I took these picture for the two in the front but didn't realize till later there were other "interesting" things going on in the picture.
The 'oonjal' (swing) ceremony is possibly a throwback from the days of child marriages, where children were pacified and rocked to sleep after the ceremony on the large traditional teak swings that were common in the verandahs of houses. The swing ceremony actually symbolizes the ups and downs that every couple has to negotiate in their life together; however they are not alone, and their elders, families, friends are around to help them through this. Here, some friends of the two families sing traditional swing ceremony songs in Tamil. It was actually quite lovely and touching....
A young man and his wife, most likely the predominant mother and father from the Wey collection, around the turn of the 20th century. This may be the oldest image in the collection. From a lost collection of photos found by Chris Terry at the Aberfoyle Antique Market near Guelph, Ontario, Canada in 2001. This box of glass positive emulsions portrays a family history through the first half of the 20th century.
