This book investigates the coping mechanisms for communities under conflict, war or siege and how these mechanisms affect the urban form in the area of Jerusalem, Palestine. The aim of this study is to document how the Palestinian communities living there manage their daily lives with the existence of checkpoints and the recently built Israeli Segregation Wall. Specifically, the book looks at how the urban functions (and spaces) serve to fulfill the basic needs of the Palestinian communities and the types of informal adaptive strategies used to survive the restrictive and discriminatory policies of the formal Israeli system. The investigation is based on an attempt to answer the following questions: What were the daily living activities before and after the introduction of the checkpoints and the Wall into the Palestinian urban fabric? Where is the location of the temporary urban functions? How do these functions clash with the existing land use typologies? And finally, what forms do these adaptive mechanisms and temporary urban functions take?

A coping blue-black brick on the rear wall of Newport Station. This is the second date stamped Hamblet I have seen (Newbridge Station, 1900).
The Hamblet works in West Bromwich, was founded in 1851 when Joseph Hamblet acquired part of the Piercy estate at Ireland Green, becoming the largest brickworks in this area of West Bromwich. The firm specialised in blue bricks, but produced many other types as well. In 1898, four years after Hamblet's death, it became Hamblet's Blue Brick Co Ltd. The firm closed down in 1915 and the estate was sold off in 1919.
I came up with the idea for this shot after discovering the word NOETIC. Noetic refers to the intellectual impact of sin and stems from the Greek word 'nous" for mind.

For my doctoral research hoping and coping I am exploring if and how art therapy can help in bolstering resilience in times of crisis, using my Art Refuge practice work as case material. Since the Covid-19 pandemic and building on the charity’s work with refugees in northern France in which social media can be a lifeline, Coronaquilt was launched in mid-March as a virtual community project. Art Refuge invited people across the world to contribute to a patchwork quilt via Instagram. Taking the form of drawing, photography, craft or textiles on the theme of daily rituals, the project has had a huge response with 1,162 contributions (13.11.20) from over 25 countries. A number of contributors, including refugees, have fed back that the physical act of sewing and making was helping them feel more grounded and absorbed in the here and now. Feedback so far is that Coronaquilt has provided distraction from fear, anxiety, grief, loss and loneliness – emotions associated with the coronavirus – helping some people hope, cope and manage better with the pandemic.
