These 2 old boys were out before dawn in the middle of winter, swimming around in the surf. I'd say crazy, but that's just me....
Another shot from 1986, this time we see 50032 'Courageous' passing Hayes & Harlington with a Paddington-Oxford Service.
It's hard to believe, but a few of our aloe plants put up flower stalks in December. I don't know what they are thinking because we have had some freezing mornings. I hope they survive: it is nice to see the color in the drab winter landscape.
We'd end each day the same way - all of us watching some tv show or another, Mom on the big couch, we three sort of squished together on the love seat. She'd barely make it to the first commercial break before she was asleep.
We complained about it then - that she should just go up to her room and to bed - leave us with both couches, and not having to whisper so we wouldn't wake her. It wasn't fair - selfish, even. Why did she always get the big couch? That memory became one of those things from childhood my brother, sister, and I remembered and laughed about - and for years, it still held this subtle edge of judgement.
And then there was the day my Mom shared with me what it was really like for her to be a single mom.
She told me how it was to be young, and scared - mostly all of the time. She worried that although my Dad was wonderful - a very active parent, supportive financially - that if anything ever happened to him, she wouldn't be able to support us on her own. It kept her up at night. She took out loans and put herself back in school. She became a nurse - because nurses always had a job. Then she put herself through grad school so she could take on more responsibility, with more job security. I just thought she wanted it. She worked full time, carried a full load in school, and made dinner every night. She was at every school play, soccer game, band concert, tennis match, etc., etc. I suppose I knew at least some of it, but like I know the ground is under me - I never really thought about it - not like that.
And then - then, she told me about the couch.
She said every night she sat down intending to spend time with us. We were the most important thing in her life - she just wanted to be with us. She wanted to laugh with us, and she wanted to watch Little House on the Prairie with us. She knew we grumbled about it, and promised herself over and over she'd stay awake. But, every night, she fell asleep. She was just too exhausted. She cried when she told me. So did I.
There are a lot of ways I probably could depict my Mom as a young woman - but this - this is my Mom. My beautiful, courageous, selfless, Mom.

Being told you have a visual impairment that can't be treated can be difficult to come to terms with.
Some people go through a process similar to bereavement, where they experience a range of emotions including shock, anger, and denial, before eventually coming to accept their condition.

Fishing vessels Courageous and Titan Explorer. The Courageous was built in 1943 as a Coast Guard cutter and has undergone various name changes since then. I always thought there was something retro about her look but did not think she was that old. 50 032 Courageous is just coming to the end of the reinforced rail section of the Cornish mainline at Coombe. As can be seen from the speed limit signs, the area was subject to severe restrictions. As well as the reinforced track to combat mining subsidence, there are sharp curves to contend with too. Note the line in the background. Since this section was redoubled in the 2000s I don't know if the speed restrictions were retained

Memories of the fine art of Vac bashing
Between 1983 and 1991 I spent many, many happy hours with my friends riding the rails behind the mighty 'Hoovers' or Class 50s. As well as enjoying the thrash, I managed to record many of the trips and railway scenes encountered on film for posterity. Those days are now long gone, but happily the photos remain for me to reminisce over and share ;)
Here is one of a set of photos I took on one of my last visits to Old Oak Common in 1990 - with Class 50 50032 'Courageous' in reflective mood after a 22 career on British Rail.
50032 always stood out from the crowd in NSE livery because of the unique blue nameplate. The loco was a particular favourite of mine, and I was disappointed that she escaped preservation.
Something new for 2023...Sound & Vision on SoundCloud - more memories from a mis-spent youth 😎 During the 1980s, I spent a lot of my time riding around the British Rail network, mainly chasing Class 40s and then Class 50s, but also seeing and riding behind a number of other classes. I made a number of tape recordings at the time - many from the front window, some from the platform - using my trusty 'ghetto-blaster' or 'boom box' - and now these recordings can finally be heard :)
Join me at the front window for two recordings of Class 50 50032 'Courageous' on 1B56 18.07 Paddington - Hereford. Firstly, we leave London Paddington and then travel the five miles or so to Ealing Broadway, where the train is slowed by a p.w. restriction, and then accelerates off again. I even managed to capture the ticket check :) Then, for the second recording, we leave Oxford and take the cross-country route to Worcester & Hereford. Apologies for the wind buffeting noise but that's what it was like hanging out of the front window back in the day 😎 - recorded on 8th August 1986.

Locomotive History
D432 entered service 13-Jul-68
Renumbered 50032 in 1974
Named 'Courageous' 17-Jul-78
Withdrawn 15-Oct-90
After surviving in service until October 1990, the locomotive was stripped of useful parts at Old Oak Common and then cut up on site by Coopers Metals, along with my least favourite machine 50034 'Furious'. 50032 never carried the later version of NSE livery.

Mrs P and myself recently visited the RNLI college in Poole, Dorset, a very impressive state of the art facility, something I have wanted to do for some time.
We booked ‘The Discovery Tour’ details of which can be found on the internet.
We can highly recommend this tour to people from all walks of life.
There were many reasons for wanting to do this tour, living by the coast all our lives and our fascination of the sea being one. Also there are three lifeboat stations a short distance from home which we look in on a regular basis, one of these being a station with an all weather boat.
Sadly but not least a Father and Son, both friends of ours ended up in the sea locally following a freak accident many years ago. Arriving on scene The RNLI were faced with a 3 meter breaking sea, plus waves rebounding off the cliff face. Following an extremely dangerous manoeuvre the boats helm took the boat in stern first, close into the cliffs under extreme conditions.
Locating the one casualty whose condition was deteriorating rapidly, the crew got him on board got away from the cliff where he was transferred to a helicopter and taken to hospital which saved his life.
Sadly his father had died in the accident, but once again the crew in the most challenging of circumstances returned to the scene, carried out an incredible manoeuvre in order to recover the Fathers body so the family could lay him to rest.
Following this outstanding rescue all three crew members were awarded gallantry medals by the RNLI, with the helm awarded the Silver medal.
I have the greatest admiration and respect for the crews as in the main they are all non paid volunteers who go out in all manner of weather conditions to save the lives of others.
Some stations which have an all weather boat do have one crew member mainly a mechanic on station who does get paid. But these stations are in the minority.
On the way home from Poole, we decided to drop in on Kimmeridge Bay, a location I have wanted to visit and photograph. Conditions were not ideal, but what is it they say, ‘you have to photograph what is in front of you’.
A word of caution to anyone visiting here. An old trick of mine over the years even before I got a camera is to get a nearby stone and skim it across any rocks. If the stone takes off like a long dog you know the rocks are very slippery.
When I threw a stone across these lovely inviting rocks, the stone took off like a bullet. So though they did not look it at first glance these are very slippery indeed, so please take care.
Thank you for viewing my photos, the comments and banter are so appreciated.

A Dolphin dream of mind control......
.......The White Elephant in the room looked on patiently at the 800 pound gorilla laying on the creaking couch, encouraging her to continue with his kind silence….. She resumed speaking in confessional tones: …..don’t you sometimes marvel at how perversely bizarre the simple” truth” can sometimes sound? ……So strange we go around denying what’s happening rather than run the risk of sounding crazy.
The unconditional positive regard emanating from the elephant across the room was having an effect …..
......As an example, even as a senior Congresswoman, when bringing up the topic of the "silent government coup" amongst colleages, I feel like I’m walking on eggshells . You know; it’s something that usually happens in a third world country….but never us….. To even speculate on this possibility feels too frighteningly unthinkable….except in the realm of literary fantasies.
Go on, said the gentle pachyderm…..
The gorilla exhaled and continued….You see, ....even now, just talking about it, I find myself struggling to avoid words of off-the-wall sounding conspiracy theorists. ….let’s face it, .....we have enough problems without sounding like paranoid loonies….and become the butt of ridicule on Fox TV.....even though some privately admit to being plagued by the very same unspeakable thoughts...
The gently nodding head and swaying trunk were strangely relaxing…..
Stretched out langerously on the straining furniture, the humongous gorilla absently flicked dander from her chest as she continued to speculate in hushed tones:
…..When one thinks about this, the whole self-censoring dynamic sounds like a counter-phobic reaction. It shuts down all questioning or critical thinking about the very idea of a silent coup…..How pervasively fool-proof is that, eh?
The White Elephant nodded its head pensively, adding…..Humm, maybe the notion IS so unthinkable that the very idea eludes us.....even as it actually unfolds in plain sight…….After it’s happened, we may not even notice…..
She preened herself nervously while sinking still deeper into the straining couch. She stared impassively into the darkness and in a far off, hesitating voice volunteered…....I don’t know that this is related…..but, of all things, I just remembered a dream I had……of a baby dolphin who spoke to me of a life altering experience she'd once gone through.
.....She talked about a defining moment that came to pass in the midst of Hurricane Katrina. . During the storm surge and flooding that followed, she came to realize that the water filled spaces where she’d always experienced her being were in fact unnatural.
As the storm swept her further away from home, she took note that her childhood sanctuary had actually been cleverly compartmentalized, heated, cooled and articulated.....it had controlled and colored every facet of her existence.
With this knowledge, she would never see the world in the same way. She spoke of experiencing an exhilarating sense of freedom that was, at first, quite disorienting…..
As we swam and frolicked in the warm Gulf and Caribbean Sea waters, she marveled at the blinding array of choices and possible futures before her….. We drifted in the midst of a calm sun dappled ocean that went on forever…..
We floated lazily on our backs facing a brilliant sky and talked about everything under the sun. I remember dozing off during a long pause…..then awakening to the sound of her child-like whisperings as she confided thoughts and longings intruding on her new life of freedom….. They seemed to flood her with nostalgic memories of a simpler time in a place called Lake Pontchartrain..…on a US naval base she’d called home…..
After a waiting for her next words for some time, Ganesha, the towering white elephant cleared it's throat and, said the expected thing in moments like this... Now what do you suppose that’s all about Madam Speaker?….
To be continued…..stay tuned….
By the way, any resemblance between this charcter and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi may, or may not, be purely coincidental.
If you found this entertaining and all you’re getting is a fanciful fable......watch this:video:

'Courageous' approaches journey's end with a decent 9 coach load in tow. The view from the flats was still pretty clear back in the late 80s but the trees at left would soon explode in height and bulk. The erection of 25kV electrification would completely wreck the view anyway!
Laira depot's work-worn "Hoover" Class 50 No.50032 'Courageous', then a regular visitor to Gloucester, between passenger duties on Gloucester's Horton Road depot on 19th August 1979, waiting for a balanced diagram returning it to its home county. In just over one year from this time, in November 1980, it would be released from Doncaster works after its full refurbishment, resplendent in the BR large logo livery. 50032 emerged from the Vulcan works as D432 in July 1968, and was withdrawn from Laira Depot in October 1990, ten years after its full refurbishment and in Network South East colours, finally being disposed of by Coopers Metals at Old Oak Common depot during February 1991.
