It's that time of the year again and these Black-tailed godwits started their courtship dances and flights - not that easy with these long legs and bills! You can easily come up with some accompanying music.

Courtship pose. Unfortunately this year with the high water and windy conditions all their nest were destroyed this spring. Isle Lake Alberta
The mute swan is a very large white waterbird. It has a long S-shaped neck and an orange bill with a black base and a black knob. It flies with its neck extended and regular, slow wingbeats.
The population in the UK has increased recently, perhaps due to better protection of this species. The problem of lead poisoning on lowland rivers has also largely been solved by a ban on the sale of lead fishing weights. Some birds stay in their territories all year, while others move short distances and form winter flocks. In cold weather, some birds arrive from Europe into eastern England. What they eat: Water plants, insects and snails.

I found these two black swans near the shoreline of Lake Morton in Lakeland, Florida. They were interacting in a fashion that I took as a courtship ritual, though I am not certain.
Never tire of watching Hoodies court. I believe they fill their neck with air to enlarge it and stretched it out. In any event they are amazing contortionists.

"Whether stepping singly across a wet meadow or filling the sky by the hundreds and thousands, Sandhill Cranes have an elegance that draws attention. These tall, gray-bodied, crimson-capped birds breed in open wetlands, fields, and prairies across North America. They group together in great numbers, filling the air with distinctive rolling cries. Mates display to each other with exuberant dances that retain a gangly grace. Sandhill Crane populations are generally strong, but isolated populations in Mississippi and Cuba are endangered."

Least terns have a courting ritual where the male brings the female small fish. It's really fun watching the male return from the ocean with the fish and the female calling out to them as they find each other and the male delivers the catch.
The mating rituals have started! This male is showing his best display of plumage saying "pick me....pick me"!
Male Hooded Merganser shows off his best stuff as he tries to impress the lady. As he rears back, he gets off a kindof vibrating "froglike croak". They were a little less predictable this season than last - I think I only got one really good session with this behavior, on a cold overcast morning. What a kick to watch them, and how lucky am I.
I just finished my new gallery. Please check it out: www.briangengephotography.com/Nature/Maine-2017/
Finally made it to the coast, nice to see the coastal birds again. Courting Avocets sequence, start to finish.
I was lucky enough to find a number of Wood Whites yesterday. Not only that I managed to capture a couple of shots of their courtship behaviour. This is something I haven't seen before so that was very pleasing to see.
