saturday 20th february;

today, i pretty much panicked. my coursework for college (which has to be in on monday) and we only had a week to do it (half-fucking-term) is basically a bunch of shit.

i started, and i mean only just started at 3pm this afternoon after getting up at one. basically i have to pretend i have been commissioned by BBC1 to write a drama/comedy script to fill a 5 minute slot. i have chosen to do it in the post-watershed slot which will be easier. i have to examine that time slot, the genre's and identify the audience so my script will be suitable. seems easy enough right?

i have to write a journal, including;

- ideas for my script (genre, story ideas, character profiles, location profiles)

- research (for content; primary sources, secondary sources, printed material, internet sites, video and audio recordings, interviews, research for the market; current practice, production guides, published writers advice, audience profiles)

- notes (meetings, note-taking, mind mapping)

i then have to write up my final ideas as a treatment. which has to be 1-2 pages.

when monday comes, i have to be recorded on camera as i present my idea and script as a pitch in front of my tutor and class. this all seems fairy easy with the right help and understanding but because i (personally) didn't get enough help/advice at college i am now struggling along with the fact i can't think of anything. woo!

i was thinking of doing a mix up between maybe skins and outnumbered (if anyone has ever heard of them). -sigh-

Brief: Research 20 different art movements from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and then use the information to create a timeline of art and graphic design over that time period aimed at young people. Final outcome to consist of 4 A5 or A4 pages rather than the whole timeline.

We had recently studied David Carson and the layouts he designed so I used his style as my inspiration. As the brief featured time and history, I decided to create the timeline with a Steampunk theme.

I focused on 3 art movements, one from each century, and the front cover. The final piece was printed on a sheet of A3 and folded into quarters but as the actual file has half the image upside down, I amended it to a strip so it was easier to see it all.

This was an alternate version to the Steampunk one that I designed first. I wanted to do something that was more brightly coloured which I thought would appeal to young people. The design also featured a transparent cover which can't be shown accurately here; the first section with the 'Time Line' title is the transparent cover which would overlay the name page in the second section.

Poster design I made for a design course in CMU. It abstractly charts my academic different interests from high school to grad school, and how I became interested in HCI.

Brief: design a leaflet to promote a college Art & Design department.

This is one of my preliminary sketches to work out the final design of the leaflet. I used names of artists, designers, architects, fashion designers, graphic designers, etc and tried to pick a suitable typeface for their name. The idea is that by taking an art & design course at the college, your name will become as recognised as these others are.

2009 art coursework on parents living vicariously through their children. Polymer clay, chalk pastel, readymades.

The title of the piece in the images is PG: Playing God.

Artist Statement: Encased in a closely monitored environment, children lead a life padded with the safe assurances of parental choices. However, such care has the danger of morphing into an overbearing compulsiveness in ensuring a stable future for the child; what parents see as the profession of success could also be an embodiment of their own faded dreams, and hence they live vicariously through their children. Yet, the meticulous efforts in paving their youngsters' livelihood may not go as planned; the gulf of understanding between adult practicality and childish ignorance is indissoluble, and children, being immersed in innocence, fail to appreciate those preparations for the purposes they harbour.

I began this project by thinking of a theme which was architecture, because of my lack of knowledge of architecture I decided to make it abstract architecture, allowing me to make the work more personal and versatile. I used many research methods which included viewing various books and online resources I felt that the internet helped the most because it gave me a broad idea of what architecture is like. As well as this I also viewed buildings around London and this showed many different styles of architecture which I could compare to styles that I viewed on the internet. From my visits I took pictures to document first hand research and created studies from them. The artists that had an influence on my work a lot was Brendan Neiland, Gregory Lang and Kurt Schwitters. I took vast amount of ideas and themes from their work and reproduced it differently into mine to create my final piece. Natural forms and organic shapes were another big influence into my work and because I wanted to make my final piece incorporate more sense than usual I added texture into my work, were there was brinks I used sand to give a feel to the artwork. The colours were influenced by Kurt Schwitters, artwork Das Undbild which has earthly colours. For my final piece I used a similar colour scheme by incorporating the orange and blue divide however making it more vibrant. The orange and blue represent different ends of the colour spectrum and I intended for them to represent different tastes in architecture which people may have. The black scalene triangle towards the centre is ‘negative space’ which represents many things that can go wrong in the world of architecture. The crocked shapes interlock with each other showing a sense of harmony however this is in conflict with that fact that colours are strikingly different from one another. The green tones in between the shapes signifies grass, greenery and earth which in many ways is the foundation of most if not all architectural projects. Furthermore some bit of my final piece were raised and I intended on giving it a three dimensional aspect where if looking from the side it looked like buildings on top of a foundation of grass, however this didn’t work too well because the glue was too thick so this is something that I could improve on. My final piece was based around work that I had already done in my book this made it more personal to me as well as fitting into my theme. The first attempt in creating this artwork was by using modrock and this which wasn’t too successful. Foam board was then suggested to me and it was a very good idea because it’s a material architects are familiar with. It was easy to cut the various shapes out of the form board and create my overall artwork. However when drying the painted foam board the material curled at its ends which I didn’t expect and this made it a struggle to get it stuck down onto the MDF board. In conclusion I think this artwork was a success and I really enjoyed creating it.

I chose wedding for my occasion, and tried to develop it in a new and alternative way. I have uploaded a few of the sketchbook pages to show you how I worked towards my end result.

For our latest project from one of my tutors, Alan, we were given a choice of four different 'Cockney ryhming slang' options. I was given a choice of; Plate of meat~ Feet, Fish Hook~ Book, Elephant trunk~ drunk and Barnet Fair~ Hair...Until now i hadnt even heard of cockney rhyming slang, so this was an interesting project for me! This was the final outcome of 'Plate of meat~ Feet'...I was attempting to piss my teachers off with this, but they were really excited about the idea and told me to do this option...I question my logic!

Title: Rainbows and Bonbons

Size: 750x3000mm

Date completed: 24 September 2008

Description: Final painting submitted for A-level Coursework, with side and closeup view.

Write-up:

Children can simply eat, laugh and play, but I am a child grown old.

Rainbows and Bonbons stems from my personal experience and desire to preserve my childhood fantasy. The viewer is invited to share the special connection of innocence and happiness between the child and candy. Yet, this work goes beyond portraying this childhood happiness. It is laced with deeper nuances of emotion associated not just with nostalgia, but with regret. While one can celebrate in the recollection of this simple joy, most will realize that this joy lies only in our memories.
