, and flipped upside down in a fireball of flame.

A US Navy radioman on the ground, Thorsten Lundquist, was in the nearby mess hall when he heard the roar of the engines and the plane striking the trees. Rushing to the scene, he attempted to open what doors were not already engulfed in flames, but they were jammed. Hearing screams, he worked frantically to find an entry, crawling on his stomach to get underneath the upside down fuselage. But the flames were too strong. Running for cover, Lundquist was knocked over as the depth charges exploded, totally destroying what remained of the wreckage.

The official inquiry, which included this photograph of the Ventura's path and crash site as evidence, concluded that the inexperience of the pilot, combined with a 7 knot cross-wind, was the cause. Although the pilot had clocked up sufficient flight hours, it was his first ever attempt at landing at Funafuti and had failed to properly brake his glide on the final part of the approach.
