The other problem with the kitchen was the lack of counterspace near the stove... so, it's remodel time!
Our lame excuse for a pantry. I'm working under extreme conditions here, especially given that said "pantry" is filled mostly with toddler snacks for the picky sous-chef. Because our kitchen is not equipped with a pantry, I bought these wheeled carts at The Container Store and slid them under our kitchen desk (which is used more as a catch-all counterspace than a desk). It's not perfect, but it works.
We envision our kitchen layout to be kind of like this. WALL: fridge on right (right-opening), dual ovens on left, and stove top in between, but with more counterspace; we also like open shelving on top; ISLAND: freezer, D/W, sink, and garbage incorporated
Fridge normally goes against the unseen wall to the right. Slightly less than 5 feet between indented wall and counterspace.
This room is 8'x8' with nothing in it. Add a bed and counterspace/sink/fridge/dresser (located on the other side of the door) you have about 2.5'x5' of open floor space.
at the far left is our dining room table. it comfortably seats 6. on either side of the sink, we have about 5 sq. ft. of counterspace.
This is all the counterspace we get! Here is the kitchen area, the open space on the left is where the fridge and stove would go. Countertop is new... sink is not so new... but everything is clean and newly painted.
Well... half the kitchen really... this side has counterspace and the fridge and oh yes... cupboards
