A Personal Photo Essay: Earlier this year my brother-in-law died unexpectedly. Weeks later my mother passed away - equally unexpectedly. 2017 has been defined by grief - the loss, the anger, the confusion, the isolation - often a full gamut of emotion. These photos attempt to capture those quiet moments when one is left with nothing but their own thoughts. Being a visual creative, I find that I cope and express best with imagery. I present, On Grief.

Bob helps Noel pat down a few cracks that were appearing in the sand, or possibly just likes to get close to Noels manly chest. Either way, I wouldn't blame him. I know I do.

The Bushveld isn't a particularly welcoming place. The soils are thin, infertile and dry. There is water in the rivers running down from the highveld. But it's not much and it's loaded with the parasite Schistosoma, the agent causing Schistosomiasis or Bilharzia. It gets hot, really hot. The Spring sunshine on dark rocks was hot enough to melt the glue in my Italian walking shoes. Plants like this Euphorbia are adapted to the poor soils, low rainfall and high temperatures. How the people cope is enigmatic.

This region was part of the inhumane Apartheid homelands policy. The homelands were given a strange name, a portmaneau word made up of Bantu, people in the Bantu language and -stan from Persian. These were the Bantustans. Dislocated peoples were "settled" here in seemingly worthless land to which they had no ancestral affiliations, no attachments and with few skills or aptitudes suited to this hard, harsh place.

Here, post-Apartheid, not much has changed. That is except that mining has taken off and with it some modern amenities like water supply, electricity, telecommunications and schooling. The water supply probably won't come to your house. But there'll be a standpipe somewhere delivering clean water for you to collect. There may be electrity unless you live in one of the corrugated iron shanties that spring up near the mines or can't afford the pre-paid subscription. Telecommunication standards are good. It's all mobile phones and satellite dishes. Every little hamlet has a kiosk to charge your phone or buy credit. The satellite dishes, I suppose, depend on that electricity you may or may not be able to afford. And around your little mud hut you'll need razor wire. You mightn't have much but by the appearance of all that razor wire someone else might want it too.

1. I wonder how people cope with marriage, children, and their lives, basically. I just know that now, there are a lot of things that are not for me. Even tho, God desires for marriage between men and women, and being fruitful and multiply...Is just not for me, and God definitely knows my thoughts. I just ended class with my new student/ schoolmate. I need some alone time.

2. I am really tired that I have to meet a lot of people's expectations...I suddenly don't know what kind of expectations I have for myself. I need to set boundaries for the sake of my tired mind and my body.

How I wish I am up the mountains now, and I don't wish to come down for 1 year.

“This is one of our nurses, a breast cancer survivor who is still on leave, waiting for replacement, like, for surgery, and still coming in, checking up on us. Her mother and sister also work here. It affects the staff greatly when we have issues, and we’ve had lots of them this year.” (Leslie, preceptor)
