Stay Warm!

Materials:

-fleece

-felt

-pinto beans

-liquid stitch

-stitch witchery

Inspired by my all-time favorite Scandinavian design - the Cathrineholm Lotus pattern by Grete Prytz. I'm an unabashed collector and devotee, and it was really fun to craft up something that already brings me so much joy - and matches lots of little pieces here and there throughout my house!

The sewing machine is broken for the nth time, so I used up some leftover Stitch Witchery and Liquid Stitch to do the seams and applique.

All Saints Church (1901-1902, W.R.Lethaby), Brockhampton-by-Ross, Herefordshire, Photograph by James Russiello, August 27, 2010

"All Saints Church is a most unusual church, arguably one of the most important buildings of the 20th century. It was designed by William Richard Lethaby (1857-1931), who was variously Principal of the Central School of Arts and Crafts, Professor of Design at the Royal College of Art, and a Surveyor to the fabric of Westminster Abbey, for Mrs Alice Madeline Foster, of Brockhampton Court; and was built for her in 1901-2, as a memorial to her parents, Eben D and Julia Jordon, of Boston, Massachusetts."

"One of the most famous Arts & Crafts churches in England, All Saints at Brockhampton by Ross is a unique building and a real treat. This was a church I'd been longing to visit for some time and didn't disappoint!

"The church was built in 1901-2 to the designs of W.R.Lethaby, a follower of Morris's principles of paying homage to the past by evoking its atmosphere without actually copying it, which is something this church does immensely successfully, the design being highly original; The details (particularly the delightfully eccentric traceried windows) all Lethaby's own invention, and yet somehow the feel of an ancient village church, is retained , in its carefully considered proportions, materials and cruciform plan.

"The first aspect one notices is that the church has two towers, extremely unusual for an English parish church, with a timber pyramid-capped belfry over the south porch and a more solidly built square lantern tower over the crossing, a low cube pierced by some wonderfully unorthodox windows. The steeply pitched roofs are finished with thatch which contrasts nicely with the red sandstone walls, which are generally low in height except four the four main facades with their gables.

"The steep roof and low walls create the unusual proportions of the interior, which seems like a tunnel composed of pointed, almost triangular arches, and flooded with light, thanks to much clear glazing and a white rendered wall finish. The furnishings are contemporary with the building, and are either designed by the architect or the work of other prominent members of the Arts & Crafts Movement, with Morris & Co tapestries (to designs by Burne Jones) flanking the altar and stained glass by Christopher Whall in the three principal windows.

"This is a real gem of a church, one that won't easily be forgotten. Like most in Herefordshire it is generally kept open for visitors (I had a long and tantalising wait here for a wedding to finish, but it was well worth it!)."

When we were shopping for a condo, we saw one with a corner desk in the spare bedroom, and Mom went on and on about how great that desk was, and how much she would like to have one like it for her crafts. Check!

The Good Catch Motherlode Craft Fair

Toronto, ON

here's to WHITE in both cases.

i have deleted myself from facebook and twitter and i literally can't explain how good it is, its like i suddenly have all this time? weird. email is really personal and nice and meaningful for some reason in comparison.

This week's reading for my MA was The Craftsman by Richard Sennett. Been working on my thoughts about it (his thesis is that 'a job done well for its own sake' is really central to the human spirit - thinking about my current brainstatus, and reading a lot about 'email apnea' and 'continuous partial attention' - both coined by this social anthropologist Linda Stone - which seem to be the symptoms in place of getting 'good' at something, and instead just using the internet. I certainly know some people who can be productive infront of a computer, but i'm not ever going to be one of them.

Also, sorry this has turned into a bit of a daily booth, when i remember to take my camera out with me, that will stop.

I thought this could be a fun, simple project for people... I traced the various contents of these supply drawers, filled in the silhouettes, and added the lettering with rubber stamps.
