The leaders of Ireland’s main Churches have released a report on the dialogue that they engaged in following their initial meetings with Northern Ireland’s five party leaders, entitled A time for courageous and compassionate leadership: Report on the Church Leaders’ Civil Society Dialogue Initiative.

The senior churchmen presented the report and its main findings to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the Rt Hon Karen Bradley MP, An Tánaiste Simon Coveney TD, and the party leaders attending the inter–party talks on Tuesday 14 May.

The initiative began in September 2018 when the Church Leaders invited the leaders of Northern Ireland’s main political parties to discuss the consequences of the political impasse. This was then followed by separate meetings in October between the Church Leaders, Secretary of State and Tánaiste.

Those involved in each of the autumn meetings agreed that it would be helpful if the Church Leaders’ dialogue between them could be opened up to the party’s locally–based MLAs along with some from wider Northern Ireland society.

Between December 2018 and February 2019, approximately 120 people attended facilitated discussions in Newry, Belfast, Ballymena and Derry–Londonderry. This included locally–based representatives from health and social care, policing, business, farming and agriculture, youth work, family support, women’s groups, those engaged in anti–poverty work and community development. Like many other similar gatherings, these meetings focused on the consequences of the political impasse and ways in which political leaders and civil society could work together for the common good. Two Church Leaders attended each regional meeting along with local church representatives and locally–based MLAs.

Releasing the report, the Rev Trevor Gribben, Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church and Secretary to the Church Leaders’ Group (Ireland), said: “The Church Leaders welcomed the opportunity last week to meet with the Secretary of State, An Tánaiste and the party leaders during the inter–party talks last week. The Church Leaders wanted to encourage those involved in this fresh initiative, which they hope will lead to substantive progress over the next number of weeks. During the meeting they also shared with them the report’s key findings.

“In the report the Church Leaders say, ‘There is great value in people from different backgrounds, and different sectors, coming together to support each other recognising our collective responsibility for the common good. We have heard a strong message coming from our local communities that this is the kind of leadership people want, and need, to see at the present time.’”

“Acknowledging that the timing for the talks was not perfect, the Church Leaders said that they were aware of a growing sense of despair in communities at the lack of political movement on restoring devolution. Together, they hoped that this fresh initiative would lead to substantive progress and the establishment of a sustainable power–sharing executive that is built on balanced accommodation and focused on the common good. They added that this would require leadership that is courageous and compassionate.

“Having discussed the report with the inter–party talks participants and referenced the initiative in their various public statements following their meeting, the Church Leaders felt that it would be helpful if the report was shared more widely.”

The Church Leaders involved in the initiative, and who met with participants in the inter–party talks were:

- The Most Rev Dr Richard Clarke, Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland;

- The Most Rev Eamon Martin, Catholic Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland;

- The Right Rev Dr Charles McMullen, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland;

- The Rev William Davison, President of the Methodist Church in Ireland;

- The Rev Brian Anderson, President of the Irish Council of Churches; and

- The Rev Trevor Gribben, Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church and Joint Secretary to the Church Leaders’ Group (Ireland).

The comic story is an expression of characters heroic personal revolt against austerity and urban imprisonment, it echoes the story of Alexander the Great who is also seen as a Don Quixote. Escaping capitalist mono rationalism Alexander discovers nature is still there alive and full of wonder!

Confronting Darius the local Scrapyard King of Ireland he abducts his daughter a young traveller woman to be his bride Roxanne! Together on the road they joust with the pursuing police and farmers tractors (Quixote's windmills) and Alexander even promises to lead all the animals in a grand revolt!

Until suddenly time and space fall away and the Poet of our Cosmos, interested, arrives to talk with them….

Alexander's search for something lost now ends up on life's cliff and limit where his escape can go no further. But as our hero's mask falls away and now completely naked he discovers he is loved by Roxanne, at last they make love and riding together upon Alexander's loyal bicycle stead Buce Phalus, returning them back to the city to bring their discoveries of love, empathy and a revolution in human values home!

Courageous Act of Cyrus Tiffany in Battle of Lake Erie, Sept 13, 1813" by Martyl Schweig

Cyrus Tiffany in the Battle of Lake Erie (1813), saving the life of Commodore Perry

Cyrus Tiffany may be the best known black seaman from the Lake Erie fleet because of his close personal association with Perry. Tiffany, variously recorded as a seaman and a musician, also served with Perry at Newport. Perry apparently took a personal interest in Tiffany's well being. According to one account:

When the engagement approached, the Commodore, in as far as he could to put [Tiffany] out of harms way, placed him on the berth deck [of the Lawrence] with a musket & bayonet, with orders to charge upon any one attempting to skulk below. Shortly after the battle began the men fell so thick & fast that the Commodore observed the hatchway crowded with wounded, where passage below seemed to be obstructed. On going there he found them charged upon by 'old Tiffany,' who swore they were a set of skulkers, and should not come below....In the [U.S. Frigate] Java he sometimes took great liberties, which the Commodore bore in the greatest good humor, & was much incensed on one occasion when a Lieutenant had punished him with a ropes end [a thickly knotted rope's end, called a starter, was used by boatswain's mates to galvanize shirkers]. He was a 'hanger on' to the Commodore to the day of his death, who always took the most humane care of him.

On October 2nd, 2018, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) recognized the off-duty actions of Engineer Danny Lynch who selflessly saved multiple homes in his neighborhood during the raging Thomas Fire in Ventura County. Also present for the recognition was Captain Dennis Cameron of the Torrance Fire Department, who was on a Thomas Fire Strike Team that Engineer Lynch teamed up with.

The incident took place Dec 3rd and 4th, 2017. Captain Cameron’s Engine company arrived in the city of Ventura around midnight to Engineer Lynch’s neighborhood that already had multiple homes burning and civilians evacuating. Fortunately Danny had his turnouts with him. He approached Captain Cameron on the street, identified himself as an off-duty LAFD firefighter, and asked if he could help. Several houses were burning on both sides of the street and resources were spread very thin, so Captain Cameron gave Mr. Lynch some quick direction. Danny then took off with a hoseline to a house that was just starting to light off and swiftly went to work. He came back a few minutes later saying flames were in the attic and wanted a pike pole, then took off again. A few minutes later he returned again asking for a chainsaw and ladder. This time Captain Cameron went with Engineer Lynch to check on his progress.

At this point he had already pulled ceiling and knocked down the bulk of the fire from inside the house, but recognized that the roof needed to be opened up to fully extinguish the fire and save the house. Both members went to the roof, Danny cut several holes and then brought the hoseline to the roof to complete extinguishment. Engineer Lynch spent almost an hour by himself making sure this house didn’t burn down. His actions continued...

At this point he pulled his hoseline down the street to assist Firefighters battling other burning homes, and continued to work with the Strike Team through the night until the water supply was lost and all companies had to retreat.

It is important to mention that the Thomas Fire was the largest wildfire the State of California had ever seen at that point, and approximately 240 homes were threatened in Danny's neighborhood alone. Fire resources were stretched to their max, therefore Danny was required to at times to act alone, however he made calculated operational decisions based upon safety and situational awareness, while wearing full personal protective equipment, and maintaining close communication with the Strike Team Captain.

Due to his courageous actions, Engineer Lynch was responsible for saving several homes, and is worthy of formal recognition.
